Which Transactions Need an Appointment

What to Bring for a REAL ID
Since May 7, 2025, TSA and other federal agencies require a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. A valid U.S. passport works too.2TSA. Bring proof of identity such as a birth certificate or valid passport, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents showing Illinois residency, like utility bills or bank statements. If you already hold a valid Illinois license or state ID, the SOS can re-verify your SSN electronically, so a separate SSN document may not be needed.3ILSOS.gov. What to Bring for a Standard License, State ID, or Vehicle Transaction
For a standard (non-REAL ID) driver’s license or state ID, bring original, unexpired documents proving your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, written signature, and Illinois residency. For a vehicle title or registration transaction, bring the certificate of title and proof of current Illinois auto insurance.5ILSOS.gov. The Vision Screening at Your Visit
If you are applying for or renewing a driver’s license, you will take a vision screening during the same appointment. The standard is 20/40 acuity with both eyes open, with or without correction.6ILSOS.gov. Medical and Vision Conditions Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them. If you fail, you will need a vision specialist report before retesting.
Ways to Skip the Facility Altogether
If you are renewing a standard driver’s license and have a clean record, the Safe Driver Renewal program lets you renew online, by phone, or by mail with no facility visit. You need a driving record with no traffic convictions, no court supervision orders, and no accidents on file, and you must be 21 to 74 years old with a license that has not been expired for more than a year.7Illinois General Assembly. A few disqualifiers apply. You cannot use Safe Driver Renewal if your last two consecutive renewals were both remote, since the state periodically needs to verify identity and update your photo. CDL holders, school bus permit holders, and anyone required to submit medical or vision reports are also ineligible.7Illinois General Assembly. Other online transactions cover vehicle registration renewal, license plate renewal, and address updates.8Illinois.gov. All Services Self-service kiosks at some locations handle plate sticker renewals, and authorized currency exchanges can process them too. Some renewals also work by mail when the renewal notice you receive says so; the notice includes instructions and a return envelope.
The Day of Your Appointment
Arrive a few minutes early with your confirmation number and every required document. Facilities can turn away visitors whose appointments have lapsed or whose paperwork is incomplete, and rebooking means waiting for a new slot to open. A quick check against the SOS checklist the night before is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
