To sit for the Idaho bar exam, you need a Juris Doctor from an approved law school, good moral character, and a completed application filed by the posted deadline, and to be admitted you must then pass the exam itself along with the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination. The Idaho bar exam requirements are set by Idaho Bar Commission Rule 202 and the related admissions rules, and they are in a transition year: February 2026 is the last Uniform Bar Examination sitting in Idaho, and the July 2026 sitting is the first administration of the NextGen bar exam.1Idaho State Bar. Who Qualifies to Sit for the Exam
Rule 202 lists five baseline qualifications. You must be at least 18, lawfully admitted to the United States, and a person of good moral character. You need a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an approved law school, and you must satisfy the essential eligibility requirements described in the admissions rules.2Idaho State Bar. Idaho Bar Commission Rules “Approved Law School” in practice means an American Bar Association–accredited school or one meeting equivalent standards recognized by the Idaho Bar Commission.
Attorneys licensed elsewhere have separate paths into Idaho practice, but no route skips the character and fitness review.
The Exam You’ll Take Depends on When You Sit
Idaho offers the exam twice a year, on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. Which exam you take depends on your sitting.
February 2026: The Final UBE
The Uniform Bar Examination has three parts. The Multistate Bar Examination is a 200-question multiple-choice test covering civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property, and torts; 25 of those questions are unscored. The Multistate Essay Examination tests written legal analysis, and the Multistate Performance Test asks you to complete a practical drafting task from a provided case file.
July 2026 Forward: The NextGen Bar Exam
Starting in July 2026, Idaho administers the NextGen bar exam developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. NextGen combines multiple-choice questions, integrated question sets, and performance tasks, and the NCBE describes it as testing “foundational lawyering skills” using “fundamental legal concepts and principles needed in today’s practice of law.”3National Conference of Bar Examiners. NextGen Bar Exam Scores are reported on a 500 to 750 scale. The Idaho State Bar has cautioned that dates, deadlines, procedures, and grading for July 2026 may still change as implementation details are finalized, so check the Bar’s website for updates if you’re sitting that cycle.1Idaho State Bar. Passing Scores
Idaho lowered its UBE passing score from 270 to 266 effective with the February 2026 exam. The Idaho Supreme Court issued that order so the final UBE sitting aligned with the equivalent standard recommended for the July 2026 NextGen exam.4Idaho State Bar. In Re Passing Score for the February 2026 Idaho Bar Examination Order Before that change, Idaho was one of only three UBE jurisdictions with a passing score above 270.5Idaho State Bar. Because the NextGen exam uses the 500 to 750 scale, the 266 figure doesn’t carry over directly. As of early 2026, Idaho has not published a specific NextGen passing score.
The MPRE
Separate from the bar exam, you must score at least 85 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, which covers legal ethics and professional conduct.6Idaho State Bar. UBE Score Transfer The MPRE is offered in March, August, and November and can be taken before or after the bar exam. Idaho imposes a time limit on how long an MPRE score remains valid, so plan to take it reasonably close to your bar sitting rather than years in advance.
Deadlines and Fees
Miss the filing deadline and you either pay a late fee or lose the sitting entirely.
- February exam: Timely filing deadline is October 1 of the prior year. Late applications are accepted through November 15 with a $200 late fee.
- July exam: Timely filing deadline is March 1. Late applications are accepted through April 15 with the same $200 late fee.
Application fees depend on your status. Law students pay $600; licensed attorneys applying for examination pay $800.1Idaho State Bar. Testing Accommodations
Applicants who need accommodations under the ADA should consult Idaho Bar Commission Rule 214 and contact the admissions office early. Lactation-related accommodation requests must be received at least four weeks before the first day of the exam except in extraordinary circumstances.8Idaho State Bar. Reasonable Testing Accommodations For other accommodations, build in as much lead time as you can; documentation reviews take time.
Character and Fitness: What the Application Really Asks
Idaho’s admissions application goes well beyond basic biographical data. The character and fitness review is thorough, and incomplete or inaccurate submissions are the most common reason applications stall.
You must document every residence and employer for a substantial period, typically the last ten years. The application also requires five general references, at least three of whom have known you for a minimum of five years. References are handled through the online portal: you enter their email addresses and the system sends them a reference form link. Follow up with your references yourself, because the Idaho State Bar holds you responsible for making sure completed forms arrive on time.9Idaho State Bar. Omitting something that later surfaces is worse than disclosing an old debt or a minor incident.
If You Don’t Pass, and Other Ways In
Idaho allows up to six attempts. After a sixth failure, you can only sit again if you demonstrate a substantial change in your legal knowledge that makes it probable you will pass. For context, Idaho’s overall pass rate for the July 2025 exam was 81%.11National Conference of Bar Examiners. UBE Score Transfer
If you earned a qualifying UBE score in another jurisdiction, you can transfer it to Idaho without retaking the exam. The score must be at least 266 and must have been earned within 37 months of the Idaho exam date you’re applying for.13National Conference of Bar Examiners. UBE Maximum Score Age You still need to pass the MPRE and clear character and fitness. How score transfers will work once Idaho moves to NextGen in July 2026 has not been fully clarified, so contact the Idaho State Bar directly if you’re planning a transfer after that transition.
Experienced Attorney Admission
Attorneys with significant practice experience can apply for admission without sitting for the exam under Rule 206. You must have actively practiced law for at least three of the five years immediately before your application, either in Idaho under a limited license or similar arrangement or in a jurisdiction that offers reciprocal admission to Idaho-licensed attorneys.2Idaho State Bar. Idaho Bar Commission Rules The application fee is $1,200, and the Idaho State Bar estimates the process takes 60 to 90 days.14Idaho State Bar. Admission for Experienced Attorneys
After You Pass
Passing the exam doesn’t make you a lawyer yet. You have to complete your licensing paperwork, pay a $200 prorated license fee, and attend the admissions ceremony. For the February 2026 cycle, the ceremony is May 1, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Auditorium at the Idaho State Capitol in Boise, with licensing forms and fees due by April 27, 2026. Bring $25 in cash, check, or money order at the ceremony for the Idaho Supreme Court’s formal admission certificate; the Court does not accept credit cards and cannot make change. Admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho is a separate application with a $250 fee. If you can’t attend the ceremony, contact the Idaho Supreme Court Clerk’s Office to schedule a private swearing-in.15Idaho State Bar. Admissions Ceremony Information
New-Admittee CLE
Once you’re sworn in, the clock starts on continuing legal education. New Idaho attorneys must complete 10 credits of New Admittee Credit-approved CLE within 12 months of admission. Four of those credits must come from specific Idaho Substantive Law Courses covering ethics, civil procedure, criminal procedure, and community property. If you have not practiced law for at least three years before admission, you must also complete the New Attorney Program, which counts toward the 10-credit total.16Idaho State Bar. New Admittee CLE Requirements The deadline is enforced; missing it can result in cancellation of your license. Hardship extensions are available under Rule 402(f)(4) if circumstances warrant.
