Which Facilities Have Saturday Hours

The Secretary of State’s office periodically expands Saturday access during high-demand periods. In summer 2025, 13 additional facilities offered walk-in Saturday service for about a month, and 8 others ran Saturday appointment-only hours during the same window. Those temporary expansions end and the Saturday list shrinks again. A location that was open last Saturday may not be open next Saturday.

Appointments or Walk-In on Saturday
Since September 2023, 44 of the busiest Driver Services locations have required appointments for license, ID, and REAL ID services, along with driving tests. Facilities outside that group generally take walk-ins. Saturday rules can differ from weekday rules at the same location, though: some Saturday facilities take walk-ins and others require appointments even on weekends. If you need an appointment, book early. Saturday slots fill quickly, especially at suburban facilities. Showing up without an appointment at an appointment-required location means being turned away.
What You Can Do on a Saturday Visit
Saturday facilities handle the transactions most people come in for:
- Driver’s license: new applications, renewals, and replacements
- State ID cards: new applications, renewals, and replacements
- REAL ID applications and upgrades from a standard license or ID
- Vehicle registration renewals and new registrations
- Disability placard applications and renewals
REAL ID
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. Without a REAL ID or another federally accepted document such as a valid U.S. passport, you’ll face a $45 fee when boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal facilities.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID requires more documentation than a standard renewal. Bring all of the following:
- Proof of identity: a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or consular report of birth abroad
- Social Security verification: your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing your full SSN
- Two proofs of Illinois residency: utility bills, bank statements, mortgage documents, or similar items showing your current address

Consider Skipping the Trip
Before committing to a Saturday visit, check whether you need to go in person at all. The Secretary of State’s office handles several transactions online:
- License and ID renewal for eligible drivers
- Replacement license or ID if yours was lost or stolen
- License plate registration renewal
- Personalized or specialty plate orders
- Driver’s license reinstatement fee payments

Online license renewal isn’t open to everyone. Illinois uses a Safe Driver designation: your record needs to be free of traffic convictions, and you can’t have renewed remotely for your last two consecutive cycles. Documents and Fees
For a standard driver’s license or state ID renewal without a REAL ID upgrade, you generally need your current license or ID and a payment method. First-time applicants and anyone making changes need more.
Any license or ID transaction requires proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving your current Illinois address.5Official Website of the Illinois Secretary of State. Utility bills, bank statements, or insurance documents showing your name and current address satisfy residency.

- Ages 18 to 20: $5
- Ages 21 to 68: $30
- Ages 69 to 80: $5
- Ages 81 to 86: $2
- Age 87 and older: free
These apply to both new licenses and renewals. REAL ID upgrades cost the same as a standard license at your age bracket. Not all locations accept cash, so a debit or credit card is the safest bet.
Getting the Most Out of a Saturday Visit
Saturday facilities run busier per hour than weekday visits because fewer locations are open and everyone with a Monday-to-Friday job is competing for the same slots.
Arrive early. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., and the people already in line at opening have the shortest waits. Wait times climb by mid-morning. Facilities close at noon, and if you’re not in line by then, you won’t be seen.
