The Illinois motorcycle sales tax rate is 6.25% of the purchase price when you buy from a dealer, plus any local sales tax where you live, which can push the combined rate to roughly 11% in the highest-taxed municipalities. Buy from a private seller instead, and Illinois charges a flat $25, no matter what you paid for the bike.1Illinois General Assembly. Buying From a Dealer
A licensed dealer collects tax under the Retailers’ Occupation Tax Act. The state’s share is 6.25% of the purchase price, and the dealer reports and remits it to the Illinois Department of Revenue on Form ST-556.1Illinois General Assembly. Local tax stacks on top of the 6.25%, and it’s based on where you live, not where you buy. Home-rule municipalities and counties can add sales tax in 0.25% increments with no cap; non-home-rule municipalities can add up to 1% in the same increments.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Home Rule and Non-home Rule Sales Taxes Combined rates run from 6.25% in areas with no local add-on to about 11% at the top end. On a $15,000 motorcycle, that’s a spread of roughly $937.50 to $1,650 in tax based on address alone. The Department of Revenue’s Tax Rate Finder gives the exact combined rate for a given location.
Trade-Ins Reduce the Taxable Amount
If you trade your current bike in at the dealer, tax applies to the difference between the new motorcycle’s price and your trade-in credit, not the full sticker price. That treatment is standard on Form ST-556. It does not apply to private party sales; Illinois disallows the trade-in deduction on Form RUT-50.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Vehicle Tax FAQs
Buying From a Private Seller
Motorcycles are treated differently from cars and trucks in private sales. The Private Party Vehicle Use Tax on a motorcycle is a flat $25, whether the bike is new or twenty years old and whether you paid $800 or $18,000.2Illinois Department of Revenue. RUT-5, Private Party Vehicle Use Tax Chart for 2026 The same $25 applies to motor-driven cycles, ATVs, and motorized pedalcycles.
One thing to be aware of: the tiered price-bracket schedule you may have seen (for example, $850 on a $15,000–$19,999 vehicle, climbing into the thousands on more expensive ones) is for cars, trucks, and vans. It does not apply to motorcycles. Plenty of buyers assume it does and overpay.
Buying Out of State
Bringing a motorcycle in from another state doesn’t let you skip Illinois tax, but you generally won’t pay twice. Illinois gives a credit for sales tax properly paid to another state under the Use Tax Act.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Vehicle Tax FAQs If the other state’s rate was 5% and Illinois would charge 6.25%, you owe the 1.25% difference. If the other state’s rate matched or exceeded Illinois’s, you may owe nothing more.

What Happens If You File Late
Late filings fall under the Illinois Uniform Penalty and Interest Act. Pay within 30 days after the due date and the penalty is 2% of the tax owed. Beyond 30 days late, it climbs to 10%. If the Department of Revenue starts an audit or investigation before you pay, the penalty can reach 20%. Interest also accrues on unpaid tax from the original due date.
On a $25 private party motorcycle tax, those percentages barely matter. On a dealer purchase where the tax runs into the hundreds or thousands, they add up quickly. The cleanest way to avoid trouble is to handle the tax paperwork and payment at the same time you title and register the motorcycle, since everything goes through the same office.
