Both Job Corps centers in Georgia — Turner Job Corps Center in Albany and Brunswick Job Corps Center on the coast — are open and taking students. Federal funding runs through at least June 30, 2027, after Congress rejected a 2025 attempt by the U.S. Department of Labor to shut the national program down and federal courts blocked the closures while the appropriations fight played out.1National Job Corps Association. What Happened in 2025
If you’ve heard that Job Corps was closing, that’s where the confusion comes from. On May 29, 2025, the Department of Labor announced a “phased pause” at all 99 contractor-operated Job Corps centers nationwide, with full cessation set for June 30, 2025. Both Georgia centers were on the list. Turner students were told to vacate as early as the following week; Brunswick was ordered to empty student housing by June 6.9U.S. Department of Labor. Two federal lawsuits stopped the closures. In National Job Corps Association v. Department of Labor, filed June 3, 2025 in the Southern District of New York, the court issued a temporary restraining order the next day and a preliminary injunction on June 25, finding the Department had tried to shut down centers without following the procedures required by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.11Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse. Congress then settled the funding question. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, signed into law on February 3, 2026, provided roughly $1.76 billion for Job Corps — the same level as the prior year — and added new legal protections that prohibit large-scale campus closures and impose specific requirements before any individual center can be shuttered.13Office of Sen. Enrollment Disruption to Expect
The shutdown attempt left a practical mark on the pipeline. The Department of Labor stopped processing applicant background checks between March and September 2025, and enrollment across the program dropped sharply during that window. Centers were still rebuilding enrollment into early 2026.15NW Labor Press.
