The IHSS pay periods and payroll calendar run on a semi-monthly schedule: the first pay period covers the 1st through the 15th of the month, and the second covers the 16th through the last day.1California Department of Social Services. IHSS Provider Resources You submit a separate timesheet for each period, and payment generally arrives within ten business days after the Timesheet Processing Facility receives your submission.2California Department of Social Services. Completing Your Timesheet There is no fixed payday on a calendar. When you submit is what determines when you get paid.
The Two Pay Periods Each Month
Every month has the same two pay periods, statewide, regardless of county:
- The 1st through the 15th.
- The 16th through the final day of the month.1California Department of Social Services. IHSS Provider Resources
You file one timesheet per period and receive one payment per period. Timesheets are due as soon as possible after the 15th and after the last day of the month.2California Department of Social Services. Completing Your Timesheet The ten-business-day processing clock starts when your submission reaches the Timesheet Processing Facility, so every day you delay pushes your deposit back by the same amount. A provider who submits the afternoon of the 15th will see money noticeably sooner than one who submits the following week.
Submitting Your Timesheet
The Electronic Services Portal (ESP) is the primary tool for entering and submitting timesheets, and it works on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. In one place you can enter hours, check payment status, and manage direct deposit.3California Department of Social Services. IHSS Electronic Services If you do not have internet access, the Telephone Timesheet System (TTS) lets you submit by phone. The IHSS EVV mobile app is the third option. Federal law requires electronic verification, so one of these three methods is mandatory.4California Department of Social Services. Electronic Visit Verification Help
Non-live-in providers have an extra step: check in when you arrive at the recipient’s location and check out when you leave, and indicate whether services were provided in the home or in the community.4California Department of Social Services. Electronic Visit Verification Help Those check-in and check-out times populate your electronic timesheet automatically, which cuts down on data entry at the end of the pay period.
The Approval Step
After you enter your hours and sign the timesheet electronically (certifying accuracy under penalty of perjury), it moves into pending status. The recipient then logs into their own ESP account or uses TTS to review and approve. If they see an error, they can reject the timesheet, which sends it back to you for correction. Once the recipient approves, the system generates a confirmation number and transmits the data for payment processing.
Rejected Timesheets Restart the Clock
A rejected timesheet resets the cycle. You correct the error, resubmit, and the recipient has to approve again. Each round trip adds days before the Timesheet Processing Facility ever sees the data, so accuracy on the first submission matters more than speed. Check daily totals against the recipient’s authorized weekly hours before you hit submit. Entering more hours than the county authorized is one of the most common reasons timesheets are rejected.
How the Money Reaches You
The California State Controller’s Office issues final payment after the Timesheet Processing Facility in Chico validates your submission.5State Controller’s Office. State Controller’s Functions From the date the facility receives your timesheet, you should be paid within ten business days.6California Department of Social Services. IHSS Pay Periods and Payroll Calendar
Direct deposit is significantly faster than a paper check. Funds usually appear within a few business days of processing, while paper checks travel through the mail and can take the full ten-day window or longer. You can enroll in direct deposit through the ESP by going to the Financial tab and clicking the Direct Deposit link. It takes about 30 days after enrollment before deposits begin, so sign up well before you need it.7California Department of Social Services. Direct Deposit A paper enrollment form (SOC 829) is also available on the CDSS website if you would rather not enroll online.
If Your Payment Is Late
If ten business days pass without payment, contact the IHSS Service Desk at (866) 376-7066.1California Department of Social Services. IHSS Provider Resources Your county IHSS office is another option, and the county has the authority to issue a replacement timesheet if needed.6California Department of Social Services. IHSS Pay Periods and Payroll Calendar Calling before ten business days have passed is early and you will likely be told to wait.
The Workweek Splits Pay Periods
The IHSS workweek runs from 12:00 a.m. Sunday through 11:59 p.m. the following Saturday.8California Department of Social Services. IHSS Provider Orientation – Workweek Scheduling Pay period boundaries and workweek boundaries rarely line up. The 15th might fall on a Wednesday, splitting that week between two timesheets.
Track carefully which hours belong to which timesheet. Overtime is calculated per workweek, not per pay period, so misallocating hours across that boundary can trigger a violation or delay your payment while the error is sorted out.
Hour Limits That Can Delay or Block Pay
Hours over 40 in a single workweek are paid at one and a half times your regular rate. IHSS caps a provider’s total hours across all recipients at 66 per workweek, and travel time between recipients is capped separately at seven hours per workweek.9California Department of Social Services. IHSS Overtime Exemption 2 Two narrow exemptions permit up to 90 hours per workweek (not to exceed 360 per month) for certain providers caring for two or more recipients; if neither applies to you, 66 hours is the ceiling.
Exceeding a limit is a workweek violation. You do still get paid for the excess hours you worked, but violations go on your record and escalate. A first violation is a written warning. A second offers a one-time chance to complete instructional review materials within 14 calendar days to have the violation rescinded. A third triggers a 90-day suspension of your provider eligibility, and a fourth suspends you for a full year.10California Department of Social Services. County Letter 16-36 – Violations for Exceeding Workweek Limitations A year without a new violation drops your count by one. During any suspension you cannot work or be paid through IHSS, which stops your payroll calendar completely.
Pay Rates and Checking Your Earnings
IHSS pay rates are set by individual counties rather than by the state, and they vary across California’s 58 counties.11California Department of Social Services. County IHSS Wage Rates CDSS publishes a current spreadsheet of county rates on its website. If you are unsure what you earn per hour, check with your county IHSS office or review your payment history through the ESP, which shows earnings breakdowns for each pay period.
Gross pay is subject to Social Security tax (6.2%) and Medicare tax (1.45%), with an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 in a calendar year.12Internal Revenue Service. Publication 926 (2026), Household Employer’s Tax Guide Federal income tax withholding is not automatic; it happens only if you submit a Form W-4 and the employer agrees. Certain family caregiving arrangements are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes entirely, including care provided to your spouse, your child under 21, or (with limited exceptions) your parent.13Internal Revenue Service.
