Is Florida Treasure Hunt Legit or a Scam? How to Verify and Claim

Florida Treasure Hunt is legitimate. It’s the public-facing name for Florida’s unclaimed property program, run by the Division of Unclaimed Property inside the state Department of Financial Services, and searching or claiming through it is free.¹ Scammers do impersonate it, though, so the useful question isn’t whether the program is real but whether the letter, text, or call you received is.

What the Program Actually Is

The program operates under Florida Statutes Chapter 717, the Florida Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act.² When a bank, insurer, or other business loses contact with an account holder for a set period, the law requires it to turn the funds over to the state. Florida then holds the money as custodian, not as owner. It still belongs to you or your heirs, there is no deadline to claim it, and there is no fee.¹

The property held ranges from dormant bank accounts and uncashed checks to unclaimed insurance proceeds, stocks, dividends, credit balances, refunds, and the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes.¹ Before any of that gets remitted, the original holder is required to mail a notice to the owner’s last known address for property worth $50 or more.² So a mailed notice about a dormant account is normal, expected, and often genuine.

How to Tell a Real Contact from a Scam

The single clearest rule comes from the Department of Financial Services itself: it will not contact you by text message about a claim.³ Any text claiming to be from Florida Treasure Hunt is fraudulent. Full stop.

Beyond that, these are the signs a contact is not what it claims to be:

A request for an upfront fee, wire transfer, or gift card to “release” your funds. The state charges nothing to search, file, or process a claim.⁴
Pressure to act within hours or days. Florida holds your property with no deadline, so urgency is a manipulation tactic, not a program feature.¹
A web address that is not fltreasurehunt.gov. Lookalike domains ending in .com, .net, or .org are common; the .gov suffix requires government verification.
Requests for your Social Security number, banking details, or ID over the phone or through an email link. The department collects documentation through a mailed paper claim form, not phone calls or email attachments.

The safe move when a notice arrives: ignore its links and phone numbers, open a browser yourself, and go directly to fltreasurehunt.gov. If you have property, it will appear when you search your name.

How to Verify by Searching Yourself

The official site is fltreasurehunt.gov. The search is free, runs around the clock, and needs only your name to start.¹ Try your current legal name, any previous names (including a maiden name), and older spellings, because property may have been reported under whichever version the original company had on file. If you have owned a business, search that entity’s name as well.

If you have lived in other states, a second free search at MissingMoney.com covers the national database maintained by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.⁵ When a match turns up in Florida’s system, the site generates a claim form with a claim number. Write that number down; you will need it for every follow-up.⁶

What Claiming Costs

Nothing, when you do it yourself through the state. Florida law sets it as public policy that owners receive the full amount of their unclaimed property without any fee.⁴

Private recovery agents, sometimes called finders, may contact you offering to retrieve property for a cut. Those services are legal but optional, and Florida caps the total fees and costs a finder can charge at 30 percent of the claimed amount. If an agreement exceeds that cap, the department automatically reduces the fee to 30 percent and sends the balance directly to you.⁷ A licensed finder is not a scam, but paying one to do a free search on your behalf rarely makes sense.

How a Real Claim Is Submitted

This is where a scam pitch and the real process diverge most clearly. Filing with Florida is not a one-click online transaction. You have to print the claim form the site generates, sign it, attach copies of your identification and any requested supporting documents, and mail the package to the address on the form. The department is explicit: entering information on the website does not count as filing a claim, and if you have not physically completed and mailed the form, you have not filed.⁶

Every claim requires a copy of a driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID. If the address on your ID does not match where you live now, include a current utility bill. You may also be asked for your Social Security number and proof of your past address or connection to the company that reported the account. The form itself lists what your particular claim needs. Handwritten letters, business cards, internet printouts, and phone directory pages are not accepted.¹

Once the department has a complete package, it has up to 90 days to make a determination.¹ The clock does not start until every required document is in hand, so a single missing item can add weeks. You can check receipt through the website using your claim number.

If a message about your “Florida Treasure Hunt claim” wants payment, urgency, or your bank details, it is not the state. If a search you run yourself at fltreasurehunt.gov turns up your name, the money is real and yours to claim, free, in your own time.
