To renew Illinois SNAP benefits, complete the Illinois SNAP redetermination form (IL444-1893) with your current household, income, and expense details and return it to the Illinois Department of Human Services by the deadline printed on the notice IDHS mails you. Submit it through the ABE portal, by mail, by fax, or in person at your Family Community Resource Center. Getting the form back on time โ with the right documents attached โ is what keeps your benefits from closing at the end of your certification period.
When the Form Arrives and When It’s Due
IDHS generates Form IL444-1893, the Cash, Medical and SNAP Redetermination Application Notice, automatically and mails a paper copy on the first day of the month before your final certification month.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Reinstatement of Six-Month Redetermination Process and EZ REDE for SNAP That gives you roughly 30 days to complete it. The deadline itself is printed on the notice, so check the top of the form the moment it arrives.
Since October 22, 2025, IDHS has placed most SNAP households on a six-month certification cycle, so redetermination now comes around twice a year rather than annually.1Illinois Department of Human Services. Reinstatement of Six-Month Redetermination Process and EZ REDE for SNAP One boundary worth knowing: households in which every adult is 60 or older or is disabled, and no one has earned income, may qualify for the Elderly and Disabled Simplified Redetermination Project (EDSRP), which uses a 24-month certification with a simplified form and no interview.2Illinois Department of Human Services. Elderly and/or Disabled Simplified Redetermination Demonstration Project If that’s your household, the form you receive will look different from the standard IL444-1893.
Documents to Gather Before You Fill It Out
Having verification in hand before you start prevents the back-and-forth that stalls a renewal. IDHS verifies one month of income from each source, and you can use any 30-day period from the date your redetermination form was mailed through the date IDHS decides, provided that income is representative of what you expect going forward.3Illinois Department of Human Services. - Recent pay stubs covering at least 30 days for each working household member. If you’re self-employed, records of business income and expenses.
- Proof of unearned income such as unemployment, pensions, or child support. IDHS can verify Social Security amounts electronically, so a benefit letter is generally unnecessary unless the system’s figure doesn’t match what you receive.3Illinois Department of Human Services. - A current rent receipt, lease, or mortgage statement.
- Utility bills. Illinois applies a Standard Utility Allowance rather than actual amounts: $546 per month if you pay heating or cooling costs directly, $457 if you pay some utilities but not heating, and $78 if you pay only one utility.4Illinois Department of Human Services. - Receipts for child care or care of a disabled adult household member.
- For any household member age 60 or older or disabled, documentation of out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 per month. IDHS applies a Standard Medical Deduction of $185 per month ($485 for group home residents); if actual costs are higher, you can claim the actual amount instead.5Illinois Department of Human Services. - Documentation of any births, deaths, or people who moved in or out since your last approval.
Filling Out the Form
You can work from the paper copy IDHS mailed you or complete the redetermination online by logging into the Application for Benefits Eligibility (ABE) system at abe.illinois.gov and selecting Manage My Case.6Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. ABE Benefits
In the household section, list every person living in your home, along with their Social Security numbers and their relationship to you. In the income section, enter gross monthly amounts โ the figure before taxes and deductions come out, not take-home pay. Flag any job change, new income source, or lost income since your last approval. The form then walks through shelter costs, utility arrangements, dependent care, and, if applicable, medical expenses for elderly or disabled members.
Before you sign, confirm your phone number and mailing address. If a caseworker needs to reach you for an interview or a missing document and can’t, the case will close on schedule and your benefits will lapse.
How to Submit the Form
Online Through ABE
The fastest route is uploading through ABE. Log in at abe.illinois.gov, open Manage My Case, and use Upload Documents. The system accepts up to 10 documents at a time, 2 MB each, and you should label each file with the correct category so your caseworker isn’t hunting through mislabeled attachments.7Illinois Department of Human Services. Uploading Documents You get an on-screen confirmation of receipt.
By Mail
Send the completed form and copies (never originals) of your verification to the IDHS Central Scan Unit, P.O. Box 19138, Springfield, IL 62763-9138.8Illinois Department of Human Services. IDHS Central Office Staff Information Keep a photocopy of everything and consider certified mail or a certificate of mailing. Proof of mailing is the only thing that protects you if delivery is disputed later.
By Fax or In Person
IDHS also accepts faxes and in-person drop-off at your local Family Community Resource Center. Fax numbers vary by office, so call your assigned FCRC for the right one.
Whichever method you choose, aim to submit early in your final certification month. Missing the deadline printed on the notice triggers automatic closure.
The Redetermination Interview
Interviews are required at your first redetermination and at every other one after that, so if you were interviewed last time, you can usually expect to skip it this cycle, and vice versa.1Illinois Department of Human Services. After You Submit
IDHS processes redeterminations within 30 days of receiving a completed form.11Illinois Department of Human Services. Appeals and Fair Hearings For Those Receiving Cash, SNAP, or Medical Assistance A Notice of Decision comes by mail telling you whether benefits are renewed, adjusted, or denied. If renewed, the notice shows your new monthly allotment and the dates of your next certification period.
If you missed the deadline and your case has closed, act quickly. Turning in the redetermination form after the deadline can reopen the case without a fresh application, but wait much past 90 days and you’ll need to reapply from scratch. The sooner the paperwork lands, the shorter any gap.
Appealing a Denial or Reduction
If the redetermination ends in a denial, a lower allotment than expected, or a case closure, you have 90 days from the date on the decision notice to request a fair hearing. Grounds include denial, benefit reduction, case closure, or a delay by IDHS in making a decision.11Illinois Department of Human Services.
