The Jackson Parish sales tax runs 4% in unincorporated areas and 5% inside the parish’s incorporated towns, stacking onto Louisiana’s 5% state rate for a combined 9% or 10% depending on where the sale takes place.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Jackson Parish These rates took effect July 1, 2025, after the state portion rose to 5% on January 1, 2025 under Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session.2Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission. Rate by Location
The local portion depends on the exact address of the sale, not just the parish line.
In unincorporated rural areas of Jackson Parish, the School Board levies 3% and the Police Jury levies 1%. Local total: 4%. Combined with the state’s 5%, the rate at the register is 9%.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Jackson Parish
Inside the parish’s incorporated towns, the local portion climbs to 5% and the combined rate to 10%. The internal breakdown varies:
- Jonesboro: 2% School Board, 1% Police Jury, 2% municipal.
- Hodge, North Hodge, East Hodge, Chatham, and Eros: 3% School Board, 1% Police Jury, 1% municipal.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Jackson Parish
If you collect at the wrong rate because you looked at an old chart, you still owe the correct amount, and underpayment penalties follow. Louisiana rate changes can only take effect on the first day of a calendar quarter,3Justia. Louisiana Code RS 47:337.5 – Local Sales and Use Taxes Effective Date so checking the LATA rate table at the start of each quarter is a reliable habit.
What the Tax Applies To
Sales tax covers sales of physical goods, leases, and rentals within Jackson Parish, along with certain services. Hotel and motel room rentals and repairs to physical goods are specifically taxable.4Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:338.173 – Jackson Parish Police Jury Authority to Levy Additional Sales Tax
Use tax closes the obvious gap. When you buy an item outside the parish or from an out-of-state seller who doesn’t collect Louisiana tax, and then bring it into Jackson Parish to store or use, you owe use tax at the same rate as the sales tax would have been.5Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:302 – Imposition of Tax If you already paid sales tax to another jurisdiction on the same item, Louisiana allows a credit so the item isn’t taxed twice.
Exemptions and Resale Certificates
Prescription drugs purchased through Medicare Part B and Part D plans are exempt from all local sales taxes statewide, and other prescription medications receive exemptions under specific state law provisions.6Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.9 – Exemptions From Local Tax
Beyond those mandatory exemptions, Louisiana parishes can choose which optional exemptions to adopt, such as food for home consumption and agricultural inputs. Whether Jackson Parish has adopted any particular optional exemption is a question for the Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency directly, because the LATA page itself refers taxpayers to the parish office for current detail.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Jackson Parish
Whatever exemption you claim, keep the paperwork. During an audit, an exempt sale without documentation becomes a taxable sale with interest.
If you buy inventory for resale, use a Louisiana Resale Exemption Certificate (Form R-1064) to purchase tax-free from your supplier. Any Louisiana dealer registered to buy and sell tangible goods qualifies. The certificate is issued automatically when you register a new business, and existing businesses apply or renew through the Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point.7Louisiana Department of Revenue. Who Qualifies for a Louisiana Resale Certificate Using a resale certificate for personal purchases is fraud and shows up in audits.
Filing Your Return
Every dealer in Jackson Parish files a Parish Sales and Use Tax Report with the Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency. The return covers the previous calendar month and is due on or before the 20th of the following month.8Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.18 – Returns and Payment of Tax Postmarked after the 20th counts as delinquent.9Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency. Jackson Parish Sales Tax Sales and Use Tax Report
Smaller operations get relief. If your average tax due is less than $30 per month, you can file quarterly, with returns due by the 20th of the first month of the next quarter.8Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.18 – Returns and Payment of Tax
On the return, report total gross sales for the period, subtract exempt sales, non-taxable labor, and other permitted deductions, and apply the correct local rate for your jurisdiction to the net taxable amount. The rate in Jonesboro is not the rate in rural Jackson Parish, so your location coding matters.
How to File and Pay
Electronic filing through the Louisiana Uniform Local Sales Tax Board portal at salestaxportal.com is the fastest route and gives you an immediate confirmation of receipt, which is your proof of timely filing if anything is later disputed.10Louisiana Uniform Local Sales Tax Board. For paper filing, mail the return and payment to the Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency, P.O. Box 666, Jonesboro, LA 71251. The office is at 319 Jimmie Davis Blvd in Jonesboro, phone (318) 259-5016, email hmorris@jpstca.org.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Jackson Parish Postmark date determines whether a mailed return meets the deadline.
Before you can file at all, you need a local sales tax account with the Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency. That same office issues the account number and handles disputes.
Penalties, Interest, and Vendor Compensation
Late filing costs 5% of the tax due for the first 30 days of delinquency and another 5% for each additional 30 days or fraction of a period, up to a maximum of 25%.11Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 47:1602 – Penalty for Failure to Make Timely Return Interest runs on top at 1% per month, or any fraction of a month, from the original due date until paid.9Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency. Jackson Parish Sales Tax Sales and Use Tax Report On $5,000 owed and filed two months late, that’s $500 in penalty and $100 in interest before you touch the tax itself.
Pay on time, in full, and you earn vendor’s compensation of 0.84% of the tax due, capped at $750 per dealer per month across all locations in the parish. Claim it as a deduction on the return. One late payment and you lose it for that period.12Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.18 – Returns and Payment of Tax
Audits and the 60-Day Assessment Deadline
Keep records of all taxable and exempt sales, purchases, and leases for at least three years. If the collector has issued an assessment, keep the records until the assessment is paid or canceled.13Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.37 – Retention of Records by Taxpayers Records include register tapes, invoices, resale certificates from your buyers, exemption documentation, and your own purchase records for use tax.
If the Jackson Parish Sales Tax Collection Agency audits you and disputes what you reported, you receive a formal Notice of Assessment. From the date of that notice, you have exactly 60 days to do one of three things:
- Pay the assessment in full.
- Appeal to the Board of Tax Appeals for a redetermination.
- Pay under protest and then file suit or petition the Board of Tax Appeals for a refund.14Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.51 – Notice of Assessment
Miss those 60 days and the assessment becomes final. Appeal rights are gone and the collector can enforce through liens and seizures. This deadline catches more businesses than any filing deadline does.
Remote Sellers Shipping Into Jackson Parish
A business with no physical presence in Louisiana still has to collect once its gross revenue from deliveries into the state exceeds $100,000 in the current or immediately preceding calendar year. Only direct sales count toward the threshold; sales through a marketplace may be excluded because the marketplace itself handles the collection.
Once you cross the threshold, register with the Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers within 30 days and begin collecting no later than 60 days after. Remote sellers register with the commission, not with the Jackson Parish office, and the commission distributes the local share to the parishes and municipalities.
