Iowa is a Republican state in 2026. The question of whether Iowa is a Republican or Democratic state has a clear answer today: Republicans hold the governorship, both U.S. Senate seats, all four U.S. House seats, and commanding majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. Donald Trump has now carried Iowa three times in a row by double digits, and the GOP’s registration advantage over Democrats runs to nearly 180,000 voters.
Who Holds Power in Iowa Right Now
Governor Kim Reynolds, a Republican, won re-election in 2022 with 58.0% of the vote, a 19-point margin over her Democratic challenger.1Iowa Secretary of State. 2022 General Election Results Both U.S. Senate seats belong to Republicans: Chuck Grassley, first elected in 1980 and re-elected in 2022, and Joni Ernst, who won in 2014 and again in 2020.2U.S. Senate. In the statehouse, Republicans have a government trifecta. After an August 2025 special election, they held the Iowa Senate 33-17, one seat shy of a two-thirds supermajority. The Iowa House stands at roughly a two-to-one Republican advantage. That special election, triggered by the death of a Republican senator, was won by Democrat Catelin Drey, one of the few recent bright spots for Iowa Democrats.
Voter Registration in Iowa
As of August 2025, Iowa had 751,809 registered Republicans and 572,944 registered Democrats.5Iowa Secretary of State. Voter Registration Statistics – August 2025 Another 687,979 Iowans were registered with no party affiliation, roughly 34% of the electorate. That unaffiliated bloc is large enough to swing close races, and recent elections suggest most of those voters have been breaking Republican.
Iowa Used to Be a Swing State
The current Republican dominance is recent. Iowa backed the Democratic presidential nominee in six of seven elections from 1988 through 2012, with 2004 the only exception. Barack Obama carried the state twice. For a quarter century, Iowa had a reputation as a purple bellwether both parties fought hard to win.
That ended in 2016. Trump won Iowa by more than 9 points that year, then took 53.1% of the vote in 2020.6Federal Election Commission. Why Iowa Shifted Right
The Rural-Urban Divide
Iowa is one of the most rural states in the country, and the national sorting of rural voters into the Republican column hit here especially hard. Democrats still win Des Moines, Iowa City, and Davenport, but those urban areas don’t have enough population to offset the margins Republicans run up across the state’s 99 mostly rural counties. The gap widened sharply between 2012 and 2016 and has kept widening.
Education and Class
White voters without a four-year degree make up a larger share of Iowa’s electorate than the national average, and their movement toward Republicans since 2016 accounts for much of the state’s rightward shift. College-educated voters, roughly 29% of the Iowa electorate, moved the other way, but not by enough to close the gap.
Agriculture and Economic Policy
Iowa is the nation’s top corn producer and a major soybean state, and agricultural policy shapes voter priorities in ways that don’t map cleanly onto the national left-right divide. Ethanol mandates, crop insurance, and trade policy all carry heavy weight in Iowa elections. In 2025, Iowa crop producers received an estimated $846 million in federal economic assistance under the American Relief Act for the 2024 crop year alone. Iowa also moved to a 3.8% flat individual income tax rate starting in 2026, down from a graduated system that previously topped out above 8%.8Iowa Department of Revenue. IDR Announces 2026 Individual Income Tax and Interest Rates Reynolds championed the tax overhaul as a centerpiece of Republican governance.
The 2026 Senate Race Is the Next Test
Ernst’s decision not to seek re-election makes the 2026 U.S. Senate race the most competitive Iowa contest in years. Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson launched her campaign shortly after the announcement and quickly picked up endorsements from Senate leadership. On the Democratic side, state Senator Zach Wahls and state Representative Josh Turek are among the candidates running.
Open seats are harder for the incumbent party to defend, and Democrats view the race as a long-shot pickup opportunity. Trump’s 13-point 2024 margin gives Republicans a real cushion, but midterm electorates differ from presidential ones, and Iowa’s large unaffiliated bloc could matter more in an open-seat year.
The Maps Aren’t the Reason
Iowa’s Republican dominance isn’t a product of gerrymandering. Since 1980, congressional and legislative districts have been drawn by the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency, which is prohibited from using voter registration data, past election results, or incumbent addresses when drawing lines.9Iowa Legislature.
