Illinois lets most drivers cited for a minor moving violation take a 4-hour online traffic school in place of a conviction, as long as the court grants supervision and you file your completion certificate before the deadline the judge sets. The process runs through court supervision: judgment on your ticket is paused, you finish an approved course, and the charge is dismissed. Miss the deadline and the supervision converts automatically into a conviction on your driving record.1Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. Who Qualifies
Most drivers with a standard, non-commercial Illinois license who receive a minor moving violation can use the course. The main limit is a 12-month lookback: if you have already enrolled in or completed traffic safety school for a violation within the past 12 months, you cannot use it again. That window generally starts from the sentencing date of the earlier ticket, not the date of the class.2McLean County, IL. Traffic Safety School
Drivers 21 and older can receive court supervision for up to two offenses in any 12-month period, but only one of those can involve traffic school. Drivers under 21 have to complete a traffic safety program as a condition of any supervision for a moving violation. Drivers under 18 cannot use the mail-in Rule 529 process at all; they must appear in court with a parent or legal guardian before supervision is granted.3Sangamon County Circuit Clerk. Who Is Shut Out
Check these before you pay for anything. Commercial driver’s license holders cannot use traffic safety school at all, regardless of whether they were driving a commercial or personal vehicle when they were ticketed.4Circuit Court of Cook County. Traffic Safety School and Payments
Drivers under 21 are also barred from the course for a specific list of more serious violations:
- Speeding 26 or more mph over the limit
- Reckless driving
- Leaving the scene of an accident
- Passing a school bus that is unloading children
- Driving in a no-passing zone
- Failing to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk
- Failing to stop for an approaching train
- Illegally transporting alcohol
- Driving without a valid license
Any driver who has already received supervision twice in the past 12 months is ineligible for a third round.4Circuit Court of Cook County. Traffic Safety School and Payments
Picking an Approved Provider
Before you enroll, gather three pieces of information: your Illinois driver’s license number, the citation number printed on your ticket, and the county where the violation occurred. The citation number is what links your course completion back to your case. One wrong digit and the court may never match your proof to your file. Double-check it.
Not every online course qualifies in every Illinois county. Each circuit court sets its own list of approved providers.1Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. Illinois Supreme Court Rule 529 – Written Pleas of Guilty in Minor Traffic Offenses Call the circuit clerk in the county where you received the ticket and ask which providers they accept. Paying for an unapproved course means the court will not recognize it.
What the Course Involves
The curriculum covers defensive driving, traffic law, and risk management, delivered through timed slides, videos, and scenario questions. Internal timers stop you from clicking through quickly. The platform is built so you actually spend the full four hours on the material.
At the end, there is a multiple-choice final exam. The passing score depends on the provider: some require 70%, others 80%.5Lewis and Clark Community College. Traffic Safety Confirm the threshold with your provider before you start. Most providers allow at least one retake if you miss on the first try.
What It Costs
You pay two separate amounts. The first is the statutory court assessment, which you owe regardless of whether you take the course. The second is the provider’s fee, typically $25 to $50 for online courses. Rule 529 makes clear the driver is responsible for all traffic safety program fees.1Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. Illinois Supreme Court Rule 529 – Written Pleas of Guilty in Minor Traffic Offenses
Total cost depends heavily on your county. Court costs for petty traffic offenses can run from roughly $225 to over $250, plus any fine the judge imposes and the course fee on top. Budget somewhere in the $275 to $350 range all in for a typical minor ticket, though your county may fall higher or lower. The circuit clerk’s office can give you a precise breakdown before you pay.
The Deadline and What Missing It Costs You
When the court grants supervision, it sets a termination date. You must complete the course and file your certificate of completion before that date. Some counties want the certificate in at least 30 days before supervision ends.2McLean County, IL. Traffic Safety School The supervision period can run up to two years, though for a routine ticket it is usually much shorter.6Illinois General Assembly. 730 ILCS 5/5-6-3.1
If no certificate of successful completion is on file by the termination date, supervision is revoked and a conviction is entered. There is no hearing, no second chance, and no warning letter.1Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. Illinois Supreme Court Rule 529 – Written Pleas of Guilty in Minor Traffic Offenses The conviction goes on your driving record, the Secretary of State can assign points, and your insurer can see it. Three or more convictions in 12 months can trigger a license suspension.7Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Traffic Offenses Do not wait until the last week.
Filing Your Completion Certificate
Once you pass, your provider issues a certificate of completion. How it reaches the court depends on the provider and county. Some file electronically with the circuit clerk on your behalf. Others mail you a paper certificate and leave delivery to you. Even when a provider offers electronic filing, Rule 529 puts the responsibility on you to confirm the certificate is filed on time.1Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. Illinois Supreme Court Rule 529 – Written Pleas of Guilty in Minor Traffic Offenses
Many counties accept the certificate three ways: mailed to the circuit clerk, dropped off in person, or uploaded through an electronic submission portal.8Sangamon County Circuit Clerk. Proof of Traffic School Attendance Keep a copy of the certificate and any confirmation emails. If the court has no record of your completion three weeks before the termination date, call the clerk’s office right away. Do not assume it arrived.
What Successful Completion Actually Protects
When you finish supervision successfully, the court dismisses the charge, and that dismissal is not treated as a conviction for any legal purpose, including the Illinois point system.6Illinois General Assembly. 730 ILCS 5/5-6-3.1 The Secretary of State does not assign points for a supervision that ends successfully. Because the point system suspends an adult driver’s license after three offenses in 12 months (and a driver under 21 after two in 24 months), keeping violations off your record this way is genuinely protective.7Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Traffic Offenses
Supervision records are also confidential. Courts can share them with law enforcement and the Secretary of State, but they cannot be released to insurance companies.9Circuit Court of Cook County. Court Supervision A completed supervision should not, on its own, cause your premiums to rise.
The protection has limits. If you pick up another moving violation while still on supervision for the first, the court can revoke the original supervision and enter a conviction on both cases.9Circuit Court of Cook County. Court Supervision The 4-hour course is a real second chance. Treat the supervision period accordingly.
