Indiana tax scams generally come in four shapes: callers or letters posing as the Indiana Department of Revenue, imposters claiming to be from the IRS, mailers charging fees for property tax paperwork you can handle for free, and “ghost” preparers who fill out returns but refuse to sign them. The pattern behind all of them is the same. Real tax agencies contact you by mail first, follow written procedures, and never demand payment by gift card, wire, or cryptocurrency. Anything that skips those rules is a scam, no matter how official it looks.
Fake Indiana Department of Revenue Contacts
The Indiana DOR has warned about fake “Tax Warrant” letters circulating in the state. The letter tells you to call a 1-800 number, where someone posing as a law firm offers to settle the debt for an upfront payment by credit card or electronic check.1State of Indiana. WARNING: Tax Warrant Scam Circulating in Marion County Phone versions of the same scam threaten arrest, license suspension, or professional consequences if you don’t pay immediately.
That is not how the real DOR works. When the department believes you owe additional tax, it sends a proposed assessment by U.S. mail. The written notice gives you 60 days to pay or file a written protest, and any dispute moves through a hearing, a letter of findings, and, if needed, an appeal to the Indiana Tax Court.2Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 6 Taxation 6-8.1-5-1 No part of that process involves phone threats or same-day payment demands.
If a notice looks suspicious, don’t call the number printed on it. Verify it by calling the DOR directly at 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST, or emailing investigation@dor.in.gov.1State of Indiana. WARNING: Tax Warrant Scam Circulating in Marion County
Fake IRS Calls, Texts, and Letters
IRS impersonators use urgent phone calls, emails, and text messages claiming you owe federal taxes and must pay immediately or face arrest, deportation, or license revocation.3Internal Revenue Service. Recognize Tax Scams and Fraud Caller ID may show a Washington, D.C. area code. It’s still fake.
The IRS initiates contact by mail, not by phone, email, text, or social media. An agent may call only after a letter has already been sent, usually to confirm a scheduled audit appointment. The IRS never takes payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, and it will never threaten immediate arrest.4Internal Revenue Service. Spotting a Fake IRS Notice
Paper letters can be forged too. A real IRS CP2000 notice includes a physical IRS address in the top left corner, references a specific tax year, and lists verifiable fax numbers or IRS processing center addresses for your response.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice A genuine Notice of Federal Tax Lien only exists after the IRS has assessed your liability, billed you, and given you time to pay.6Internal Revenue Service. Understanding a Federal Tax Lien A lien letter arriving with no prior IRS correspondence is almost certainly fraudulent.
To verify anything that claims to be from the IRS, call 1-800-829-1040 or log into your IRS online account, which shows your actual balance and any notices sent to you.7Internal Revenue Service. IRS Launches New Online Tool to Help Taxpayers Resolve Tax Debt
Property Tax, Homestead, and Deed Mailers
Indiana homeowners get official-looking letters offering to file the Homestead Standard Deduction for a fee, typically $50 to $100. Filing is free. You submit Form HC-10 to your county auditor once, and you don’t refile unless you sell the property or change the title.8Indiana Department of Local Government Finance. DLGF: Deductions and Credits
Confusion helps these scams, and the homestead deduction is in the middle of a multi-year change. The maximum deduction is $48,000 for 2025 and drops to $40,000 for the 2026 assessment date, and it’s scheduled to keep decreasing each year until it reaches zero in 2030.9Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 6-1.1-12-37 – Standard Deduction for Homesteads Any letter telling you to “re-register” your homestead or pay a fee to “lock in” the old amount is fraudulent.
A related mailer urges you to buy a certified copy of your property deed, sometimes suggesting it’s required for your tax status. Prices run $60 or more for a document that costs about $6 or $7 from your county recorder. Marion County charges $1 per page plus $5 for certification, and most deeds are only a page or two.10indy.gov. Ghost Tax Preparers
A ghost preparer fills out your return for a fee but refuses to sign it or list a Preparer Tax Identification Number. Federal law requires every paid preparer to sign and include a valid PTIN.12Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: Do I Need a PTIN? A preparer who won’t sign is hiding from the IRS.
These preparers often advertise unusually large refunds or take a percentage of your refund as their fee. They inflate deductions, invent credits, and disappear after filing season. Your name and Social Security number are on the return, so any penalties and interest from an audit fall on you.13Internal Revenue Service. Be Informed, Not Fooled by Ghost Preparers and Tax Credit Scams Never sign a blank or incomplete return, and confirm the preparer’s signature and PTIN appear on the finished document before it’s submitted.
What to Do If You Already Paid or Shared Information
The first few days matter.
Freeze Your Credit
Contact all three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, and place a credit freeze on each report. A freeze is free, lasts until you lift it, and blocks anyone from opening new credit accounts in your name. A fraud alert only asks creditors to verify identity; a freeze shuts access to your report.14Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts You can lift it temporarily when you need to apply for credit yourself.
Handle Tax-Related Identity Theft
If someone files a fraudulent federal return using your Social Security number, you’ll usually find out when your real return is rejected as a duplicate. When that happens, file a paper return by mail and attach IRS Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit, to the back.15Internal Revenue Service. How IRS ID Theft Victim Assistance Works Form 14039 can also be completed online through the IRS or through IdentityTheft.gov, which forwards it electronically.16Internal Revenue Service. When to File an Identity Theft Affidavit
Expect a long wait. The IRS reports identity theft cases are currently averaging over 600 days to resolve.15Internal Revenue Service. How IRS ID Theft Victim Assistance Works After a case is resolved, the IRS typically issues an Identity Protection PIN each year going forward. You can also request an IP PIN through your IRS online account before anything happens. The six-digit number prevents anyone else from filing a return under your Social Security number.17Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
Money Sent to a Scammer
If you paid a scammer thinking you were paying the DOR or IRS, your actual tax debt is still owed. The government never received the money, so the balance stays on your account. Victims tricked into pulling money out of a retirement account face a harder problem. The National Taxpayer Advocate has noted that current law provides no relief from the income tax or early withdrawal penalties triggered by those distributions, even though the taxpayer never kept the funds.18Internal Revenue Service (Taxpayer Advocate Service). Reporting a Tax Scam in Indiana
Preserve the evidence first. Save the caller ID number, the full email address including its domain, or the original envelope and letter. Note the dollar amount demanded and the payment method requested. Those details help investigators match your report to a broader pattern.
Then route the report to the right agency:
- Indiana DOR impersonation: email investigation@dor.in.gov or call 317-232-2240 during business hours.1State of Indiana. WARNING: Tax Warrant Scam Circulating in Marion County
- IRS impersonation: forward details to phishing@irs.gov or call 1-800-829-1040.1State of Indiana. WARNING: Tax Warrant Scam Circulating in Marion County
- Property tax mailers, deed scams, and other consumer fraud: file a complaint through the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division online portal. The form asks for your contact information, a description of the scam, any loss amount, and copies of documents. Do not put your Social Security number on the form.
The Attorney General’s office investigates these matters under Indiana’s Deceptive Consumer Sales Act, which covers unfair or misleading practices in consumer transactions.19Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 24-5-0.5-4 – Actions and Proceedings; Damages; Injunctions; Civil Penalties
