Iowa Tint Law: VLT Limits, Medical Exemptions, and Fines

Under Iowa tint law, your front windshield, front side windows, and front vent windows must allow at least 70% of outside light to pass through, while rear side windows and the back windshield have no darkness limit at all. The rule lives in Iowa Code Section 321.438, with the specific 70% figure set by Iowa Administrative Code rule 761-450.7.1Iowa Legislature. What 70% VLT Means for Front Windows

Visible light transmission (VLT) is the percentage of outside light that passes through the glass. At 70%, Iowa’s threshold is barely darker than factory glass, which typically transmits between 70% and 85% of light on its own. That creates a trap: add even a light aftermarket film to factory glass already sitting near 70%, and the combined reading can drop below the legal line.3O’Brien County Sheriff. The 70% standard covers three areas: the windshield, the driver’s and front passenger’s side windows, and any vent windows forward of the driver. A reputable installer should confirm the VLT rating of the film before applying it, and some shops will meter the finished glass before you leave.

Iowa does not require manufacturer certification or a compliance sticker on tinted windows, so the burden of proving your tint is legal rests on you if you’re stopped.

Reflective Coatings Are Also Restricted

Section 321.438 bans excessively reflective front windows along with excessively dark ones. A mirror-like or metallic finish on the windshield or front side windows violates the statute even if the film technically passes 70% light through.1Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 321.438 – Windshields and Windows The reflective restriction applies only to the front; Iowa does not explicitly prohibit reflective finishes on rear glass.

Rear Windows: No Darkness Limit

You can apply any shade you want to the rear side windows and the back windshield, including heavy limo tint that blocks nearly all light. This applies equally to sedans, SUVs, trucks, and vans. The 70% transparency standard explicitly applies only to the windshield, front side windows, and front sidewings.3O’Brien County Sheriff. Iowa Code 321.438 – Windshields and Windows

If you tint the rear glass dark enough that you can’t see through it, make sure both side mirrors are working and properly adjusted, because you’ll be relying on them entirely for rearward visibility.

Iowa also imposes no restrictions on tint color. Some states ban red, amber, or other hues to avoid confusion with emergency vehicles; Iowa’s statute focuses on light transmission and reflectivity only.

Medical Exemptions for Darker Front Tint

Iowa’s administrative rules allow the Department of Transportation to grant medical exemptions for drivers who need darker front windows due to a health condition. Severe photosensitivity, lupus, and certain skin disorders are typical grounds.

To apply, get the medical exemption form from the Iowa DOT, have a licensed physician document why darker tint is medically necessary, and submit the completed paperwork to the DOT for review. If approved, keep the documentation in your vehicle and have it accessible during any traffic stop. Without it on hand, an officer has no way to distinguish your exempt vehicle from one running illegal tint, and you may still receive a citation you’d have to contest later.

An Iowa medical exemption does not automatically carry legal weight in other states. If you drive across state lines regularly, check the tint laws where you travel; some are stricter, and Iowa’s paperwork may not shield you from a ticket elsewhere.

Fines and Penalties

A window tint violation is a simple misdemeanor. The Iowa Courts’ scheduled fine for a dark window or windshield violation is $70.00 before surcharges, totaling $175.75 after court costs.2Iowa Judicial Branch. Scheduled Violations Compendium

Because the offense is classified as a simple misdemeanor, the statutory maximum runs higher than the scheduled fine. A judge can impose a fine between $105 and $855 and can order up to 30 days in jail in place of or on top of the fine.4Iowa Legislature. Iowa Code 903.1 – Maximum Sentence for Misdemeanants Jail time for a tint violation alone is extremely rare, but repeat offenders and drivers who combine tint with other infractions face less sympathy from the bench.

Officers typically use a photometer pressed against the window to get an on-the-spot VLT reading, and that measurement backs the citation.

Insurance and Removal Costs

A tint citation goes on your driving record like any other traffic violation, so your insurer can see it at renewal and may raise your premium. The bigger exposure shows up after an accident: if your windows carry illegal tint and your vehicle is damaged, your insurer may cover the body repairs but refuse to pay for the tinted windows themselves, leaving that cost on you.

Professional tint removal runs roughly $50 to $150 if you need to strip illegal film after a citation. If your front windows don’t meet 70%, removal is usually cheaper than repeat fines and insurance friction.
