The Indiana unemployment phone number is 1-800-891-6499. That line reaches the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Benefit Call Center, and it’s open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern. It’s closed on weekends and state holidays.
All DWD Phone Numbers
DWD runs separate lines depending on who you are and what you need:

- Tax Call Center (employers): 1-800-437-9136, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Eastern
- TDD/TTY (deaf or hard of hearing): 317-232-7560

What to Have Ready Before You Call
The automated system verifies your identity before routing you to a person. Gather everything before you dial so you’re not restarting the call after a disconnect:
- Social Security number, driver’s license or state ID, date of birth, and a current phone number
- Your current mailing address on file with DWD
- Your most recent employer’s name, mailing address, phone number, your dates of employment, and the reason you’re unemployed
- Bank routing and account numbers if you want direct deposit
You don’t need pay stubs or W-2s. DWD calculates your weekly benefit from wages employers reported during your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your claim date.3Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Tips for Reaching a Live Representative
Hold times spike on Mondays, the first business day after a holiday, and during widespread layoffs. Early morning and the last hour before closing usually run shorter, but there’s no guarantee. The automated system will route you based on the option you select, so listen through the menu before pressing anything.
Once you reach an agent, they’ll verify your identity before discussing your claim. They can review flags or holds on your account, explain a delayed payment, and tell you whether DWD is waiting on documents from you. After you hang up, log into Uplink and check for updated notifications or follow-up requests. A written record protects you if there’s ever a dispute about what you were told over the phone.
When Uplink Is Faster Than the Phone
Most of what people call about can be handled in Uplink, Indiana’s online claim portal. You can file an initial claim, submit weekly vouchers, view payment history, and read DWD correspondence there.5Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Claimant Self Service Uplink also has a live chat feature for shorter questions.
Your weekly voucher is the most time-sensitive item, and it has to be filed on schedule. You’ll report your two required weekly work search activities and any part-time earnings on it.6Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Work Search Filing an initial claim also creates an Indiana Career Connect account you can use to build a resume and look for work.7Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Indiana Unemployment Submitting through Uplink leaves a permanent record, which matters if DWD later asks whether you met your obligations. Payments come by direct deposit if you provided bank information when filing, or by prepaid debit card mailed to your address if you didn’t.8Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Good Reasons to Actually Call
Some situations are worth the hold time. Call the Benefit Call Center if:
- Your Monetary Determination shows wages that look wrong or missing quarters. Employer wage reporting errors happen and can significantly reduce your weekly amount.
- A payment you expected didn’t arrive and Uplink doesn’t explain why.
- There’s a hold or flag on your account and the notice doesn’t tell you what document DWD needs.
- You need to update information the online portal won’t let you change.
If Your Claim Is Denied
You have 15 days from the mailing date of the determination to request a hearing before an administrative law judge.9Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code 22-4-17-2 – Filing; Determination of Status; Disputed Claims The clock runs from the mail date, not the day the letter shows up in your mailbox. You can file the appeal through Uplink or by calling the Benefit Call Center. Miss the deadline and the determination becomes final. Further appeals to the Review Board and the courts exist after the hearing, but each level carries its own deadline.
