When to Renew

Don’t wait for the notice to arrive before acting. You can log in and renew as soon as the window is open.
How to Renew Online
Renewals go through the IDFPR Online Services portal. To log in you need your Social Security number, your current PERC license number, and a working email address. First-time portal users have to create an account and link it to the existing license.
Once you’re in, the portal walks you through screens that confirm your personal information, ask disclosure questions about any changes to your criminal history or professional status since the last renewal, and let you review your profile. Answer the disclosure questions carefully. An inaccurate answer can delay processing or trigger a denial. After a summary page, you submit the application and move to payment. Let each page finish loading before you click forward; session timeouts and duplicate submissions are the two common ways this goes wrong. Save or screenshot the confirmation number the system gives you at the end.
Fee and Payment

If the card has already expired and you’re past the renewal window, the price jumps. Eligibility You Have to Confirm
Every renewal requires you to confirm you still meet the eligibility standards in 225 ILCS 447/35-30. IDFPR can resubmit your fingerprints to the Illinois State Police and FBI for an updated criminal history check as part of that process.2Illinois General Assembly. The following will prevent you from holding a PERC:
- Felony convictions involving bodily harm, weapons, violence, or theft, which create a presumption of unfitness for 10 years after the conviction.
- Sex offender registration, regardless of when the offense occurred.
- Court-declared incompetency, unless competency has been formally restored.
- A dishonorable military discharge.
- A prior PERC denial, suspension, or revocation within the past year.
Other criminal convictions outside those categories don’t automatically bar you. IDFPR evaluates them case by case.3Illinois General Assembly. Let the department make the call.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
Letting the PERC expire doesn’t wipe your record, but restoring it gets harder and more expensive the longer you wait. The statute draws the line at one year:2Illinois General Assembly. - Expired less than one year: you can restore the card by paying any lapsed renewal fees. No new application or fingerprinting is required.
- Expired one year or more: you have to file a new application, prove your fitness to hold the card (including fresh fingerprint processing through the Illinois State Police and FBI), and pay the restoration fee.

Any day your card is expired is a day you cannot legally work in a regulated security, detective, alarm, or locksmith position.
Confirming the Renewal Went Through
After you submit, give the system 2 to 4 business days to update your license status.4Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Security Professions You can check your standing anytime through the IDFPR License Lookup tool, which shows your expiration date and whether the card is active. IDFPR runs a paperless licensing system, so nothing arrives in the mail. Log back into the portal, download the PDF of your renewed registration, and print it. That PDF is your official proof of licensure for employer files and any field inspection.
Check the lookup tool after every renewal instead of assuming it processed. If your status hasn’t updated within a week of submission, contact IDFPR. A renewal stuck in processing still shows up as an expired card in the state’s system, and that’s what your employer’s verification check will see.
Keeping Your Contact and Name Information Current
IDFPR requires every licensee to keep a current address, email, and phone number on file.5Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Name/Address Change Request If you have an active license and a portal account, you can update mailing address, email, and phone number directly in the portal. If you don’t have a portal account, hold an inactive or non-renewed license, or live outside the United States, submit a Personal Information Change Request Form instead.
Name changes go through the Personal Information Change Request Form with supporting documentation: a marriage license, court order, divorce decree, or updated driver’s license. The statute requires you to notify the department within 30 days of a legal name change.6Illinois General Assembly.
