Illinois REAL ID Checklist: Identity, SSN, and Residency Proofs

An Illinois REAL ID checklist comes down to four things you bring to a Secretary of State facility: one document proving your identity and legal status, one showing your Social Security number, two showing your current Illinois street address, and any name-change paperwork that connects the name on your identity document to the name you use now. Every item must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies, phone screenshots, and laminated documents will be turned away at the counter.1Illinois Secretary of State. Identity, Date of Birth, and Legal Status

Bring one document that establishes who you are, when you were born, and that you are lawfully in the United States. The common choices:

  • A certified birth certificate filed with a state vital statistics office. Hospital souvenir certificates do not count.
  • A U.S. passport or passport card, current or expired less than two years.
  • A Certificate of Naturalization (N-550 or N-570) or Certificate of Citizenship (N-560 or N-561).
  • A Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), an Employment Authorization Card (I-766), or an Arrival/Departure Record (I-94) paired with a valid passport will work.1Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

Proof of Your Social Security Number

One document showing your full nine-digit Social Security number. Your Social Security card is the simplest option. A W-2 or a pay stub displaying your name and full number is also accepted.3Illinois Secretary of State. REAL ID Document Checklist

If you already hold an Illinois driver’s license or state ID and your number is on file, you may not be asked for a physical document.3Illinois Secretary of State. Two Proofs of Illinois Residency

This category stalls the most applications. You need two separate documents showing your current Illinois street address, and both must display the same address. Acceptable items include:4Illinois General Assembly. 92 Illinois Administrative Code 1030 Appendix D

  • A utility bill for electric, water, gas, refuse, cable, or phone (landline or cell) issued within 90 days.
  • A bank statement dated within 90 days.
  • A mortgage, deed, or lease agreement.
  • A voter registration card.
  • Official mail from a federal, state, county, or city agency, such as a homestead exemption receipt, a jury duty notice within 90 days, or a Social Security statement.

One shortcut worth knowing: a document you’re already using for another category can double as a residency proof if it shows your full name and street address.1Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

A PO box will not satisfy the residency requirement. Federal regulations require a street address for REAL ID purposes.5eCFR. 6 CFR Part 37 – Real ID Driver’s Licenses and Identification Cards

Name Change Documents

If the name on your identity document does not match the name you use now, bring every document in the chain connecting the two. One name change from marriage means one certified marriage certificate. Two marriages and a divorce means all three: both certified marriage certificates and the certified dissolution of marriage order.6Illinois Secretary of State. Corrected Driver’s License/ID Card Checklist Court-ordered name changes and adoption records also work, as long as each one shows the legal name before and after the change.

Start on these early. A certified copy of a marriage certificate from another state can take weeks to arrive, and a decades-old change is often the missing link that keeps someone from finishing the application.

Rules That Apply to Every Document

Everything you bring must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies, printouts of digital images, and laminated documents will not be accepted.1Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card At the counter, a technician checks each document for authenticity and verifies that names, dates, and addresses are consistent across the stack. A mismatch as small as a middle name spelled out on one document and abbreviated on another can result in a rejection. If any piece of paper in your stack shows a different version of your name, add the certified document that explains why.

What Happens After You Apply

You will not walk out with a permanent card. You receive a temporary paper document valid for up to 90 days that serves as both a driver’s license and proof of identification while you wait.7Legal Information Institute. Illinois Administrative Code 92-1030.89 – Temporary Driver’s Licenses and Temporary Instruction Permits The permanent card is printed centrally and mailed to your address on file within 15 business days.8Illinois Secretary of State. Driver’s License and State ID Card Information If three weeks pass with no card, call the Secretary of State’s office rather than waiting for the temporary to expire.

Appointments are available online and cut the wait time. Walk-ins are accepted, especially at larger facilities where lines tend to run long.9Illinois Secretary of State. Appointments

Do You Actually Need One?

A REAL ID is one option among several the TSA accepts. A U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. military ID, a DHS trusted traveler card such as Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI, and a permanent resident card all work at the checkpoint without a fee or additional screening.10Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Children under 18 do not need to show ID when traveling with an adult. If you already carry a valid passport, gathering the checklist above may not be worth the trip.
