IRS Mailing Address in Utah for Federal Tax Returns

If you live in Utah and are mailing a paper federal return, the Utah IRS mailing address depends on which form you’re filing and whether a payment is enclosed. Most individual returns without a payment go to the IRS processing center in Ogden; returns with a check go to a Louisville lockbox; and a handful of forms route to Charlotte or Kansas City. The addresses below cover the common situations.

Individual Return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR)

No balance due, or already paid:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Ogden, UT 84201-0002

With a check or money order enclosed:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 931000
Louisville, KY 40293-1000

The payment address is a lockbox facility that processes checks separately from returns. Sending a payment to the Ogden address risks having your check separated from your return and can trigger late-payment notices even when you paid on time.1Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Estimated Payments (Form 1040-ES)

Utah residents mailing Form 1040-ES with a payment voucher send it to Charlotte, not Ogden:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 1300
Charlotte, NC 28201-13002Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals Filing Form 1040-ES

If the voucher ends up in Ogden with your annual return, expect processing delays.

Amended Return (Form 1040-X)

To correct a previously filed individual return:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Ogden, UT 84201-00523Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals Filing Form 1040-X

The ZIP+4 differs from the standard 1040 address. The IRS updates addresses periodically, so confirm on IRS.gov if you’re filing outside the normal season.

Extension Request (Form 4868)

Without a payment:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Ogden, UT 84201-0045

With a payment:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 931300
Louisville, KY 40293-13004Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals

An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you owe and file Form 4868 without paying, interest and late-payment penalties start accruing the day after the original due date.

Business Returns

Utah businesses file most returns to Ogden, but the ZIP extension varies by form. The 1120 and 1120-S addresses differ by one digit, which is an easy mix-up.

If You’re Using FedEx, UPS, or DHL

Private carriers can’t deliver to P.O. Boxes. For returns that normally go to an Ogden P.O. Box, ship to the street address:

Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center
1973 Rulon White Blvd.
Ogden, UT 8420110Internal Revenue Service. Submission Processing Center Street Addresses for Private Delivery Service (PDS)

Only specific service levels count as timely filed under federal tax rules. FedEx Ground and UPS Ground are not on the approved list. Qualifying services include FedEx Priority Overnight, UPS Next Day Air, and DHL Express, among others.11Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS) If you use a service that isn’t on the list and the return arrives after the deadline, the IRS treats it as late no matter when you shipped it.

The Postmark Rule and Proof of Mailing

A tax return postmarked on or before the due date is treated as filed on time, even if it reaches the IRS days later. This “mailbox rule” comes from 26 U.S.C. ยง 7502. The postmark date controls, not the date you dropped the envelope in the mailbox or the date the IRS receives it.12GovInfo. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying

One catch: if your envelope carries both a private postage meter date and a USPS postmark, the USPS postmark wins, even if it’s later. Meter-stamp on April 15 but the post office doesn’t postmark until April 16, and the IRS considers it filed on the 16th.

For that reason, USPS Certified Mail is worth the few extra dollars on any paper return. The receipt is timestamped proof of when the post office accepted your envelope.13USPS. Mail Your Tax Return with USPS Keep it. If the IRS ever says it never received your return, that receipt is your proof of timely filing.

You May Not Need to Mail Anything

Before you address an envelope, consider whether you need paper at all. The IRS treats electronic filing as faster, safer, and more accurate than paper.14Internal Revenue Service. Electronic Filing (E-File) E-filed returns are typically processed within 21 days; paper returns can take six weeks or longer. E-filing also gives you immediate confirmation of receipt, which removes the proof-of-mailing question entirely. IRS Free File is available for taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less, and most commercial tax software handles e-filing as part of preparation.
