An Indiana speeding ticket typically costs between $150 and $640. That total has two parts: a base fine set by the county where you were stopped, which scales with how far over the limit you were going, and a fixed $139 in court costs that every driver pays. School zones, work zones, and repeat offenses push the number higher, and the real cost of a speeding ticket in Indiana usually extends past the citation itself once points and insurance are factored in.
The $139 in Court Costs Every Driver Pays
Indiana law requires the clerk of court to collect a standard set of fees from every driver found responsible for an infraction. The Indiana Trial Court Fee Manual puts the total at $139, and it applies uniformly in all 92 counties.1Indiana Courts. The Base Fine Depends on Your County
The other component is the base fine, which a judge sets or a county fee schedule dictates based on how far over the limit you were traveling. Indiana law caps the fine at $500 for a Class C infraction, which is the category covering most speeding violations.4Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 34 Civil Law and Procedure 34-28-5-4 In practice, base fines for 10 or 15 mph over the limit rarely come near the ceiling.
Each county sets its own schedule within those limits. A county with heavy interstate traffic may set steeper fines for moderate speeding than a rural county with less traffic enforcement. Court costs are the same everywhere, but the base fine can shift your total by $50 or more depending on where the stop happened. There is no single statewide chart that tells you exactly what your ticket will cost based on speed alone. To find your specific amount, you’ll need to look it up through the courts.
School Zone and Work Zone Speeding Costs More
Speeding in certain protected areas moves the violation from a Class C infraction to a Class B infraction, which raises the fine ceiling to $1,000. The $139 in court costs still applies on top.
School Zones
Exceeding a posted school zone speed limit while children are present is a Class B infraction.5Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 9 Motor Vehicles 9-21-5-6 School zone limits can drop to 20 mph, so even ordinary driving speeds can produce a large gap between your speed and the posted limit. Most deferral programs exclude school zone tickets, which cuts off the main way to keep the violation off your record.
Highway Work Zones
Work zone speeding carries mandatory minimum fines that escalate with repeat offenses:6Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 9 Motor Vehicles 9-21-5-11
- First offense: at least $300
- Second offense within three years: at least $500
- Third offense within three years: $1,000
Those are floors. A judge can go higher. Reckless or aggressive driving through a work zone can result in fines up to $5,000, and injuring or killing a highway worker can bring a $10,000 fine plus up to six years of imprisonment.7Indiana Department of Transportation. Work Zone Safety Work zone tickets are also typically excluded from deferral programs.
Points and Insurance: The Cost You Don’t See on the Ticket
Every speeding conviction adds points to your Indiana driving record. The BMV assigns them based on how far over the limit you were traveling:8Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driver Record Points
- 1–15 mph over: 2 points
- 16–25 mph over: 4 points
- 26 or more mph over: 6 points9Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Indiana Drivers Manual Chapter 5
Points stay active for two years from the conviction date. Accumulate 20 or more and the BMV begins suspending your license on a sliding scale, starting at one month and rising to a full year at 42 points. Between 14 and 18 points triggers a written warning. Once every three years, an approved defensive driving course earns a four-point credit.
The insurance side is where a single ticket often costs more than the fine. Indiana insurers pull driving records at renewal, and a speeding conviction can raise your annual premium by several hundred dollars for three to five years. That long tail is worth weighing against options like a deferral program, which can keep the conviction off your record entirely.
When Speeding Becomes a Criminal Charge
Most speeding tickets stay civil, but there is a line. Indiana defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle at an unreasonably high speed that endangers the safety or property of others. No hard statutory speed threshold automatically triggers the charge. In practice, prosecutors rarely pursue it for speeding alone unless the driver was going roughly 26 mph or more over the limit. At that point the charge becomes a Class C misdemeanor, carrying potential jail time up to 60 days, a fine up to $500, and a criminal record.
Finding the Exact Cost of Your Ticket
Indiana’s courts run a public portal called MyCase at mycase.in.gov.10Indiana Judicial Branch. Searching MyCase It’s the public-facing side of the Odyssey Case Management System that courts use statewide.11Indiana Judicial Branch. Odyssey Case Management System Search by your name and date of birth, or by the ticket number on your citation. The ticket number is faster.
The case detail page shows the total due, combining the base fine and all court costs into one figure. A “Make a payment” button appears if the court has enabled online payment, though not every Indiana court has.
Two caveats. The MyCase balance may not reflect recent payments or accrued interest, so for an exact figure call the clerk of court directly. And if your ticket was issued recently, give the officer’s agency a few business days to transmit the record before assuming it’s missing.
Ways to Reduce What You Pay
Two paths can cut the total cost of a speeding ticket in Indiana, and both have to be started before your court date.
Deferral Programs
Many Indiana counties offer prosecutor-run deferral programs that keep the ticket off your record. You pay a deferral fee, stay ticket-free during a probation period of roughly six to twelve months, and at the end the charge is dismissed without a conviction. Common eligibility rules include no other moving violations in the past 12 months, no commercial driver’s license, no school zone or work zone violation, and speed no more than 25 mph over the limit.12Hamilton County, IN. Traffic Infraction Deferral Program Because the charge is dismissed, no BMV points are assigned and the violation shouldn’t hit your driving record, which is where the real insurance savings come from. Contact the county prosecutor’s office or infraction deferral clerk shortly after getting the ticket; applications generally have to be in before your scheduled court date.
Contesting the Ticket
If you believe the citation was issued in error, you can appear on the date printed on your ticket to dispute it, or have an attorney file a response by that date. Infractions are civil proceedings, so the state’s burden is a preponderance of the evidence rather than beyond a reasonable doubt.13Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 34-28-5-1 – Prosecution in Name of State or Political Subdivision Win and you owe nothing with no points added; lose and you pay the full amount with the conviction going on your record.
What Ignoring the Ticket Actually Costs
Not responding is the most expensive option. If you fail to pay after a judgment is entered, the court notifies the BMV and your driving privileges are suspended. The suspension begins 30 days after the BMV sends notice and stays in effect until you pay the judgment, appear in court, or three years pass from the court’s deadline, whichever comes first.14Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 9-30-3-8 – Failure to Appear or Answer, Issuance of Warrant
On top of the suspension, you owe the original fine, the court costs, the $25 late fee, and a reinstatement fee. If you hold an out-of-state license, Indiana notifies your home state’s motor vehicle agency, which can trigger a reciprocal suspension. Driving on a suspended license is a separate legal problem far more serious than the original ticket. If paying the full amount by the deadline isn’t workable, ask the clerk’s office about a payment plan before the deadline passes.
