Is There a Grace Period for Expired Tags in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin has no grace period for expired tags. Under state law, driving becomes illegal the day after your registration expires. Two things soften that in practice: a separate statute shields your vehicle from being towed for the first 31 days after expiration, and the late renewal fee is a flat $10 no matter how long you’ve lapsed. So while there’s no legal cushion, there is a narrow window where a quick fix costs almost nothing.

What Counts as Expired

Wisconsin Statute 341.04 makes it unlawful to operate a motor vehicle on any highway unless the vehicle is currently registered and displaying valid plates or other evidence of registration.¹ The statute draws no distinction between one day expired and one year expired. If your registration period has ended and you drive, you’re in violation.

Most Wisconsin registrations are annual and expire on the last day of the month shown on your sticker. Motorcycles, mopeds, low-speed vehicles, and light farm trucks are registered biennially, with motorcycles and mopeds expiring at the end of April in even years and light farm plates expiring at the end of February.²

One useful boundary: the statute only prohibits operating an unregistered vehicle on public roads. A vehicle sitting on private property doesn’t need active registration.

The 31-Day Impoundment Line

Here’s the detail that matters most if you’re searching for a grace period. Wisconsin Statute 341.65 lets law enforcement immobilize or tow any “unregistered motor vehicle” found on a highway, but it defines an unregistered vehicle as one not displaying valid registration for the current period or for a period that expired within the immediately preceding 31 days.³ A vehicle whose registration expired fewer than 31 days ago isn’t “unregistered” for impoundment purposes.

If your tags expired last week, an officer can still write you a citation. What the officer cannot do is tow your vehicle solely for the expired registration. Once you cross the 31-day mark, your vehicle becomes eligible for impoundment from any public road, and recovering it typically costs hundreds of dollars in towing and storage fees on top of the ticket. That line is not a grace period that makes driving legal. It is worth knowing anyway.

What a Citation Costs

The forfeiture for operating an unregistered automobile or a vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or less is up to $200. For heavier vehicles, the maximum is $500.⁴ Local court costs and fees stack on top of the base forfeiture, so the total you actually pay is usually higher than the statutory figure. This is a non-moving violation, so it doesn’t add demerit points to your driving record.

Beyond the fine, the court will order you to register the vehicle and pay the registration fee. If the DMV doesn’t receive your registration application and fee within 45 days of conviction, it sends a formal order. Ignore that order for another 20 days and the DMV can suspend every vehicle registration you hold, not just the one that lapsed.⁴ The suspension stays in place until you register and pay. Driving on a suspended registration is a separate and more serious violation, so what looked like a minor lapse can compound quickly.

What It Costs to Renew Late

The annual registration fee for a standard automobile is $85 as of October 2025. Light trucks at 4,500 or 6,000 pounds run $100, and trucks at 8,000 pounds cost $116.60.⁵

A few additional charges can apply:

Wheel tax. Dozens of Wisconsin municipalities charge an annual local vehicle fee ranging from $10 to $50, collected by the DMV with your state registration. Madison and Janesville charge $40, Milwaukee charges $41, and Eau Claire charges $50, while smaller communities may charge as little as $10.⁶
Hybrid surcharge of $75 per year for hybrid electric vehicles.
Electric vehicle surcharge of $175 per year for fully electric vehicles.⁵
Late fee of $10 if you renew after your expiration date. This applies to automobiles, light trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds. Vehicles registered over 8,000 pounds are exempt.⁷

The late fee is $10 no matter how long you’ve been expired. Total renewal of a standard automobile with a lapsed registration in most municipalities runs somewhere between $95 and $135. Far cheaper than a single citation.

How to Get Legal Fast

Wisconsin offers three renewal channels. If your tags are already expired, only two of them get you proof of registration quickly.

Online

Online is the fastest option. You need your plate number, an email address, and a payment method. The WisDOT portal accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, and direct transfers from a checking or savings account. Paying from a bank account avoids the convenience fee that applies to cards and PayPal. After you pay, you receive an email confirmation that serves as proof of current registration, and the DMV mails the new sticker and certificate within 7 to 10 business days.⁸ Keep that email handy in case you get stopped before the sticker arrives.

In Person

Visit a DMV customer service center that handles registration or an authorized renewal service provider. In-person locations hand you a new sticker and certificate on the spot.⁸ If your tags are already expired, this is the safest option because you walk out with everything you need. Authorized third-party agents may charge an additional service fee.

Without the Renewal Notice

You don’t need the paper notice. Online renewal only requires your plate number, and for in-person renewal you can use the paper MV1 application form, available as a download from the WisDOT website or at DMV offices.⁹

Emissions Testing Can Block Renewal

If your vehicle is kept in Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, or Waukesha County, the DMV will not process your renewal until the vehicle passes an emissions test. Testing is required every other year at renewal time.¹⁰

The requirement covers gasoline, natural gas, and hybrid vehicles from model years 1996 through 2006 with a gross weight rating under 8,501 pounds, and diesel, gasoline, natural gas, and hybrid vehicles from 2007 and newer with a gross weight rating up to 14,000 pounds. The three newest model years are exempt. If your vehicle isn’t drivable, you can request a temporary exemption using form MV2472.¹⁰ Schedule the test promptly if you need one, since wait times can add days. Once you pass, renew online or in person the same day.

If You Were on Active Duty When Your Tags Expired

Wisconsin gives active-duty military members real relief that other drivers don’t get. If your plates expired while you were on active duty and you weren’t using the vehicle, you can pay a prorated renewal fee based only on the time remaining in the registration period. No late fee applies. Complete form MV2016 (Substitute Renewal Notice/Non-Operation Statement) and include a copy of your active-duty orders.¹¹

If an emissions test is required but your vehicle is stationed out of state, you can take the test at an out-of-state facility and send the results to the DMV. The results need to show the VIN and a passing result. If there’s no testing facility where you’re stationed, you can request an exemption.¹¹

The Bottom Line if Your Tags Just Expired

Renew online right now if you can. The email confirmation gives you something to show an officer while the physical sticker is in the mail. Inside the first 31 days you face citation risk but not impoundment risk, which is the narrow window to fix things without a tow bill. Automated license plate readers on patrol vehicles and at fixed locations photograph and check plates against registration databases in real time, so expired tags can get flagged without an officer ever looking at your sticker. Avoid driving the vehicle until you’ve renewed if you have any other option.
