An IDFPR license renewal is completed online through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s CORE portal before your license’s expiration date. You confirm your continuing education, update your contact information, answer disclosure questions, attest to tax and child support compliance, and pay a fee that depends on your profession. Miss the window and the cost climbs sharply, and you cannot legally practice while your license is expired.
Know Your Expiration Date
Every Illinois professional license has its own expiration date set by the Illinois Administrative Code under Title 68, and the renewal cycle depends on the profession. Many licenses run on a two-year cycle. Others do not. CPAs renew every three years, with individual licenses expiring September 30 and firm licenses November 30.1Cornell Law Institute. Illinois Administrative Code tit 68 1420.80 – Renewals Licenses under the Clinical Psychologist Licensing Act expire March 31 of odd-numbered years.2Cornell Law Institute. IDFPR sends email reminders when a renewal window opens, using the email address you have on file.3Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Paperless Licensing Frequently Asked Questions If that address is outdated, you will not get the notice, and not knowing your deadline is not a defense. Once your license expires, you cannot legally practice. Penalties vary by act; under the Medical Practice Act, a first-time violation for practicing medicine without a license is a Class 4 felony.4Illinois General Assembly. What to Have Ready Before You Log In
Have these on hand before starting the renewal so you are not scrambling mid-application:
- Your professional license number. If you don’t have it, look it up on IDFPR’s License Lookup tool.
- The renewal PIN from your renewal notification. You’ll enter it during login.5Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Print My License – What Happened
- Your continuing education records. You will attest to completing the required hours for your profession. Certificates usually don’t need to be uploaded, but you must keep them. IDFPR can request them if you renew late, restore an expired license, or are selected for a CE audit.6Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Tax and Child Support Holds
This is where renewals get blocked more often than people expect. Under 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15, IDFPR must deny renewal for anyone who has failed to file a state return, pay tax owed, or pay a final assessment under any tax act administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue. Once Revenue certifies the delinquency to IDFPR, every license you hold is immediately suspended without a hearing, though enforcement is stayed for 60 days so you can request a hearing or resolve the issue.8Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15 – General Powers and Duties
The same statute covers child support. If you are more than 30 days behind on a support order, or a court certifies a violation of the Non-Support Punishment Act lasting more than 60 days, IDFPR will deny or revoke your license without a hearing.8Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15 – General Powers and Duties You can restore the license by establishing a satisfactory repayment record with the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, but the suspension takes effect immediately once the certification hits IDFPR.
Required Training Every Renewal
Sexual Harassment Prevention
All IDFPR-licensed professionals must complete a one-hour continuing education course on sexual harassment prevention each renewal period. The content must comply with the Illinois Human Rights Act and cover what constitutes sexual harassment and how to prevent it. A course from the Illinois Department of Human Rights, or an employer-provided course meeting the Human Rights Act’s minimum standards, satisfies the requirement.
Implicit Bias Awareness for Healthcare Professionals
Healthcare professionals with CE requirements must complete at least one hour of implicit bias awareness training per renewal period. Starting July 1, 2026, healthcare professionals who report to IDFPR that they provide maternal health care services must take an implicit bias course that includes training on maternal health risk factors for marginalized racial and ethnic groups with higher maternal mortality rates.9Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 20 ILCS 2105/2105-15.7 – Implicit Bias Awareness Training Both versions count toward your minimum CE hours rather than adding to them.
Completing the Renewal in CORE
IDFPR handles renewals through its online licensing system, the Comprehensive Online Regulatory Environment (CORE), which is the authorized channel for renewing.10Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation After logging in with your license number and PIN, the system displays your professional information. Review your contact details carefully, because IDFPR uses them for every future notice.
The application asks whether you have had any criminal convictions, pending charges, or discipline from other regulatory boards since your last renewal. A conviction does not automatically bar you from holding a license in Illinois, and you are not required to disclose sealed or expunged convictions. Answer honestly. If a disclosure raises concerns, IDFPR may request more information or issue an Intent to Deny.11Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Professional Licensing in Illinois Providing false information on the application is itself grounds for discipline up to revocation.
Renewal fees vary by profession, and there is no single amount across license types. The fee for your profession appears at the payment step. For reference, an architect renewing on time in the current cycle pays $175. That amount jumps to $300 if renewed after the next renewal period starts, and can reach $425 for licenses expired multiple cycles.12Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Military Service Members and Spouses
Illinois offers a military portability license that lets active-duty service members and their spouses who hold an out-of-state license practice in Illinois after relocating under military orders. The portability license runs from issuance through the next renewal period for that profession, and it is subject to all standard renewal and continuing education requirements.
