Yes, Ohio is a Republican state. Republicans hold the governorship, every other statewide executive office, veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, a 6-1 majority on the Ohio Supreme Court, both U.S. Senate seats, and 11 of the state’s 15 U.S. House seats. Donald Trump has carried Ohio in three straight presidential elections by growing margins, winning by more than eleven points in 2024. The state spent most of the twentieth century as the country’s premier swing state, but that era is over.
Presidential Results Tell the Clearest Story
Between 1912 and 2012, Ohio voted for the winning presidential candidate in every election except two, and no Republican had ever won the White House without carrying it. George W. Bush took the state by half a point in 2000 and two points in 2004. Barack Obama won it twice, with 51.5% in 2008 and 50.7% in 2012.1270toWin. Ohio Presidential Voting History
Then the trend line broke. Trump beat Hillary Clinton by roughly eight points in 2016. He beat Joe Biden by about eight points again in 2020, taking 53.3% to Biden’s 45.2%, even as he lost nationally. In 2024 he beat Kamala Harris by more than eleven points, 55.2% to 43.7%, a margin of nearly 700,000 votes.2Ohio Secretary of State. Republicans hold 65 of 99 seats in the Ohio House and 24 of 33 seats in the Ohio Senate.6National Conference of State Legislatures. Every other statewide executive office is Republican-held too: attorney general, secretary of state, auditor, and treasurer. The last Democrat to win any of them was elected in 2006. On the Ohio Supreme Court, Republicans hold six of the seven seats; Justice Jennifer Brunner is the only Democrat currently elected to a top government office in the state.8Ohio Capital Journal. Both U.S. Senate seats are Republican. Why Ohio Moved to the Right
Political scientists point to several forces working in the same direction, most of them accelerated by Trump’s 2016 candidacy.
The dominant factor is educational realignment. Nationally, voters without college degrees have moved sharply toward Republicans, and Ohio has more of them than most states. Only 32% of Ohioans hold a bachelor’s degree, compared to 36.2% nationally.13Kent State News Lab. How Ohio Went From a Purple State to Solidly Red Kyle Kondik of Sabato’s Crystal Ball has described the state’s shift as a “realignment” supercharged by Trump.14Ohio Capital Journal. Why Ohio Is Not Considered a Swing State
Economic change runs alongside education. Ohio lost large numbers of manufacturing and automotive jobs in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and the accompanying decline in union membership eroded both the organizational infrastructure and the cultural identity that had tied blue-collar communities to the Democratic Party.13Kent State News Lab. How Ohio Went From a Purple State to Solidly Red Paul Beck, professor emeritus of political science at Ohio State University, has said Trump’s popularity among white working-class voters in Northeast Ohio and Appalachia was decisive.14Ohio Capital Journal. Why Ohio Is Not Considered a Swing State
Demographics amplify both effects. Ohio was 76.7% white in 2023, compared to 58.4% nationally, and white voters without college degrees have moved the furthest toward Republicans.13Kent State News Lab. How Ohio Went From a Purple State to Solidly Red Justin Buchler of Case Western Reserve University has argued the shift is primarily driven by “demography and demographic reactions to modern polarization.”15Case Western Reserve University. Geography has sorted along the same lines. Ohio’s population is roughly 50% suburban, 30% rural, and 20% urban.16Cleveland State University. One Important Caveat: Ballot Initiatives
Calling Ohio a Republican state accurately describes who wins elections. It does not fully describe how Ohioans vote on policy questions put directly to them.
In November 2023, roughly 57% of Ohio voters approved Issue 1, a constitutional amendment enshrining the right to abortion until fetal viability and protecting access to contraception, miscarriage care, and fertility treatment.18The 19th. Ohio’s Abortion Protections Take Effect Months earlier, Republican legislators had tried to raise the threshold for passing citizen-initiated amendments through an August 2023 ballot measure; voters rejected that too. After Issue 1 passed, some Republican leaders discussed a repeal or replacement, including a 15-week ban floated by Senate President Matt Huffman, but those efforts subsided once it became clear the amendment had won in counties represented by Republican legislators.
Other campaigns have followed the same route. A Raise the Wage Ohio effort has pursued a constitutional amendment to lift the state minimum wage to $15 per hour.19Ohio Capital Journal. Raise the Wage Ohio Minimum Wage Amendment Petitions certified by the attorney general’s office have covered equal rights, marriage equality, redistricting reform, and property tax changes.20Ohio Attorney General. Petitions Submitted to the Attorney General’s Office The pattern: Ohioans elect Republicans in candidate races and sometimes vote against the Republican policy agenda when it reaches the ballot directly.
Is That Likely to Change Soon?
Not on the current evidence. Democrats face steep structural and demographic headwinds, and their own leaders have described the party’s Ohio brand as being in crisis, citing depressed turnout in urban strongholds, a disconnect between national messaging and working-class voters, and the effect of Republican-drawn maps.21Signal Ohio. Democrats Say the Three C’s Are Crucial to Make Ohio Competitive Again Cuyahoga County turnout came in at just 63% in 2024, eight points below the statewide average, and Franklin County (Columbus) has surpassed Cuyahoga in registered voters.22Signal Cleveland. Ohio’s Shifting Political Map Kondik has said a return to competitive status would require Democrats to recover ground with white working-class voters and generate more from the suburbs.14Ohio Capital Journal. Why Ohio Is Not Considered a Swing State
The 2026 cycle offers a test. All statewide executive offices are open because every incumbent is term-limited, and Democrats are fielding candidates for each, including Amy Acton for governor and Sherrod Brown challenging Jon Husted for Senate. Brown is currently outraising Husted.8Ohio Capital Journal. In candidate races, Ohio has been a Republican state for close to a decade, and the margins have been growing rather than shrinking.
