Idaho’s online DMV services live at dmvonline.itd.idaho.gov, where you can renew a standard driver’s license for as little as $30, renew vehicle registration, order personalized or specialty plates, request a driving record, and file a release of liability after selling a car.1Idaho Transportation Department. What You Can Do Online
Renew a Driver’s License or ID Card
If you’re eligible, you can renew a standard Class D driver’s license or ID card from home. Idaho offers four-year and eight-year renewal terms, and drivers between 21 and 62 can choose the eight-year option.2Idaho Transportation Department. You can also check your driver status without logging in.
Renew Vehicle Registration
Registration renewal is the most-used online transaction and covers passenger cars, motorcycles, and trailers. Updated decals are mailed to the address on file.3Idaho Transportation Department. Order Plates and File a Release of Liability
The portal handles personalized and specialty plate orders and lets you check whether a personalized plate text is available. It also accepts the release of liability form you’re required to file after selling a vehicle. Idaho law requires this filing within five days of delivering the car to the buyer, and it protects you from responsibility for accidents, traffic violations, and towing or storage charges that occur after the sale.5Idaho State Legislature. Request a Driving Record
Official Idaho driving records are ordered through a separate Access Idaho portal. A record costs $7, or $21 for a certified copy. Insurance companies typically request a three-year record; employers verifying commercial credentials need a complete record.6Idaho Transportation Department. Idaho Driver’s License Record Request
Star Card (REAL ID) Online
Idaho’s REAL ID-compliant license, called a Star Card, has a star in the upper right corner. A first-time Star Card always requires an in-person visit so the DMV can verify original identity documents. If you already have one and you’re a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, you may be eligible to renew it online. If you’re not a U.S. citizen, Star Card renewal has to be done in person so you can present updated proof of lawful presence.7Idaho Transportation Department. Star Card
A standard Idaho license without the star still works for driving and state identification. Since May 7, 2025, though, you need a REAL ID or another acceptable ID (such as a passport) to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
What You Need Before You Start
For a DMV Online Account, you’ll be prompted to link an email and set a password on first login. Once the account is set up, the system pulls your driver and vehicle records automatically, so you don’t have to re-enter license numbers or VINs each time.1Idaho Transportation Department. For a no-login registration renewal, have three things ready: your plate number, the vehicle’s VIN, and a credit or debit card with its billing address.3Idaho Transportation Department. Vehicle Registrations The VIN appears on the title and on a metal plate visible through the driver’s side of the windshield. Sessions can time out, so pull the numbers before you sit down.
All online transactions go through Access Idaho, which adds a 3% processing fee on top of the state fee. That charge funds the online platform rather than coming out of tax revenue.1Idaho Transportation Department. Idaho DMV Online Credit and debit cards are accepted.
Common Fees
- Class D license, four-year renewal (age 21+): $35, reduced to $30 online
- Class D license, eight-year renewal (ages 21–62): $60, reduced to $55 online
- Duplicate driver’s license: $20
- Personalized plates: $25 to issue, then $15 per year at renewal
- Specialty plates: $35 to issue, then $25 per year at renewal
- Driving record: $7, or $21 certified
The $5 online discount applies only to driver’s license renewals, not to ID cards or other transactions.2Idaho Transportation Department. After You Submit
You’ll get an email confirmation that acts as your receipt. For a registration renewal, the portal generates a printable confirmation you can keep in the vehicle while the new decal is in the mail.
Delivery times vary by document. Plastic driver’s licenses are produced at a central facility and typically arrive within about ten business days.9Idaho Transportation Department. ITD Introduces Central Issue Driver’s Licenses The card ships in an unmarked envelope similar to the way banks send credit cards, so watch the mail carefully.10Bonneville County Sheriff. Drivers License Registration stickers usually arrive faster. If nothing has shown up within three weeks, contact the Idaho Transportation Department to check status.
If Your Registration Has Already Lapsed
You can still renew a lapsed registration online. Idaho’s administrative rules charge the standard fee for the full renewal period regardless of when during that period you renew. If the registration has been expired for more than a year, you aren’t charged retroactively for the gap; you pay for the current renewal period going forward.11Idaho Division of Financial Management. What the Portal Can’t Do
Some transactions still require a county office visit:
- First-time Star Card, because original identity documents have to be verified in person
- Star Card renewal for non-U.S. citizens, because updated proof of lawful presence must be presented in person7Idaho Transportation Department. Star Card
- Vehicle title transfers, handled at the county assessor’s office
- First-time driver’s licenses, which require identity verification, a photo, and testing
- Commercial driver’s licenses, where federal medical certification and endorsement rules generally rule out standard online renewal
