Illinois Antique Vehicle Plates: Eligibility, Fees, and Driving Limits

Illinois antique vehicle plates are a reduced-fee registration option available to any motor vehicle more than 25 years old (20 years for retired fire-fighting vehicles), carrying a 2026 fee of $24 and strict limits on when the car can be driven.¹² In exchange for the low fee and an exemption from state safety inspections, you agree to drive only to shows, exhibitions, service appointments, and demonstrations. If those limits feel too tight, Illinois also issues an expanded-use version that lifts them for nine months of the year.

Who Qualifies

The vehicle has to be more than 25 years old, or a bona fide replica of one. The word bona fide does real work here. A replica must copy the original in design, frame, and mechanical operation. A close reproduction, or facsimile, does not qualify.³ Fire-fighting vehicles reach the threshold at 20 years, provided they are no longer active equipment and are kept for exhibition or demonstration.²

Age alone is not enough. The car must be in its original condition, or in condition equivalently safe to when it left the factory. As part of the application, you sign an affirmation covering the mechanical condition, physical condition, brakes, lights, glass, and appearance.⁴ It is a legal declaration, not a formality.

How to Register and What It Costs

You apply through the Illinois Secretary of State. The application requires an owner affirmation that covers two things: you will operate the vehicle only for permitted purposes, and the vehicle meets the original-equipment safety baseline.⁴

The 2026 fee for random-number antique plates is $24.¹ Vanity and personalized antique plates are available under the same registration.⁴ The Secretary of State has discretion to issue antique plates for a definite or indefinite term matching the general registration cycle, so check the expiration on your specific plates rather than assuming a set renewal date.

Where and When You Can Drive

Standard antique plates are purpose-restricted. You may drive the vehicle on public roads only:

To and from an antique auto show or exhibition
To and from a service or repair facility
For demonstration purposes

That is the full list.⁴ Parades, cruise nights that are not tied to a show, errands, and commuting are not among the permitted uses. There is no annual mileage cap and no day count written into the statute; the limit is on why you are driving, not how far or how often. Operating an antique-plated car for general transportation puts you outside the terms of the registration and can expose you to citations for improper registration.

Expanded-Use Antique Plates

Illinois offers an alternative for owners who want to drive more freely. Expanded-use antique plates, issued under a separate provision, lift the standard restrictions from March through November. During those nine months you may drive the vehicle on public highways without the show-or-service limit. From December through February, the standard restrictions return, and driving is again confined to shows, exhibitions, service, and demonstration.⁵³

Eligibility is the same: more than 25 years old (20 for fire-fighting vehicles), in original or equivalently safe condition, and a bona fide replica if not the original. Facsimiles are excluded.³ For collectors who mainly drive during warm months and store the car through winter, this is often the more practical registration.

Year-of-Manufacture Plates

Illinois lets you display an authentic vintage Illinois license plate from the vehicle’s model year in place of the modern antique plate. A 1957 Chevrolet can wear a genuine 1957 Illinois plate on the road.

There is a condition. You must keep the current, valid Illinois antique plates and the registration card inside the vehicle at all times, available for inspection.⁴ The same allowance and the same in-car requirement apply to expanded-use antique vehicles.⁵ The displayed plate must be a historical Illinois-issued plate, not a reproduction or an out-of-state plate.

Safety Inspection Exemption

Vehicles registered with antique plates or expanded-use antique plates are exempt from the safety inspection requirements in Chapter 13 of the Illinois Vehicle Code.⁶ No certificate of safety is required.

The exemption shifts the safety obligation onto you. The affirmation you sign at registration is your commitment that the brakes, lights, glass, and overall condition match the original safety baseline.⁴ Nobody inspects the car for you.

Insurance

Illinois liability insurance rules still apply to any vehicle driven on public roads, and antique-plated cars are not exempt. What tends to change is the type of policy that fits. Standard auto policies pay depreciated value on a total loss, which sits badly with a car that appreciates. Collector policies commonly use agreed-value coverage, where you and the insurer set the vehicle’s worth up front, so a total loss pays that agreed figure rather than a depreciation calculation. Stated-amount coverage is a cheaper alternative that caps a loss payout at the lower of repair cost, actual cash value, or the stated figure, which can disappoint if the market value has climbed.

Collector policies often require enclosed, locked storage and impose annual mileage limits, frequently between 1,000 and 7,500 miles. Those conditions line up naturally with how antique plates are meant to be used, which is part of why premiums on antique-plated vehicles tend to run lower than a standard policy on the same car.
