If you were born after December 31, 1986, Indiana hunter education requirements apply to you: you must complete an approved course before the state will sell you a standard hunting license. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources runs the program, and you can satisfy it in a classroom at no cost or online for a provider fee. Certificates from any other U.S. state, territory, or Canadian province are accepted under reciprocity.1Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 14-22-11-5 – Hunter Education
Who the Requirement Applies To
The December 31, 1986 cutoff is the whole test. Born on or before that date, no course required. Born after it, you need a certificate to buy anything other than an apprentice license. The statute makes no distinction between residents and nonresidents, and it does not matter whether you plan to hunt public ground or private property.1Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 14-22-11-5 – Hunter Education
Your hunter education number is entered into the state licensing system at the moment of purchase. Without that number on file, the system will not issue a standard license to anyone born after the cutoff.2Indiana Department of Natural Resources. DNR: Fish and Wildlife: License Fees
If you already completed a hunter education course somewhere else, you do not need to repeat it in Indiana. The state honors certificates issued through the reciprocity framework maintained by the International Hunter Education Association, which covers every U.S. state and territory and the Canadian provinces. Keep your original certificate or card accessible so you can supply the number when you buy a license.
Classroom or Online: Choosing a Format
Both formats produce the same certificate and both satisfy the law. The difference is cost, pace, and whether you want hands-on instruction.
Classroom
Classroom courses are taught by certified volunteer instructors and conservation officers, usually across one or two days totaling roughly eight to ten hours of instruction. You handle firearms under direct supervision and get real-time feedback from someone who hunts. The Indiana DNR offers these courses free of charge.3Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Online
The self-paced online course is open to anyone age 12 or older. Approved providers walk you through the material with interactive modules, videos, and practice quizzes. You work on your own schedule and finish when you finish. The fee is set by the provider and varies.4IN.gov. How Do I Register for a Hunter Education Class?
What the Course Covers
Indiana’s curriculum is built around hunter safety, conservation, and sportsmanship.5Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 14-22-35-1 – Establishment of Course of Instruction In practice that breaks down into several areas you will be tested on:
- Firearm and ammunition safety, including safe handling, carrying positions, loading and unloading, muzzle control, and crossing obstacles like fences without creating a hazard.
- Wildlife identification, including distinguishing legal game from protected species, bag limits, and the habitats you are hunting in.
- Conservation and ethics, including why wildlife management matters and what responsible behavior looks like in the field.
- Survival and first aid, including what to do if you get lost and basic treatment for hypothermia, heat exposure, and wounds.
- Indiana-specific hunting laws, license requirements, trespass law, and the consequences of violations.
You have to pass a final examination to earn the certificate. Online learners must complete every module before they can attempt the exam.
How to Register
Registration starts on the Indiana DNR’s outdoor education page or through an authorized third-party online provider. Have your legal name, date of birth, and residential address ready. Indiana law requires applicants to provide the last four digits of their Social Security number for all hunting licenses, and that number links your education record to the state licensing system.6Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 14-22-11-3 – License Issuance Form Electronic Affirmation
Enter your information exactly as it appears on your legal ID. Your certificate is tied to that data for life, and any mismatch when you later try to buy a license can cause problems that are a nuisance to clean up.
What You Get When You Pass
Pass the final exam through an approved online provider and you can print a temporary hunter education certificate immediately. That temporary document is valid for 60 days and lets you buy a hunting license right away. Your completion data is transmitted to the DNR, and a permanent card follows.
The certificate never expires. It is valid for life in Indiana and recognized in every other state through International Hunter Education Association reciprocity.
Once you have your hunter education number, you can buy licenses through Indiana’s online portal at GoOutdoorsIN.com, at license retailers around the state, or by mail through the DNR. A resident small game hunting license runs $20 for the 2026 season, and a resident youth hunt/trap license for hunters 17 and younger is $12.7Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Hunting Before You’re Certified: The Apprentice License
If you want to get into the field before you finish the course, Indiana offers an apprentice hunting license. There is no minimum age, and the apprentice license carries the same hunting privileges as a standard license with one condition: you must be accompanied at all times by a licensed adult who is at least 18 years old.8Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 14-22-12-1.7 – Apprentice Hunting License
The adult has to stay close enough to monitor you and communicate with you throughout the hunt, and they cannot accompany more than two apprentice hunters at a time. You can purchase a maximum of three apprentice licenses over your lifetime, so this is a short-term bridge to the hunter education course, not a long-term substitute for it.2Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Replacing a Lost Certificate
If you misplace your physical card, the DNR keeps a searchable database of every completion record. Look yourself up through the Outdoor Education Certificate Search page using your name and date of birth, and you can retrieve the number itself without ordering anything.9Indiana Department of Natural Resources. For a physical replacement, the DNR directs hunters to ilostmycard.com, the third-party service that handles card reprints for Indiana and many other states. A credit card is required for the fee. Since the number is what the licensing system actually asks for, the online lookup is usually the fastest way to get back in the field.
