The Idaho vehicle lien release form, officially called ITD 3777 (Release and Satisfaction of Interest), is the document a lender signs to tell the Idaho Transportation Department that your loan is paid off and the lien should come off your title. The lienholder fills it out, not you. Once ITD processes the signed form and the title fee, the department issues a new certificate of title with the lender’s name removed.
When You Actually Need the Paper Form
Idaho law gives a lienholder 30 days from payoff to notify ITD and deliver the paper title to the owner.1Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 49-511 – Cancellation or Discharge of Lien or Encumbrance There is more than one way to do that, and the paper ITD 3777 isn’t always necessary.
If your lender participates in Idaho’s Electronic Lien and Title (ELT) program, the release happens digitally. The lender sends an electronic transaction to ITD, which prints a clean paper title and mails it to you, typically the next business day after the electronic release is received.2Idaho Transportation Department. Electronic Liens and Titles (ELT) Fact Sheet Most large national banks and credit unions use ELT, so if that describes your lender, a clean title may already be on its way without anyone filling out a form.
ITD 3777 is the fallback. You need it when the lender held the paper title and it has been lost or damaged, when the lender is a smaller institution or private party not on ELT, or when a lien was recorded years ago and the paperwork trail is cold. The form also covers vessels with a hull identification number, not just cars and trucks.
What the Lienholder Fills In
ITD 3777 is a single page with two sections, and legibility matters. County clerks review these before forwarding them to ITD, and anything they can’t read gets sent back.3Idaho Transportation Department. Release and Satisfaction Of Interest
Vehicle or Vessel Details
The top section ties the release to a specific vehicle. It needs the 17-character VIN (or HIN for a vessel), the Idaho title number, the year, make, and model, and the owner of record’s name. Everything has to match ITD’s existing title record exactly. A single transposed digit in the VIN will cause a mismatch and a rejection. If you don’t have the paper title in hand, the county assessor’s office can look up the title number.
Lienholder Information and Signature
The bottom section is where the lender formally releases the lien. It calls for:
- The lienholder’s name exactly as it appears on the title. If the lender has changed names through a merger, acquisition, or DBA, the form has a “Known As / DBA / One and the Same As” field for both the recorded name and the current one.
- The lien satisfaction date (the day the loan was fully paid off).
- The lienholder’s printed name, address, and phone number.
- One or two authorized signatures. For a bank or business, that means an officer or agent with signing authority. If someone signs under a power of attorney, the original or a verified copy of the POA must be attached, with a full description of the vehicle and the grantor’s signature.4Idaho Transportation Department. Application for Certificate of Title
- The date of signing.
Print every name exactly as Idaho’s title records show it. Name mismatches are the fastest route to rejection. If you aren’t sure how a name was recorded, ask the county assessor’s motor vehicle office to pull the record before filling anything in.
Where to Submit It and What It Costs
You have two routes:
- In person at a county assessor’s motor vehicle office. A technician can review the form on the spot and flag errors before they trigger a rejection. Not every county office handles vehicle title services, so check the location list at itd.idaho.gov/dmv-locations first.5Idaho Transportation Department. DMV Locations
- By mail to ITD headquarters at PO Box 7129, Boise, ID 83707-1129, with fees by check or money order payable to the Idaho Transportation Department.6Idaho Transportation Department. Vehicle Titles
The statutory fee for a new certificate of title is $14. Rush processing adds $26 on top of that.7Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 49-202 – Duties of Department County offices also charge an administrative fee that varies by county. In Ada County it’s $7, so the standard total runs $21, or $54 with rush. Confirm the total with your county office before you pay. Most offices accept checks, money orders, and credit cards, though options differ by location.
Standard processing generally takes two to four weeks from the date of submission. Once ITD verifies the signatures and matches the form to its records, a new title is issued without the lien.
If the Lender Is Gone or Won’t Respond
The hardest version of this situation is when you’ve paid the loan but the lender has closed, merged, or simply won’t answer. Without a signed ITD 3777 or an electronic release, the lien stays on your title. ITD cannot remove it on your word alone.
For a vehicle less than 10 years old, Idaho offers a bonded title as a workaround. You send certified mail to every owner and lienholder on record notifying them of your intent to title the vehicle, then purchase a surety bond for one and a half times the vehicle’s appraised value and keep the bond in effect for three years.8Idaho Transportation Department. Bonded Title Application Instructions ITD issues a bonded title during that period. If no claim is filed against the bond within three years, you return to any county DMV office, pay the standard title fee, and get a regular title with the bonded brand removed.
For vehicles older than 10 years, the bonded title process does not apply. The path depends on what documentation you can produce and the specific circumstances. Your county assessor’s motor vehicle office can walk you through the options, which may include alternative affidavits or documentation of the lender’s dissolution.
Either way, start by requesting a motor vehicle record from your county office. That record shows exactly who is listed as the lienholder, which tells you who has to sign the release or who you need to notify by certified mail.
Vessels Use the Same Form
ITD 3777 covers vessels alongside motor vehicles. The form has a field for the Hull Identification Number next to the VIN field, and Idaho applies the same titling procedures to boats as it does to cars and trucks.9Idaho Transportation Department. Titling Vessels in Idaho If you’re also titling the vessel in Idaho for the first time, separate requirements apply, including a HIN inspection and, for vessels acquired before January 1, 2000, an indemnifying affidavit on Form ITD-3410. Those are titling requirements, not lien-release requirements, but they often come up together when someone buys a used boat with an outstanding loan.
