Iowa Digital ID: Setup, Accepted Uses, and Security

Iowa’s digital ID is a free smartphone version of your Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID card, issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation and available through a standalone app or Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet.1Iowa Department of Transportation. Mobile ID It works at more than 250 TSA airport checkpoints nationwide and at Iowa businesses equipped to scan it, but it does not replace your plastic card when you drive, vote, or enter most federal buildings.2Transportation Security Administration. How to Get It

You need a valid, unexpired Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID and a compatible smartphone. Temporary paper IDs and expired cards won’t work. iPhones need iOS 16.0 or later; Android phones need a current version. Search for “Iowa Mobile ID” in the App Store or Google Play, or add the credential directly to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet.2Transportation Security Administration. Setup takes a few minutes. You scan the front and back of your physical card so the app can read the barcode and printed data, then do a liveness check: a short series of real-time selfies that get compared against the photo the DOT already has on file. Once both steps pass, the app submits everything for final state verification, and the credential loads into your phone for immediate use.

Where It’s Accepted

TSA Checkpoints

The Iowa digital ID is accepted at participating TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports, including Des Moines International and Eastern Iowa Airport, through the standalone app or any of the three supported wallets. Your underlying physical license must be REAL ID-compliant for the mobile version to count at TSA.2Transportation Security Administration. Iowa Businesses

Bars, liquor stores, and other retailers selling age-restricted products can accept the mobile ID if they have compatible verification equipment.4Iowa Department of Transportation. Mobile ID for Businesses and Organizations Adoption is growing but uneven, so don’t assume any given business is ready to scan a phone instead of a card.

Where It Doesn’t Work

This is where people get caught out. The digital ID is a supplement, not a replacement.

  • Driving. Iowa law requires you to have your physical license in your immediate possession when operating a motor vehicle. Showing only your phone at a traffic stop can get you cited.5Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 321.174 – Operators Licensed – Operation of Commercial Motor Vehicles
  • Voting. The mobile ID is not on Iowa’s list of acceptable voter identification. You’ll need a physical Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID, a U.S. passport, a military or veteran ID, an Iowa Voter ID PIN card, or a tribal ID.6Voter Ready. Voter ID Information
  • Federal buildings. Federal facility security guidance requires a REAL ID-compliant physical ID or passport and does not list mobile driver’s licenses as accepted identification.7Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities

Keep the plastic card in your wallet and use the mobile version where it’s explicitly accepted.

Security and What You Share

The app sits behind your phone’s own security layer, whether Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN. Someone who unlocks your phone still can’t open the credential without clearing that second barrier.3Iowa Department of Transportation. Iowa Mobile ID App

The more practical privacy feature is selective disclosure. When a bartender checks your age, you can share only that you’re over 21, without handing over your full date of birth, home address, or license number. You decide which pieces are transmitted in each scan. The app doesn’t permanently store your personal data on the device beyond an encrypted version of your license and phone numbers used as record locators; your full record stays with the DOT.3Iowa Department of Transportation. If You Lose Your Phone or Get a New One

A lost or stolen phone doesn’t expose your identity, because the app’s biometric lock blocks access even if someone gets past the phone’s lock screen. On a replacement phone, download the app again and reactivate your credential. It can only be active on one device at a time, so setting it up on the new phone automatically deactivates the old one, with no DOT office visit required.3Iowa Department of Transportation.
