TTY users can call 1-866-324-5553.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Contact IDHS A representative can pull up your case, confirm whether your coverage is active, and tell you your redetermination date. If your question is about what your coverage actually pays for rather than whether you have it, a separate hotline handles that, and providers use a different line altogether.

Which Line to Call

Illinois splits Medicaid administration between two agencies, and each runs its own phone line for different kinds of questions. Picking the right one keeps you from getting transferred.

What to Have Ready Before You Dial

Keep your HFS medical card in front of you. The nine-digit Recipient Identification Number (RIN) printed on the front of the card, under your name, is the primary identifier the state’s systems use to pull up your file.4Illinois Department of Human Services. Chapter Fifteen – RIN (Recipient Identification Number) Also have your Social Security number and date of birth ready. The representative will use them to confirm your identity before discussing your case.

If you’re calling on behalf of someone else, be prepared for the representative to ask whether you’re authorized on the case. If you’re not listed, the state generally won’t share case details with you.

If You’ve Lost Your Medical Card

You can still call without the card. Older letters from DHS or HFS approving your benefits usually list your RIN, so dig those out first. If you’re trying to use coverage at a doctor’s office in the meantime, a provider can look you up with a photo ID plus any one of your RIN, Social Security number, or date of birth. Checking Eligibility Online Instead

If you’d rather skip the phone queue, the state’s Application for Benefits Eligibility (ABE) portal at abe.illinois.gov handles most of what the phone line does. Through Manage My Case you can see your current eligibility status, view benefit details, check your redetermination due date, report changes in income or household size, renew coverage, upload documents, and file an appeal.6Illinois Application for Benefits Eligibility. ABE Home You’ll need to create an account or log in to an existing one. The portal is available around the clock aside from occasional scheduled maintenance.

The provider-facing electronic system, called the Recipient Eligibility Verification (REV) program, gives providers real-time eligibility data, managed care enrollment details, and claims history through an approved vendor. Individual members can’t access REV.7Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. Recipient Eligibility Verification Program (REV)

What the Status You Hear Back Means

However you check, expect the answer to come back as one of a few statuses, and each calls for something different from you.

Active means your enrollment is current. You can keep using your medical card at any participating provider.

Pending means your application or renewal is still being processed. Watch your mail for letters asking for additional documentation, and if you haven’t heard anything within a few weeks, call your caseworker.5Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. After Applying for Medicaid

Canceled means your coverage has ended. Don’t sit on it. Log into ABE to submit a renewal or report changes, and call the DHS Help Line to find out the specific reason, which is usually a missed renewal, an income change, or missing documentation. How fast you respond determines whether you can be reinstated without starting a new application from scratch.

For Providers Verifying a Patient

Providers calling the AVRS line at 1-800-842-1461 need their own 9-, 10-, or 12-digit Medicaid provider number, the patient’s nine-digit RIN, and the specific date of service they need eligibility confirmed for.3Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. National Provider Identifier Standard The AVRS line runs 24 hours a day, which makes it the practical option for evening or weekend verification when the DHS Help Line is closed.

If You Can’t Get Through

Call volume on the DHS Help Line runs heaviest at the start and end of the workday and on Mondays. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon calls tend to move faster. If the phone route isn’t working, ABE Manage My Case shows the same core information the phone representative would read to you, and it’s available at any hour. Your local Family Community Resource Center can also confirm your case status in person.
