Illinois Driver’s License Replacement: Online, In Person, and Costs

To get an Illinois driver’s license replacement, order a duplicate for $5 through the Secretary of State’s website or in person at any Driver Services facility. Drivers 60 and older pay nothing, active-duty military members and their families pay nothing, and anyone who files a police report for a stolen license gets the replacement free at any age. The online option is faster and requires no documents, but it will not issue you a temporary license, so if you need immediate proof that you’re licensed, go in person.

Replacing Your License Online

The Secretary of State’s online duplicate system is the fastest route. You don’t gather documents, sit in a waiting room, or take a new photo. The card is mailed to the address already on your driving record, and the Secretary of State’s FAQ estimates delivery within 7 to 10 days.1Illinois Secretary of State. Not everyone qualifies. You cannot use the online system if any of the following apply:2Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

  • Your driving privileges are suspended, revoked, canceled, or held by a court in lieu of bail.
  • Your license expires within the next 30 days (you need a renewal, not a duplicate).
  • You previously changed your address online or by mail.
  • You hold a license in another state.
  • You’ve already ordered three replacements in the past 12 months, or ten in your lifetime.
  • You need to change your name, photo, physical description, or any other information on the card.

One trade-off matters. The online system does not issue a temporary license, and once you finish the online transaction you cannot then visit a facility to get one. If your wallet was stolen and you have no other ID to fall back on, applying in person is the better choice.2Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

The portal accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and electronic checks. A payment processor fee applies to credit cards; the e-check processing fee is currently waived.2Illinois Secretary of State. Duplicate Driver’s License or ID Card

Replacing Your License In Person

Most Driver Services transactions require a scheduled appointment, which you can book through the Secretary of State’s website.3Illinois Secretary of State. Appointments Walk-in availability varies by location, so scheduling ahead avoids a wasted trip.

At your appointment, a technician reviews your documents, takes a new photograph, and may run a brief vision screening. You’ll verify or update your signature. Payment is accepted by cash, check, or card.

Before you leave, the facility issues a temporary paper license that serves as your legal driving credential while the permanent card is manufactured. The temporary is valid for up to 90 days.4Cornell Law Institute. Illinois Admin Code Title 92, 1030.89 – Temporary Driver’s Licenses and Temporary Instruction Permits

Documents to Bring

How much paperwork you need depends on what you’re doing. A simple duplicate of your current standard license takes one document from Group A (a written-signature document such as a current credit or debit card, a recently expired Illinois license, a U.S. passport, a Social Security card, or a canceled check dated within 90 days).5Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

Upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time is heavier. You need at least one document from each of four groups (written signature, date of birth, Social Security number, and residency), plus a second residency document. Renewing or correcting an existing REAL ID without an address change drops to one Group A document and two residency proofs. Not every document counts for REAL ID purposes, so check the Secretary of State’s REAL ID checklist tool at realid.ilsos.gov before your visit.5Illinois Secretary of State. All documents must be originals. Photocopies and printouts of scanned documents are not accepted. If your name has changed since your last license, bring a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that connects your current name to the name on your other identification.

What a Replacement Costs

The standard fee is $5, regardless of age or license class.6Illinois Secretary of State. Basic Fees Three groups pay nothing:

  • Drivers 60 and older whose license was lost or stolen.6Illinois Secretary of State. Basic Fees
  • Anyone with a police report documenting a stolen license, at any age.6Illinois Secretary of State. Basic Fees
  • Active-duty military members, their spouses, and dependent children living with them.6Illinois Secretary of State. Basic Fees

If you’re unsure whether your license was stolen or simply lost, filing a police report costs nothing and waives the $5 fee if theft is possible.

Should You Upgrade to a REAL ID While You’re There?

Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Without a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable federal document such as a passport, TSA now charges $45 to pass through airport security, or $90 for trips lasting more than 10 days. TSA requires the permanent REAL ID card; a temporary paper license will not exempt you from the fee.8Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID

If your lost or damaged license was already REAL ID-compliant, a straight duplicate preserves that status. If you’ve been carrying a standard license and want to upgrade, a replacement visit is a natural moment to do it. Upgrading means bringing the full document set from all four groups, including two residency proofs, and it cannot be done online.

If you don’t fly domestically, or you carry a valid U.S. passport, a standard license still works fine for driving and everyday identification.

If Your License Was Stolen

A stolen license shows your full name, date of birth, address, and photo, which is enough for someone to open accounts or commit fraud in your name. Take these steps alongside your replacement application:

File a police report. The report waives the $5 replacement fee and creates a paper trail if fraudulent activity surfaces later.

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze. Contact any one of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion) to place a fraud alert, and that bureau must notify the other two. An initial fraud alert lasts one year. For stronger protection, place a credit freeze with all three bureaus at no cost; it blocks anyone from opening new credit accounts in your name until you lift it.9Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

Monitor your credit reports. You’re entitled to one free report per year from each bureau. Spacing requests four months apart gives year-round visibility. If a new account appears that you didn’t open, the police report you already filed becomes immediately useful.

Replacing Your License From Out of State

If you lose your license while traveling or living outside Illinois, you don’t have to drive back. The Secretary of State’s Out-of-State Licensing Unit can be reached at 217-782-2720. If you’ll be away for more than 90 days, the office will mail you application forms so you can request a duplicate by mail.1Illinois Secretary of State. Driver’s License and State ID FAQ

For shorter absences, that same number is the right first call. A mail-based replacement won’t include a temporary license, so you’ll be without physical proof of your driving privileges until the permanent card arrives.

When Your Card Will Arrive

Illinois uses central issuance: your permanent license is manufactured at a secure facility and mailed via U.S. Postal Service to the address on your driving record. Confirm your mailing address before submitting any replacement request. The card is sent to whatever address the Secretary of State has on file, not necessarily the address printed on your old license if you’ve moved. An address change and a duplicate order are separate transactions, and the address change has to be processed first.
