Illinois license plate fees start at $151 a year for a standard passenger vehicle, and climb from there depending on what you drive and what kind of plate you want. Commercial trucks pay by weight, electric vehicles pay a surcharge, and vanity plates carry their own charges on top of the base rate. The reason to get this right is not the fee itself but what happens if you let it lapse: driving on a suspended or revoked registration in Illinois is a Class A misdemeanor, the same criminal classification as a DUI.
Standard Passenger Vehicle
The $151 annual fee for a typical car breaks into three statutory pieces: a $148 base fee, a $1 surcharge for the State Police Vehicle Fund, and a $2 surcharge for the Park and Conservation Fund.1Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-806 Registration Fees Motor Vehicles of the First Division
Motorcycles and motor-driven cycles pay $41 ($38 base plus the same $3 in surcharges). Autocycles pay $71.1Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-806 Registration Fees Motor Vehicles of the First Division
Pickup trucks, small vans, and other second-division vehicles that weigh 8,000 pounds or less also pay the $151 passenger rate rather than a commercial fee. Above that weight, a different schedule kicks in.
Commercial Trucks and Heavier Vehicles
Second-division vehicles over 8,000 pounds pay an annual flat weight tax that rises with gross vehicle weight. Each tier includes a $10 registration charge:2Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-815 Registration Fees Second Division Vehicles

Register at the maximum loaded weight the truck will actually carry, not the empty weight. Registering into a lower class than you operate at exposes you to the same enforcement as no registration at all.
Electric Vehicle Surcharge
Illinois adds an annual surcharge to the standard registration fee for electric vehicles because they generate no fuel-tax revenue for road maintenance. The current surcharge was set by P.A. 101-32 in 2019, the same act that established the $148 passenger base fee. Pending legislation (SB 3566 in the 104th General Assembly) would raise the EV surcharge to $320 starting in July 2027 and add an optional per-mile road-usage charge. Until that bill passes, the exact figure on your renewal notice from the Secretary of State controls.
Vanity and Specialty Plates
Vanity plates that let you pick a custom letter-and-number combination cost $94 for the first set on a passenger vehicle or light truck, then $13 per year to renew. On a motorcycle or autocycle the initial set is $50, with the same $13 renewal. These are on top of your regular registration. Vanity plates in any military series are exempt from these surcharges.3Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-806.1 Vanity License Plates
Specialty plates tied to charities, universities, or organizational memberships have their own fees that vary by plate. The Secretary of State’s website carries the current catalog.
Title and Plate Transfer Fees
A title application is $165, separate from the annual registration fee and separate from any sales tax on a purchase.4Illinois Secretary of State. Apply for Registration and Title If you already have Illinois plates on a vehicle you’re selling or trading, you can move them to your replacement vehicle for $25. A combined title-and-transfer transaction is also available.5Illinois Secretary of State. Transferring Plates Transferring lets you keep a plate number you’re attached to, including vanity plates.
Late Fees and the Real Penalty for Driving Unregistered
Renewing more than 30 days after your registration expires adds a $20 late fee to the standard renewal cost. That $20 is the easy part.
Driving a vehicle whose registration has been cancelled, suspended, or revoked is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.6Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-702 That is the same criminal classification as a DUI or domestic battery. Drivers often assume expired plates are ticket-level. They are not.
Two situations run on different penalty tracks. If your registration was suspended because you lacked insurance, Section 3-708 governs instead of the general misdemeanor provision. If the suspension came from failing to buy a required municipal vehicle tax sticker, the violation is a business offense with a mandatory fine between $500 and $1,000.6Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-702
Repeat violations can lead to vehicle impoundment. And if you cause an accident while driving on a suspended registration, your insurer may deny the claim, which leaves you personally liable for the damages.
Insurance Verification Can Suspend Your Plates
Illinois checks your auto insurance electronically at least twice a year at random intervals through the Illinois Insurance Verification System. If the system can’t confirm coverage, the Secretary of State mails a letter with a reference number. Only your insurance company or agent can clear it, by electronically confirming your coverage through the ILIVS portal. A Driver Services facility cannot fix this for you.7Illinois Secretary of State. Secretary of State Launching Electronic Automobile Insurance Verification
If you don’t respond, your plates get suspended, and reinstatement costs $100.7Illinois Secretary of State. Secretary of State Launching Electronic Automobile Insurance Verification Because a suspended registration turns any drive into a Class A misdemeanor, ignoring these letters is one of the fastest routes from paperwork to a criminal charge.
How to Pay and Renew
Illinois offers several ways to renew:
- Online through the Secretary of State’s website using credit card, debit card, or electronic check. A processing fee applies to credit card payments; the e-check fee is currently waived. New stickers arrive in 5 to 10 business days.8Illinois Secretary of State. License Plates Renewal
- By mail to the Secretary of State’s Vehicle Services office in Springfield, with your name, address, plate number, and vehicle details (make, model, VIN) plus payment. Allow 30 days.9Illinois Secretary of State. Registration Renewal and ID Cards
- In person at any Secretary of State facility; currency exchanges and some banks also handle renewals.
- At self-service kiosks in select grocery stores, which print your sticker on the spot.
If you paid before your current sticker expired, the printed confirmation is valid proof of registration for 30 days past expiration while you wait for the new sticker.8Illinois Secretary of State. License Plates Renewal
Who Pays Less or Nothing
Vehicles owned by state, county, and municipal governments are exempt from registration fees.
Disabled veterans who meet eligibility requirements can receive complimentary vehicle registration through the Secretary of State. The exemption is in the Vehicle Code and requires documentation of a qualifying service-connected disability. Active-duty military personnel stationed outside Illinois may receive extensions on renewal deadlines and should contact the Secretary of State’s office before their plates expire.
Farm vehicles with permanently mounted equipment such as corn shellers, hay presses, or feed mixers pay $13 for a two-year registration, provided the vehicle is used solely to transport that equipment.10Illinois General Assembly. 625 ILCS 5/3-809 Farm Machinery Exempt Vehicles and Fertilizer Spreaders Registration Fee The machinery has to be permanently attached and the vehicle used only for hauling it. A truck that doubles as a personal vehicle doesn’t qualify.
