The Indiana BMV driving test is a roughly 20-minute on-road exam that every learner’s permit holder must pass to earn a probationary driver’s license. An examiner rides with you on public roads near the branch, scores your handling of everyday maneuvers on a point system, and gives you a verbal result the moment you park. You pass by staying under 11 points and avoiding any automatic-failure error.
Who Can Take the Test
Two things gate the appointment: your age and how long you’ve held your permit. With a state-approved driver education course completed, you can test at 16 years and 90 days old. Without driver’s ed, the minimum age is 16 years and 270 days.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Probationary Driver’s License Either way, you must have held your Indiana learner’s permit for at least 180 days before testing.
Indiana also requires 50 hours of supervised practice driving during the permit period, with at least 10 of those hours at night.2Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License You log those hours on State Form 54706 and bring the completed log to your appointment. If you’re under 18 and not enrolled in driver education, your supervising driver must be at least 25 and related to you by blood, marriage, or legal status, or a spouse who is at least 21.3Indiana General Assembly. Scheduling Your Appointment
The driving skills test is by appointment only. Book through your myBMV account online or by calling the BMV contact center at 888-692-6841. The general branch appointment scheduler will not work for this; you have to use the myBMV portal specifically.4Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Some applicants can’t schedule online and need to call instead, including foreign nationals without a Social Security number and anyone whose permit expired or was renewed within the previous six months.5Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driving (Skills) Test Busy branches fill fast, so booking early in the window gives you the best selection of slots.
Testing Through a Driver Training School
You don’t have to test at a BMV branch. If you finished driver training with an Indiana-licensed provider that participates in the BMV’s skills test administration program, you can take the road test directly through that school once you’re 16 years and 90 days old.5Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driving (Skills) Test Not every school participates. You’ll need to test at a branch if your permit has expired, your school doesn’t offer the option, or you didn’t complete the training program.
What to Bring on Test Day
Missing paperwork sends you home before the test starts. Bring:
- Your valid, unexpired learner’s permit.
- The completed Log of Supervised Driving Practice (State Form 54706), signed by a parent or guardian if you’re under 18, with the supervising driver’s license information filled in. Incomplete hour totals or missing signatures mean automatic denial before you turn the key.6Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. State Form 54706 – Log of Supervised Driving Practice
- Proof of insurance for the vehicle you’ll drive.
- Valid registration matching that vehicle.
Vehicle Inspection
Before you drive, the examiner walks around the vehicle. If it fails inspection, the test is cancelled and you reschedule.5Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driving (Skills) Test The vehicle needs:
- Working headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
- A functioning rearview mirror and properly adjusted side mirrors.
- A passenger door that opens from both inside and outside, so the examiner can get in and out safely.
- A clean, uncracked windshield and working wipers.
- Tires with adequate tread and proper inflation.
A deployed airbag or a dash lit with warning lights will end the appointment on the spot. If your car has issues, borrow one that doesn’t. Examiners have no discretion here.
What the Examiner Scores
Once you’re on the road, the examiner scores how you handle standard driving situations. Expect to be evaluated on:
- Parallel parking within a designated space without hitting the curb or markers. This is where examiners see the most failures.
- Backing straight for roughly 50 feet, using your mirrors and turning to look behind you.
- Intersection navigation, meaning complete stops, correct yielding, and good gap judgment.
- Lane changes with a physical head turn to check blind spots. Mirrors alone aren’t enough.
- Speed control, including smooth acceleration and braking and adjusting for conditions.
- Signaling before every turn and lane change at a reasonable time beforehand. The old 200-foot rule was repealed in 2022.7Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 9-21-8-25 Repealed
The examiner also watches for the habits that show awareness: regular mirror checks, safe following distance, and correct responses to signs and signals. Keep both hands on the wheel at nine-and-three or ten-and-two throughout.
Scoring and Automatic Failures
The test uses a point system. Each error adds points, and 11 or more means you fail. Small errors like a slightly wide turn cost a point or two.
Certain mistakes end the test immediately no matter what your point total is: running a red light or stop sign, speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, causing a collision, failing to yield to pedestrians or emergency vehicles, turning from the wrong lane, and not wearing a seat belt. The examiner can also end the test early if they have to intervene for safety. There’s no partial credit when a test ends this way. You reschedule and start over.
Immediately After the Test
The examiner tells you the result verbally as soon as the test ends.
If You Pass
You’ll take a signed score sheet inside for license processing. The standard license fee for applicants under 75 is $17.50.8Indiana Code. Indiana Code 9-24-3 – Operator’s License The BMV accepts cash, checks, and credit or debit cards; card payments carry a fee of $0.40 plus 2.06% of the transaction.9Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Fees and Taxes You’ll leave with a temporary paper license valid for 30 days while your permanent card is manufactured and mailed to your address on file.
If You Fail
You have to wait at least seven days before another attempt.10Indiana State Government. Knowledge Exam Use that week to drill the specific maneuvers you missed. The examiner’s verbal feedback right after the test is the clearest guide you’ll get to what went wrong. Reschedule through myBMV the same way you booked the first appointment.
What the Probationary License Restricts
Passing the test earns you a probationary license, not an unrestricted one. For the first 180 days, you can’t drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and you can’t carry passengers other than immediate family unless a licensed driver aged 25 or older is in the front seat.11Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 9-24-11-3.5 Operation of Vehicle During Probationary Period After that first 180 days and until you turn 18, a lighter curfew still applies: no driving after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, none between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and none before 5 a.m. on weekday mornings. Exceptions cover driving to or from work, school-sanctioned activities, and religious events, and the curfew doesn’t apply with a licensed driver 25 or older (or a spouse 21 or older) in the front passenger seat.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Probationary Driver’s License
Probationary drivers also can’t use any mobile device while driving, including hands-free. The ban applies to all Indiana drivers under 21, and violating it can bring a fine of up to $500. Texting while driving is separately illegal at any age.
