Indiana Department of Revenue Address: PO Boxes by Tax Type

The mailing address for the Indiana Department of Revenue depends on what you are sending. The DOR uses more than two dozen P.O. Boxes in Indianapolis, each tied to a specific tax type, form, and whether payment is enclosed. Legal correspondence goes to a separate street address. Sending a return or payment to the wrong box can delay processing by weeks and may trigger late-payment penalties.

Individual Income Tax

Individual income tax mail splits by whether payment is enclosed. This is the most common source of misrouted mail.

Legal Correspondence, Protests, and Appeals

Mail that is not a return or payment, such as legal notices, formal protests, appeals, or general information requests, goes to the DOR’s administrative street address:

Indiana Department of Revenue
Attn: Legal Division
100 N Senate Avenue, MS 102
Indianapolis, IN 462043Indiana Department of Revenue. Contact Us

Do not send tax returns or payments to the Senate Avenue address. They sit in an internal rerouting queue before reaching the correct P.O. Box, and a deadline can pass in the meantime. Use a P.O. Box for any transactional filing and the street address only for legal or administrative matters.

Mailing Deadlines and Postmarks

Indiana uses the postmark date to decide whether a mailed return or payment is timely. A change in how the U.S. Postal Service applies postmarks means the automated postmark may reflect the date of first processing rather than the day you dropped the envelope in a box, which could be several days later.

If you are mailing close to a deadline, the DOR recommends three protections. Take the envelope to a USPS retail counter and ask for a manual local postmark. If that is not possible, mail the item at least one week before the deadline. Consider Certified Mail so you have a dated receipt as proof.4IN.gov. USPS Postmark Change
