Illinois Food Stamps: Eligibility, Link Card, and How to Apply

Illinois food stamps, officially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), pay a single person up to $298 a month and a family of four up to $994 a month, loaded onto an Illinois Link card that works like a debit card at grocery stores. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) runs the program, and most households qualify if their gross monthly income is at or below 165% of the Federal Poverty Level. You apply online at abe.illinois.gov, and the state has 30 days to decide your case.

Who Qualifies in Illinois

Eligibility starts with gross monthly income — everything your household brings in before deductions, including wages, Social Security, child support, and similar payments. Illinois counts income from everyone who lives and eats together. For federal fiscal year 2026, the gross income ceilings are:1Illinois Department of Human Services. • 1 person: $2,152
  • 2 people: $2,909
  • 3 people: $3,665
  • 4 people: $4,421
  • 5 people: $5,177
  • 6 people: $5,934

Each additional person raises the limit by about $757.

Most Illinois households face no asset test. The state uses broad-based categorical eligibility, which waives the asset limit for categorically eligible households. Lottery or gambling winnings above $4,500 in a single game must be reported either way.2Illinois Department of Human Services. PM 07-04-01 – Asset Limits Households that are not categorically eligible do face limits of $3,000, or $4,500 if the household includes an elderly or disabled member; cash, bank accounts, stocks, and bonds count, but your home and most retirement accounts do not.

  • 7 people: $1,571
  • 8 people: $1,789
  • Each additional person: add $218

You get the maximum only if your household has zero countable income after deductions. Most households get less, because SNAP is designed to supplement your food budget rather than replace it. The formula takes the maximum for your household size and subtracts 30% of your countable net income. One- and two-person households that qualify always receive at least $24 a month, even if the formula produces a smaller number.

Net income is your gross income minus allowable deductions: a standard deduction of $209 for households of one to three, 20% of earned income, shelter costs above a threshold, dependent care, and child support you pay out.4Food and Nutrition Service. Keeping Your Benefits

Most Illinois SNAP households are certified for six months. Near the end of that period, IDHS mails a redetermination form during the first day of the month before your last month of benefits.
