To get a Florida REAL ID, you need to visit a driver’s license service center in person with one original proof of identity, one document showing your full Social Security number, and two documents proving your Florida residential address. Florida has been issuing REAL ID compliant credentials since January 1, 2010, so if your current license has a gold star in the upper right corner, you already have one and don’t need to do anything.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Check Your Current License First
Look at the upper right corner of your Florida driver’s license or ID card. A gold star printed there means the credential is REAL ID compliant and will get you through a TSA checkpoint and into federal facilities. No star, or the words “Federal Limits Apply” on the face of the card, means it won’t.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
A “Federal Limits Apply” license is still a valid Florida driver’s license for driving, proving your age, or dealing with state agencies. The limitation kicks in only when you try to use it for a federal purpose. Many Florida residents hold these credentials without realizing it until they reach an airport security line.
Documents You Need to Bring
The FLHSMV requires three categories of documents at the service center, and every item must be an original or certified copy. Photocopies, phone photos, and expired versions will send you home.
Proof of Identity (One Document)
- Certified U.S. birth certificate (not the decorative hospital version)
- Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
- Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
- Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
Birth certificates issued by Puerto Rico must be dated after July 1, 2010.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen – What to Bring
Proof of Social Security Number (One Document)
Your Social Security card is the easiest option. If you can’t find it, the FLHSMV also accepts a W-2 form (not handwritten), a paycheck or pay stub showing your full number, an SSA-1099, or any other 1099 form, as long as it isn’t handwritten.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen – What to Bring
Proof of Florida Residential Address (Two Documents)
This is where most applications stall. You need two different documents showing your Florida residential address, and a P.O. box doesn’t count. The accepted list includes:
- Deed, mortgage statement, or residential lease
- Florida voter registration card
- Florida vehicle registration or title
- Utility bills dated within the last 60 days
- Insurance policies
- Bank or credit card statements dated within 60 days
- Mail from a government agency dated within 60 days
The 60-day rule on bills and statements catches people out. Pull fresh copies right before your appointment rather than digging through a drawer for whatever is handy.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen – What to Bring
If you live with someone else and don’t have bills or mail in your name, that person can complete a Certification of Address form and bring two of their own address documents to vouch for your residency.
Name-Change Documentation (If Your Name Has Changed)
If the name on your identity document isn’t the name you use today, you need to bridge the gap. Original or certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and court-ordered name changes all work. If you’ve changed your name more than once, bring every document in the chain connecting your birth name to your current name. Missing a link means an incomplete application.
How to Apply
Your first REAL ID has to be issued in person at a driver’s license service center. There is no online path for the initial upgrade because the FLHSMV needs to see your original documents and verify them face to face.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Schedule an appointment through the FLHSMV website before you go; walk-ins at busy locations often wait for hours or get turned away.
At the appointment, an agent reviews your documents, takes a new photo, and collects the fee. A standalone ID card costs $25, and an additional $6.25 service fee may apply at tax collector offices. Veterans who provide proof of veteran status are exempt from that service fee. Driver’s license fees vary by class and length of validity, so confirm the exact amount for your transaction on the FLHSMV fees page before you arrive.3Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
You leave with a temporary paper permit. The permanent card is mailed to the address on your application, typically within seven to ten business days, though first-time REAL ID cards can take a bit longer. If yours hasn’t arrived after three weeks, contact the FLHSMV.
Once you hold a REAL ID compliant credential, future renewals and replacements can usually be handled online through the MyDMV Portal. Since January 2, 2020, customers who aren’t yet REAL ID compliant have been shut out of the online portal for renewals and replacements entirely.1Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID Upgrading once unlocks online convenience for every future transaction.
Why This Matters Now
REAL ID enforcement at TSA checkpoints began on May 7, 2025. Since that date, a Florida license without the gold star no longer gets you onto a domestic flight on its own.4Transportation Security Administration. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025
Starting February 1, 2026, TSA added a backup called ConfirmID. Travelers who arrive without a REAL ID or another acceptable ID can pay $45 to have their identity verified, but they face additional screening and possible delays, and if TSA can’t verify them, they don’t pass through at all.5Transportation Security Administration. $45 Fee Option for Air Travelers Without a REAL ID Begins February 1 It’s an expensive workaround for something a single service center visit fixes permanently.
If You’d Rather Not Get a REAL ID
A compliant license isn’t the only way through a TSA checkpoint. Several other federally issued documents also work for domestic air travel:
- U.S. passport or passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs
- Permanent resident card
- Foreign passport
- Federally recognized tribal ID
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card
TSA is also testing digital IDs, including Apple Digital ID and Google ID pass, at participating airports.6Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you already carry a passport everywhere you fly, you can skip the REAL ID upgrade. If you don’t, the gold star is the simpler fix.
Non-Citizens
Lawful permanent residents and non-immigrants with valid status can get a Florida REAL ID, but the document list is different. Permanent residents generally need an unexpired green card (Form I-551). Non-immigrants must provide proof of lawful status from the Department of Homeland Security, such as a valid employment authorization card or an unexpired foreign passport with the appropriate federal stamp or I-94.7The Florida Senate. Florida Code 322.08 – Application for License; Requirements for License and Identification Card Forms
The FLHSMV publishes separate checklists for immigrants and non-immigrants on its website. Review the one that matches your status before your appointment. Bringing the wrong version of an immigration document is one of the most common reasons non-citizen applications get rejected at the counter.
