Illinois gives every individual income tax filer an automatic six-month extension to file, moving the deadline from April 15 to October 15 without any form, request, or phone call. The Illinois tax filing extension only covers the paperwork, though. If you owe money, the payment is still due April 15, and interest and penalties start the next day.1Legal Information Institute. What the Automatic Extension Does and Does Not Cover
Under Illinois administrative rules, individual filers get six extra months beyond the original April 15 due date. Corporations get seven. There is nothing to submit to claim it. If you file on a calendar year, your extended deadline is October 15.1Legal Information Institute. If withholding, estimated payments, and credits already cover your full liability, you have nothing more to do by April. You do not need Form IL-505-I. You do not need to notify the state. The extension is already yours.2Illinois Department of Revenue. Form IL-505-I Automatic Extension Payment
Here is the piece that catches people out. More time to file is not more time to pay. If you expect to owe tax, you must send the payment by April 15 even though your return itself will not be ready until later.3Illinois Department of Revenue. Due Date/Extension to File Income Tax Return
Estimating and Paying What You Owe by April 15
If you think a balance will be due, work out a close estimate before April 15. Illinois uses a flat individual income tax rate of 4.95 percent of net income.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Income Tax Rates Total your expected income for the year, apply the rate, then subtract Illinois tax your employer withheld, any estimated payments you already made, and credits you qualify for such as the Property Tax Credit or the K-12 Education Expense Credit. What is left is the amount to send with your extension payment.
You will reconcile the real numbers on your IL-1040 when you file. Overpay and you get a refund; underpay and you owe the difference plus possible penalties, so a conservative estimate tends to be the safer side to err on.

What It Costs if You Pay Late or File Late
Illinois charges separate penalties for paying late and for filing late. The two can stack.
Late Payment
If your payment lands after April 15, how late matters. Payments 1 to 30 days late carry a 2 percent penalty on the amount due. Past 30 days, the penalty rises to 10 percent.8Illinois Department of Revenue. Pub-103, Penalties and Interest for Illinois Taxes That jump is large enough that if you have already missed April 15, getting the money in before day 31 is worth prioritizing.
Late Filing
Miss the extended October 15 deadline and the late-filing penalty applies in two tiers. The first tier is the lesser of $250 or 2 percent of the tax due after timely payments. If you still have not filed within 30 days of receiving a nonfiling notice, the second tier applies: the greater of $250 or 2 percent of the total tax shown on the return, capped at $5,000. That second-tier penalty can apply even if you owe no tax.8Illinois Department of Revenue. Pub-103, Penalties and Interest for Illinois Taxes
Interest
Unpaid tax also accrues simple interest, calculated daily. The rate is tied to the federal underpayment rate and adjusts every six months, on January 1 and July 1. For the period from January 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, the annual rate is 7 percent.9Illinois Department of Revenue. Interest Rates Interest runs from the original April 15 due date until the balance is paid, extension or not.
If You Cannot Pay the Full Amount by April 15
Paying what you can and filing on time still beats doing nothing. The late-filing penalty is separate from the late-payment penalty, so at a minimum you want to avoid stacking both.
Illinois offers installment payment plans for taxpayers who cannot pay the full balance at once. You must be current on all required returns to qualify. The easiest path is MyTax Illinois, which offers a pre-approved payment plan option. If the standard terms do not fit, you can request a custom arrangement through MyTax or by mailing Form CPP-1. Balances over $15,000 including penalties and interest require additional financial documentation on Form EG-13-I.10Illinois Department of Revenue. Payment Plan
Asking for Penalty Relief
Illinois can waive late-filing and late-payment penalties if you can show reasonable cause. The department decides case by case, and the central question is whether you made a good-faith effort to determine your correct liability and to file and pay on time.11Legal Information Institute. Illinois Admin Code tit 86, 700.400 – Reasonable Cause
Serious illness or a death in the immediate family, a natural disaster that destroyed records, or a system failure that blocked an electronic filing can qualify. Not knowing the deadline or making a math error generally does not. If you have a valid reason, respond in writing to any penalty notice, explain the circumstances, and attach documentation.
If You Live Outside the United States
The IRS grants U.S. citizens and residents living outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15 an automatic two-month federal filing extension to June 15. No special form is needed, but you must attach a statement with your federal return explaining that you were abroad on the original deadline.12Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad
For Illinois, this federal rule changes little, because the state already gives everyone six months to file. Your IL-1040 is not due until October 15 wherever you live.1Legal Information Institute. Illinois Admin Code tit 86, 100.5020 – Extensions of Time for Filing Returns: All Taxpayers (IITA Section 505) The payment rule is the same, too. Any Illinois tax you owe is due April 15, and interest starts the next day. If pinning down an exact figure from abroad is hard, estimate on the high side and take any excess back as a refund when you file.
