Is There a Grace Period for Expired Registration in Texas?

In Texas, the expired registration grace period is five working days. Section 502.407 of the Texas Transportation Code makes it a citeable offense to drive on an expired registration only after the fifth working day following the expiration date on your sticker.1State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 502.407 – Operation of Vehicle With Expired License Plate Your vehicle is technically unregistered during that window, but law enforcement cannot write you a ticket for it.

How the Five Working Days Are Counted

Working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays, so the actual calendar window is often longer than five days. If your sticker expires March 31 and April 1 is a Tuesday, the grace period runs through the following Monday. A holiday inside that stretch pushes the deadline out further.

Treat the window as a hard prompt to renew, not as breathing room. Online renewal takes a few minutes, and once the fifth working day passes you are exposed to a fine, court costs, and an added surcharge on the registration itself.

What an Expired Registration Ticket Costs

Driving on an expired registration after the grace period is a traffic offense that can carry a citation of up to $200, plus court costs that vary by jurisdiction and often push the total well above the base fine.2Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Register Your Vehicle

When you finally renew after a citation, the county tax assessor-collector’s office adds a charge equal to 20 percent of the standard registration fee.3Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Registration Manual – Section 502.472 On a passenger vehicle with a $50.75 base fee, that’s roughly ten dollars more. The ticket and court costs are the larger sting.

Getting the Ticket Dismissed

Section 502.407 lets a justice of the peace or municipal court judge dismiss the expired registration charge if you meet two conditions. You have to renew your registration within 20 working days of the offense (or before your first court appearance, whichever comes later), and you have to pay the required registration fee, including any late fee. The court may also charge an administrative reimbursement fee of up to $20 for the dismissal itself.1State of Texas. Paying a $20 fee to drop a $200-plus fine is about as good a result as traffic court offers. Act quickly. Renew the registration, save the receipt, and bring proof of the renewal and fee payment to your court date. Miss the 20-working-day window or your court appearance, and the judge no longer has the option to dismiss. A missed appearance can also lead to a warrant on top of the original fine.

The statute contains one narrow additional defense: if the county tax assessor-collector’s office was closed for a prolonged period under department rules and your registration had been expired for 30 working days or less, that closure can support a defense in court.1State of Texas. How to Renew Before the Deadline Bites

You can renew as early as 90 days before your sticker expires, and your new period still runs a full 12 months from the original expiration date, so renewing early costs you nothing.4Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. TxDMV News: Two Steps, One Sticker Begins March 1 Three methods are available:

  • Online at the Texas by Texas platform (txt.texas.gov), for personal, non-commercial vehicles, up to 90 days before expiration or up to one year after, provided you have not received a citation for expired registration.
  • By mail to your county tax assessor-collector’s office, sending your renewal notice, proof of current liability insurance, a copy of a valid government-issued ID, any inspection documentation, and all fees listed on the notice.
  • In person at your county tax assessor-collector’s office or an approved substation, with your renewal notice, proof of insurance, and valid ID.

You need current liability insurance on file no matter which method you pick. Texas verifies coverage through the TexasSure system, and the renewal will not process without it.5Texas.gov. Texas Vehicle Registration

The five-working-day grace period applies to Texas registrations that have expired. It is not the clock that governs new residents or military members, and assuming otherwise can leave you unregistered.
