An Illinois driver’s license renewal goes through the Secretary of State’s office, and you can start up to one year before your expiration date. Eligible drivers with clean records renew online or by mail through the Safe Driver Renewal program; everyone else visits a Driver Services facility. Fees range from free to $30 depending on your age, and upgrading to a REAL ID requires an in-person visit regardless of eligibility.
When Your License Expires
Your renewal cycle depends on your age. Standard adult licenses issued to drivers between 21 and 80 expire four years from the date of issuance.1Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-115 – Expiration of Drivers License Other brackets are shorter:
- Under 21: your license expires three months after your 21st birthday, then you move to the standard four-year cycle.
- Ages 81 through 86: two years.
- Age 87 and older: one year.

Can You Renew Online or By Mail
The Safe Driver Renewal program lets qualifying drivers skip the in-person trip, the written test, and the road test. About 90 days before your license expires, the Secretary of State mails a renewal notice with a PIN or Renewal Authorization Number you’ll need to complete the process remotely.2Illinois General Assembly. You qualify if your driving record is clean for the current license cycle. You do not qualify — and must renew in person — if you need to take a written or road exam, submit a medical or vision report, or upgrade to a REAL ID.3Illinois Secretary of State. How to Renew
Online
Go to apps.ilsos.gov/renewaldlid, enter the authorization credentials from your renewal letter, confirm your personal information, and pay by credit card, debit card, or e-check. By Mail
Your renewal letter includes a paper application. Complete it, sign it exactly as your name appears on your current license, and mail it to the address printed on the form. The same eligibility rules apply as online renewal.
In Person
If you don’t qualify for remote renewal, visit a Driver Services facility. Staff verify your documents, run a vision screening, and take a new photo. You need binocular acuity of 20/40 or better to pass without restrictions.4Legal Information Institute. REAL ID at Renewal
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025.6Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID You now need a REAL ID-compliant license, a passport, or another accepted federal document to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. Check the upper-right corner of your current card: no gold star means it isn’t compliant.
Renewal is a natural moment to upgrade, but you cannot do it online or by mail. A REAL ID requires an in-person visit and the full document set.3Illinois Secretary of State. Driver’s License and State ID Card Renewal If you already hold a REAL ID and your address hasn’t changed, the document requirement is lighter.
What to Bring for In-Person Renewal
The Secretary of State sorts acceptable documents into four groups: Group A (signature, such as your current license or U.S. passport), Group B (date of birth, such as a birth certificate), Group C (Social Security number, such as your SSN card, W-2, or pay stub), and Group D (Illinois residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement).7Illinois Secretary of State. For a standard license renewal, you need one Group A document, plus one Group D document only if your address has changed. A REAL ID renewal requires one Group A and two Group D if your address changed. When Your New Card Arrives
You don’t leave with your permanent card. An in-person renewal produces a temporary paper license valid for up to 90 days that works as both your driving credential and proof of identity while you wait.8Legal Information Institute. Driver’s License and State ID Card Renewal If more time passes without a card in hand, contact the Secretary of State’s office or check the tracking tool on ilsos.gov.
If Your License Has Already Expired
Driving on an expired license is a petty offense in Illinois, carrying a fine of up to $500. Once the license has been expired for more than a year, the charge escalates to a Class B misdemeanor.9Illinois General Assembly. An expired license that sits for more than a year also triggers reexamination. You’ll have to retake the written test and possibly the road test, like a first-time applicant.10Justia Law. Address Changes and Voter Registration
If you’ve moved, Illinois requires you to notify the Secretary of State in writing within 10 days of the change.11Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code tit. 92, 1030.115 – Change-of-Address Renewal is a convenient moment to handle it, but the 10-day clock runs regardless of when your license expires.
During any renewal, the Secretary of State also offers to register you as an organ donor and to register you to vote or update an existing registration, in keeping with the National Voter Registration Act.12Department of Justice.
