The Illinois driver’s license written test is a 35-question exam given on a touchscreen at any Secretary of State Driver Services facility, and you need 28 correct answers — an 80% score — to pass. Fifteen questions cover traffic sign identification and the remaining 20 cover Illinois driving laws and safe-driving scenarios in multiple-choice and true-or-false formats.1Illinois Secretary of State. A Practical Guide for Illinois Drivers – Section: Written Exam The system scores your test the moment you answer the last question, so you’ll know before leaving the terminal.
What the Test Covers
Every question comes from the Illinois Rules of the Road manual, a free publication from the Secretary of State.2Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Rules of the Road The state’s written exam tests your ability to read and understand official traffic control devices and your knowledge of safe driving practices and Illinois traffic laws.3FindLaw. Illinois Code 625 ILCS 5/6-109 – Examination of Applicants The main topics:
- Traffic sign identification by shape and color. An octagonal red sign means stop. A diamond-shaped yellow sign warns of a hazard. A round yellow sign marks a railroad crossing. A pentagon means school zone, an inverted triangle means yield, and a pennant marks a no-passing zone. This section is nearly half the test.
- Right-of-way rules at intersections, with malfunctioning signals, and involving pedestrians.
- Pavement markings, including solid versus broken yellow center lines and what white edge lines indicate.
- Speed limits for residential streets, highways, and school zones, and Illinois’s primary seat belt law, which allows police to stop a driver solely for an unbuckled belt.
- Safe driving practices such as following distances, adverse weather, and highway breakdowns.
- Alcohol-related laws. Illinois uses a 0.08% BAC limit for drivers 21 and older and a zero-tolerance standard for drivers under 21.
Illinois’s financial responsibility requirements and rules on when you must file a crash report also come up. The manual covers each area in enough depth to answer any test question.
Test Format and Passing Score
You take the whole test on a touchscreen computer. There is no paper. Questions appear one at a time, and you cannot skip a question and return to it later. There is no partial credit.
Passing is 28 correct out of 35, or 80%. The 15 sign items ask you to recognize what a sign means from its shape, color, or symbol; the other 20 questions cover laws and driving scenarios in multiple-choice or true-or-false form.1Illinois Secretary of State. What to Bring
Illinois uses a group-based document system. For a first-time REAL ID-compliant license you need one document from each of Groups A, B, and C, plus two from Group D.4Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card Many single documents count toward more than one group.
- Group A, written signature: a U.S. passport, Social Security card, major-brand credit or debit card, current Illinois driver’s license or ID card, or a military ID.
- Group B, date of birth: a birth certificate, U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, or permanent resident card. The document must show your full legal name and complete date of birth.
- Group C, Social Security number: a Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your name and SSN.
- Group D, residency: two documents such as a bank statement, utility bill, lease, or insurance policy, each dated within 90 days of your application.
Your application must state your legal name, date of birth, residence address, and Social Security number, and it asks you to disclose medical conditions that could impair safe driving.5Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-106 – Application for License or Instruction Permit
One boundary worth flagging: a standard Illinois license won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint. Federal REAL ID enforcement took effect on May 7, 2025, so if you plan to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities using your license, you need the REAL ID-compliant version.6Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID The license fee is the same either way, and applying for REAL ID at your written test visit saves a return trip.
What Happens at the Facility
You can schedule an appointment by calling 800-252-8980 or using the Secretary of State’s website. Walk-ins are generally accepted, but an appointment cuts the wait.
Check-in comes first. A staff member reviews your documents and runs your information against the National Driver Register. If another state has an active suspension or revocation on your record, Illinois can deny your application until that’s resolved.7National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. National Driver Register Frequently Asked Questions
Then you pay. A standard four-year license is $30 for adults under 69. Applicants 69 through 80 pay $5, those 81 through 86 pay $2, and drivers 87 or older pay nothing. A first-time instruction permit is $20.8Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-118 – Fees
You’ll be directed to a touchscreen terminal for the written test. Either before or after, you take a vision screening. Unrestricted licensing requires at least 20/40 binocular acuity. Acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 gets you a daytime-only restriction. Corrective lenses are allowed, but if you wear them during the screening, the restriction shows on your license.9Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92, Section 1030.70 – Driver’s License Testing/Vision Screening
First-time drivers also complete a road skills test. Once everything clears, the facility issues a temporary paper license valid for up to 90 days.10Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92, Section 1030.89 – Temporary Driver’s Licenses and Temporary Instruction Permits Your permanent card arrives by mail, typically within 15 business days.
If You Fail
Your application fee covers up to three attempts within one year of the date you applied.5Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-106 – Application for License or Instruction Permit You don’t pay again for those retakes. Fail all three, or let the year lapse, and you’ll submit a new application with a new fee.
The state doesn’t impose a waiting period between attempts, though a given facility’s schedule may. After a failed attempt, go back to the manual and focus on whatever section tripped you up. Most people who fail get caught on sign identification, because they studied the law questions and assumed they’d recognize signs by instinct.
Applicants Under 18
Teen drivers take the same 35-question exam, but the path to a full license runs through Illinois’s graduated driver licensing program.11Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois GDL Parent-Teen Driving Guide
You can apply for an instruction permit at 15 if you’re enrolled in an approved driver education course, and a parent or legal guardian must consent.12Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-107 – Instruction Permits and Graduated Driver’s Licenses The permit must be held for at least nine months, with 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) logged with a licensed adult 21 or older. Curfew runs 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday. All handheld and hands-free cellphone use is banned for drivers under 19 except to call emergency services. Any driving infraction or underage alcohol conviction during the permit period resets the nine-month clock.
A graduated license is available at 16 for teens who completed driver education, held the permit nine months, and whose parent certifies the 50 hours. For the first 12 months (or until 18, whichever comes first), passengers are limited to one person under 20 unless the passenger is a sibling or the driver’s child. The teen must also be enrolled in school, homeschooled, or hold a diploma.12Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Compiled Statutes 625 ILCS 5/6-107 – Instruction Permits and Graduated Driver’s Licenses A traffic conviction during this phase can extend GDL restrictions past the 18th birthday.
Languages and Accommodations
The test is given in English, and Illinois rules give the Secretary of State discretion to offer it in other languages where there’s demand.13Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code Title 92, Section 1030.80 – Driver’s License Testing/Written Test Many facilities offer Spanish, Polish, and Chinese, among others, but availability varies by location. Call the facility or the Secretary of State before your visit if you need a specific language.
Applicants with disabilities can request accommodations, which may include oral readers, extended time, or audio-assisted formats. Contact the facility ahead of time or call 800-252-8980. Bringing documentation from a medical professional supporting the request can speed up approval.
How to Study
The Illinois Rules of the Road manual is the only study resource you really need. It’s free as a PDF from the Secretary of State’s website or as a printed booklet at any Driver Services facility.2Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Rules of the Road Generic “DMV practice test” apps often use content from other states with different signs and rules, so stick with Illinois-specific material.
Spend real time on the sign chapters. The 15 sign questions strip away text and ask you to identify a sign by its shape or color alone, and that’s where overconfident test-takers lose points. On the law side, focus on right-of-way scenarios, BAC limits, seat belt rules, and what to do at a crash scene. Those topics recur.
