Illinois’s 17 Congressional Districts: Address Lookup and Reps

Illinois has 17 congressional districts, each sending one member to the U.S. House of Representatives. The state dropped from 18 seats to 17 after the 2020 Census, and the current boundaries will stay in place until new maps are drawn after the 2030 count. Each district covers roughly 754,000 people.

Find Your District by Address

A zip code alone won’t do it. District lines cut through neighborhoods and sometimes down individual streets, so you need your full street address for an accurate answer.

Two free tools return a reliable result:

  • The Illinois State Board of Elections district locator takes your address and returns your congressional district along with your state legislative districts. If the result looks off, the Board suggests confirming with your local election authority.1Illinois State Board of Elections. Find My Elected Officials
  • The House’s own Find Your Representative page takes a zip code first and asks for your street address if that zip spans more than one district.2House of Representatives. Find Your Representative

Your county clerk’s office can also tell you. In most Illinois counties the clerk serves as the election authority and maintains voter registration records that include your congressional district. If you’re already registered, your voter registration card lists the district number.

Why Illinois Has 17 Seats

House seats are divided among the states by population after each ten-year census.3Constitution Annotated. Article I Section 2 The President sends Congress a report after each count showing how many seats each state gets, and the Clerk of the House notifies every state of its new total.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 2 USC 2a – Reapportionment of Representatives

Illinois recorded a population of about 12.8 million in 2020, down 0.1 percent from a decade earlier. The national population grew 7.4 percent over the same stretch, to 331.4 million.5United States Census Bureau. Illinois: 2020 Census Faster-growing states picked up seats; Illinois lost one. The average congressional district nationwide now holds about 761,169 people.6Congress.gov. Apportionment and Redistricting Process for the U.S. House of Representatives

The current 17-district map will govern elections through the end of the decade. New boundaries drawn after the 2030 Census will take effect for the elections that follow.

What Your Representative Can Do for You

A House member’s work splits into two tracks. In Washington, they vote on federal legislation and budgets and serve on committees that oversee specific policy areas. Every member sits on at least one standing committee, and committee assignments shape what a representative can realistically influence.7House of Representatives. Committees

Back home, every congressional office handles casework for residents tangled up with federal agencies. Stalled IRS refunds, delayed passport applications, Social Security payment errors, and immigration processing backlogs are the standard list. Staff will contact the agency, request a status update, and follow up if nothing moves in about 30 days. You’ll need to sign a privacy release before they can pull your case details. Two limits worth knowing: the office can only inquire with federal agencies, not state or local ones, and it can press for a response but can’t force a particular outcome.

The Next Congressional Election

All 17 Illinois House seats are on the ballot Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Federal law sets Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Each party holds a primary earlier in the year to pick its nominee.
