Permit From Your Local Board of Health

Before you install a rainwater cistern, get a permit from your local board of health. Your submitted plans must show the locations, layout, and type of all water system equipment, including any disinfection and filtration components. Rules If the Water Is for Drinking

If you plan to use collected rainwater for drinking, cooking, or bathing, Ohio imposes its strictest treatment requirements. Every potable cistern also needs cyst reduction filtration meeting the NSF 53 standard, which targets protozoan parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium that chlorine alone may not eliminate. Rules If the Water Is Non-Potable

If you only intend to use harvested rainwater for irrigation, toilet flushing, or other non-potable purposes, the rules relax considerably. To qualify for the non-potable exemption, your system must include an operational pumping system, and there can be no physical connection between the rainwater system and any other water system, including your municipal supply.

Keeping Rainwater Separate From Public Water

Ohio treats a rainwater harvesting system as an auxiliary water supply that poses a backflow hazard to the public water system.
