To get a REAL ID at an Indiana BMV branch, you need to bring documents from four categories: one proof of identity and lawful presence, one proof of your Social Security number, two proofs of Indiana residency, and, if your legal name has changed, paperwork connecting your birth name to your current name. Every Indiana REAL ID document must be an original or a certified copy from the issuing agency, and you have to appear in person the first time you upgrade.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so a compliant card (marked with a black star cutout in the upper-right corner) is now required to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings unless you carry an alternative like a valid passport.2Transportation Security Administration. Proof of Identity and Lawful Status
Bring one of the following:3Legal Information Institute. Indiana Administrative Code 140 IAC 7-1.1-3 – License, Permit, and Identification Card Documentation Requirements
- An unexpired U.S. passport or passport card.
- A certified birth certificate issued by a state or local vital statistics office. Hospital souvenir certificates and commemorative copies do not count.
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad on Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545.
- An unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) that can be verified through federal databases.
Photocopies, notarized copies, and anything that looks altered will be rejected, and that rule applies to every category below, not just this one.3Legal Information Institute. Indiana Administrative Code 140 IAC 7-1.1-3 – License, Permit, and Identification Card Documentation Requirements
Proof of Your Social Security Number
You need one document showing your full nine-digit number. Any of these works:4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions
- Your original Social Security card.
- A W-2 form.
- An SSA-1099 or non-SSA-1099 form.
- A pay stub that shows your name and full Social Security number.
The number must be complete and readable. Anything partially redacted will not be accepted. A prior-year tax document is fine so long as it has not been modified.
Two Proofs of Indiana Residency
This is the only category where you bring two documents instead of one. Both must show your name and a physical Indiana street address. A P.O. box does not qualify.5Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Documentation Checklist
Some documents are only accepted if dated within 60 days of your branch visit:
- Utility, credit card, doctor, or hospital bills.
- Bank statements or bank transaction receipts.
- Pre-printed pay stubs.
- Indiana Department of Child Services support check stubs, Medicaid, or Medicare benefit statements.
- First-class mail from any federal or state court or agency.
Others have no date limit:
- An Indiana voter registration card.
- A mortgage, loan contract, lease, or rental agreement.
You can combine the two lists. A lease plus a recent utility bill, for example, satisfies both slots.5Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Documentation Checklist
If You Cannot Produce Two Documents in Your Own Name
Indiana provides a Residency Affidavit (State Form 50879) for situations like living with a relative or friend, being homeless, residing in a mobile home, being an incapacitated person in the care of a guardian, or being active-duty military.6Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Indiana Residency Affidavit
Section One is filled out by you. Section Two is filled out by a second person (the affiant) confirming where you live. If you are living with a friend or relative, that affiant needs to come to the branch with their own valid Indiana license or ID, one identity document, and two residency documents of their own. Both of you sign under penalty of perjury.6Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Indiana Residency Affidavit Download the form ahead of time so the affiant knows what to bring.
Documents for a Legal Name Change
If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, you need paperwork bridging the two. The BMV accepts:1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview
- A marriage license.
- A divorce decree showing your previous and new name. If you are returning to a maiden name, the decree by itself is enough.
- A court order approving a legal name change.
- An original or certified amended birth certificate reflecting the change.
All of these must be government-issued.5Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Documentation Checklist If your name has changed more than once, you need every link in the chain. Someone born Smith who married to Jones, divorced back to Smith, then married to Davis needs the first marriage license, the divorce decree, and the second marriage license. Any missing link stops the transaction.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview
Update Social Security Before You Go
This is the step people miss. The name and date of birth on your BMV documents have to match what the Social Security Administration has on file. If you recently changed your name and have not yet updated your SSA record, the system will flag the mismatch at the branch and you will leave without a card.
To update the record, file Form SS-5 with the SSA. You will need identity documents in both your old and new names, along with the underlying evidence of the change (the same marriage license, divorce decree, or court order you plan to take to the BMV). If the name change happened more than two years ago, the SSA may ask for more identity proof. A replacement card issued for a name change does not count against the federal limit of three replacements per year or ten per lifetime.7Social Security Administration. Application for a Social Security Card
Wait until you have the corrected card or confirmation that the record is updated, then go to the BMV.
A Few Things to Know Before Your Visit
You have to appear in person the first time you get a REAL ID credential. There is no online or kiosk option for the initial upgrade.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview Every Indiana branch takes walk-ins, and you can also book an appointment online to shorten your wait.8Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Indiana BMV Branch Appointment Scheduling Each person needing service must have their own appointment or check in separately.
The agent scans your documents and hands them back at the counter. You will walk out with a temporary paper permit valid for 30 days while the permanent card is printed and mailed.9Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. New Indiana Residents That paper permit is not REAL ID-compliant at TSA checkpoints, so if you have travel booked before the permanent card arrives, plan on using a passport or another acceptable federal ID.
Once your record shows REAL ID compliance, you will not have to resubmit these documents at future renewals unless you hold temporary or permanent resident status.1Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview
