Signing In to the FSB Portal

The ispfsb.com portal is the only official place to renew a FOID card online, and the same login also handles concealed carry license applications. If you have an account, enter your username and password to reach the dashboard, which shows your card’s expiration status and routes you into the renewal application.

If you’ve never registered, or you’ve lost your old credentials, you’ll need to create a new account. Registration links your personal information to the ISP law enforcement database, so keep your Illinois driver’s license or state ID within reach during setup. Pick a password you’ll remember. Getting locked out mid-application is a common headache, and the portal can time out during long pauses, which means a half-finished form is gone.

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Pull these together before you open the application:

  • Your Illinois driver’s license or state ID number, used to verify identity and residency.
  • Your current FOID card number, printed on the face of the card.

Make sure the address on your renewal matches the address on file with the Secretary of State. A mismatch between your FOID application and your driver’s license can flag the application for manual review and delay processing.

Answering the Eligibility Questions Honestly

The renewal application asks about criminal history, mental health history, and other eligibility factors. Answer accurately. ISP cross-references your responses against state and federal databases, and false answers on a FOID application are a felony under Illinois law.

  • A felony conviction under Illinois law or the law of another state.
  • Narcotics addiction, which under federal law includes marijuana use regardless of Illinois legalization.
  • Admission to a mental health facility within the past five years, unless you’ve obtained a certification clearing you for firearm possession.
  • An active order of protection, a domestic battery conviction, or a conviction that triggers the federal domestic violence firearms prohibition.
  • For applicants under 21, a non-traffic misdemeanor conviction or a juvenile delinquency adjudication.
  • A conviction for battery, assault, aggravated assault, or violation of an order of protection within the past five years.

Submitting and Paying

After you answer the eligibility questions and upload your photo, the portal opens a confirmation screen. Review everything, especially your mailing address, since that’s where your card will be sent.

Confirming your information sends you to a secure payment page run by the State Treasurer’s office. Enter your card details. When payment goes through, you’re returned to the FSB dashboard for the final submission step. Paying alone doesn’t complete the process. You have to click submit to transmit the application to ISP. A receipt page confirms that ISP received your renewal, and a confirmation email lands at the address tied to your account. Save both.

Processing Time and Card Validity

Illinois law gives ISP 60 business days to approve or deny a renewal filed before the card expires. New applications carry a shorter 30-day statutory deadline. Actual processing times have fluctuated over the years, and backlogs have at times pushed waits well beyond those windows. You can log back into the portal any time to check your application status.

Once approved, a FOID card is valid for ten years from the date of issuance.5Legal Information Institute. Skipping the Manual Renewal With Fingerprints

Illinois offers a way around the manual renewal entirely. If you submit a full set of fingerprints to ISP through a live scan vendor licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, your FOID card automatically renews for another ten years each time ISP approves a Firearms Transfer Inquiry Program (FTIP) transaction in your name.6Illinois State Police. You can visit a live scan vendor at any time and upload the results to your ispfsb.com account. It’s worth doing if you buy firearms regularly, because every approved transfer resets your ten-year clock without any paperwork. You still have to stay eligible under the FOID Act; automatic renewal doesn’t override a revocation or suspension.

What Happens if Your Card Expires

An expired FOID card means you can no longer legally purchase or possess firearms or ammunition in Illinois. ISP’s position is that firearms in the possession of someone with an expired card must be transferred to a lawfully eligible person, either through a federally licensed dealer or ISP’s person-to-person transfer verification portal.3Illinois State Police. The penalty depends on how long the card has been expired and whether you’re otherwise eligible to renew:

  • Expired six months or less, otherwise eligible: a petty offense, typically resulting in a fine.
  • Expired more than six months, otherwise eligible to renew: a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
  • Expired and ineligible to renew: a Class 3 felony, carrying two to five years in prison.

No statutory grace period automatically extends your card while a renewal is pending. That’s why filing early matters. If your renewal is stuck in the queue and your card expires in the meantime, you’re in a gray area that depends on prosecutorial discretion, and keeping a copy of your renewal confirmation receipt helps show you acted in good faith.

Replacements and Address Changes

A lost, stolen, or destroyed card can be replaced for $5, but only if you report the loss to ISP. An address or name change on an existing card also costs $5.7Illinois General Assembly. Keep your address current, because ISP mails cards and correspondence there, and any mismatch with your driver’s license can hold up future transactions.

If Your Renewal Is Denied

  • The FOID Card Review Board hears denials based on mental health admissions within the past five years, intellectual or developmental disabilities, clear-and-present-danger determinations, and most felony-based denials outside the categories below.
  • The circuit court in your county of residence hears denials based on forcible felonies, stalking, aggravated stalking, domestic battery, Class 2 or higher controlled substance felonies, and weapons offense felonies.

You have 60 days from the date you receive the denial notice to file your appeal with the correct body. Miss that window and the case closes, leaving you to submit a new application and go through the whole cycle again.
