Jersey Company Tax Return: 0/10 Rates, Deadlines, and Filing

Every company that is incorporated in Jersey or tax-resident there must file a Jersey company tax return with Revenue Jersey each year, whether or not it owes any tax. The deadline is midnight on 30 November in the year after the year of assessment, and missing it triggers an automatic £300 penalty.1Government of Jersey. Applying for a Late Return Penalty to Be Cancelled or Waived Because most Jersey companies fall under the 0% rate, owners often assume there is nothing to file. Filing is a legal duty separate from paying, and the penalties for skipping it stack up quickly.

Which Companies Have to File

The Income Tax (Jersey) Law 1961 sets who is inside the system.2Jersey Legal Information Board. Income Tax (Jersey) Law 1961 A company is Jersey-resident if it is incorporated on the island, or if its central management and control sit there. Central management and control usually means the place where the board meets and takes strategic decisions, not where daily operations happen. A company incorporated in London but run entirely from St. Helier is a Jersey tax resident.

Non-resident companies can still have to file. A company operating through a permanent establishment (a branch) in Jersey is taxed on the profits of that branch. A non-resident company earning income from Jersey real property is taxed at 20% on that income however the property is held. In either case, a return goes to Revenue Jersey even though the company is neither incorporated nor managed on the island.

Tax Rates Under the 0/10 Regime

Jersey’s corporate tax runs on the so-called 0/10 regime. The standard rate for most companies is 0%: report the results, owe nothing. Two categories pay more.

  • Regulated financial services companies with a permanent establishment in Jersey pay 10%. This covers banks, fund administrators, and other firms conducting regulated financial business on the island.
  • Utility companies, income from Jersey real property, and large corporate retailers pay 20%. For retailers, the 20% rate applies once profits chargeable to tax exceed £750,000.3Government of Jersey. Large Corporate Retailers Guidance Notes

The 0% rate is not an exemption or an incentive. It is the standard rate, and a 0% company carries every filing duty a 10% or 20% company carries. The only difference is what is owed after the return is processed.

The Deadline and Late-Filing Penalties

The filing deadline for every Jersey company return is midnight on 30 November in the year after the year of assessment.4Government of Jersey. Company Tax Payment Dates For the 2025 assessment year, the return is due by 30 November 2026. Before the 2022 year of assessment the deadline was 31 December, so older guidance can show the wrong date.

Late-filing penalties come in two stages.1Government of Jersey. Applying for a Late Return Penalty to Be Cancelled or Waived

  • An immediate £300 penalty, applied automatically the moment the deadline passes without a filed return.
  • An additional £100 per month, charged if the return is still outstanding three months after the deadline, up to nine months.

The worst case for a single unfiled return is £300 plus nine months at £100, or £1,200. For a company on the 0% rate, that is £1,200 in penalties on a return that would have shown no tax due. Revenue Jersey does consider applications to waive penalties in some circumstances, but the bar is high and relief is not automatic.

What the Return Contains

A Jersey company return is built from the same records you would prepare for any corporate reporting cycle. You need at least a profit and loss account and a balance sheet covering the accounting period, which normally aligns with the calendar year unless Revenue Jersey has approved something else.

Every company has a Tax Identification Number (TIN) issued on incorporation or registration.5OECD. Jersey Information on Tax Identification Numbers Overseas companies that migrate their tax residency to Jersey or are managed there get one too. The TIN links every filing to the company’s record.

The return reports net profit or loss with adjustments for items Jersey tax law treats differently from ordinary accounting. The most common adjustment is depreciation: Jersey does not allow accounting depreciation as a deduction. Instead, you claim capital allowances, which give tax relief at set rates on qualifying assets. Plant and machinery qualifies at 25% a year. Buildings generally do not qualify, though plant and machinery inside a building can be claimed separately.6Government of Jersey. Capital Allowances for Tax Explained Most of the preparation work sits in getting these adjustments right.

Financial accounts and statements go in alongside the return. The Comptroller of Revenue specifies which documents each entity must attach, and they are uploaded as PDFs through the portal.7Government of Jersey. Corporate Tax Return Guidance Notes Section 9

Filing Through the Online Portal

Returns are filed electronically through the Revenue Jersey online portal. You log in with a User ID and password. If either is lost you have to contact the Revenue Jersey helpdesk to regain access; there is no self-service reset.

The portal walks through entering financial data, attaching documents, and reviewing before submission. Before you can submit, you confirm the information is true, complete, and correct to the best of your knowledge.7Government of Jersey. Payment Dates for 10% and 20% Companies

A company that actually owes tax has payment deadlines on top of the filing deadline. Jersey splits the bill into two.4Government of Jersey. Company Tax Payment Dates

  • An instalment on account of 50% of estimated liability, due by 31 May.
  • The balance, due by 30 November.

Large remitters face earlier dates. A large remitter is broadly a company whose tax liability exceeded £500,000 in each of the two years before the current assessment year. For them, the instalment is due by 31 March and the balance by 30 September. Missing a payment deadline can bring a separate late-payment penalty, though Revenue Jersey may waive it on application.

Other Annual Obligations That Sit Alongside the Return

Filing the tax return does not clear every yearly duty. Two others catch companies out.

Economic Substance

Since 2019, the Taxation (Companies – Economic Substance) (Jersey) Law 2019 has required companies earning income from certain activities to show real presence on the island.8Jersey Legal Information Board. Taxation (Companies – Economic Substance) (Jersey) Law 2019 The relevant activities are banking, insurance, fund management, finance and leasing, headquarters, shipping, holding company business, intellectual property holding, and distribution and service centre.

If your company earns gross income from any of these during its financial period, it must pass the substance test: directed and managed in Jersey (board meetings held on-island with a physical quorum), core income-generating activities carried out in Jersey, and adequate employees, expenditure, and physical assets on the island. Outsourcing is allowed if the company supervises the outsourced work and that work still happens in Jersey. A first failure can bring a fine of up to £10,000, and a subsequent failure up to £100,000. The Comptroller can also exchange information about the failure with tax authorities in other jurisdictions.

GST

Jersey charges Goods and Services Tax at a standard rate of 5% on most goods and services provided or imported into the island.9Government of Jersey. GST Taxed on Goods and Services GST is separate from corporate income tax with its own registration and returns. A company must register for GST if its taxable supplies reached £300,000 or more in the previous 12 months, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe they will exceed £300,000 in the coming 12 months.10Government of Jersey. GST Registration Thresholds Taxable supplies include both standard-rated and zero-rated supplies, and services received from outside Jersey count toward the threshold. A 0% corporate income tax rate does nothing to relieve the GST obligation once turnover crosses the line.

A Note for US Owners

If you are a US citizen or resident who owns or controls a Jersey company, the Jersey filing does not cover your US obligations. A US person owning 10% or more of a foreign corporation’s stock generally has to file Form 5471 with their federal return, with the category and schedules depending on the level of ownership, and penalties starting at $10,000 per return.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 5471 A financial interest in or signature authority over a foreign account, including a Jersey company account, can trigger an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) once aggregate foreign account values exceed $10,000 at any point in the year.12FinCEN. Report Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts Form 8938 under FATCA can also apply, with thresholds that vary by filing status and whether you live in the US or abroad.13Internal Revenue Service. Do I Need to File Form 8938 These forms overlap without replacing one another, and none of them is filed with Revenue Jersey.
