What Happened in Ansonia
In the early morning hours of December 1, 2019, Morales attacked Holloway inside her Myrtle Avenue home in Ansonia. Trial evidence established that he struck her head at least eight times with an instrument, causing severe skull fractures and fatal blunt force trauma.3Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice. Jose Morales Sentencing Press Release Prosecutors said he then spent roughly 37 hours cleaning the scene and destroying evidence before leaving her body naked in the bathtub.
Holloway, 43, was a daycare educator in Bridgeport. When she failed to report to work on December 2, her employer and family both asked for a welfare check. Morales gave officers inconsistent statements, and police forced entry into the home at about 8:15 p.m., finding her body.4News 12 Connecticut. Vanessa Morales Was Already Gone
Vanessa was last seen by family members on November 29, 2019. When officers reached the home three days later, she was not there, and several of her belongings were also missing, including a car seat, a diaper bag, and a teething ring.5Charley Project. Vanessa Morales
Police identified Morales as a suspect in the child’s disappearance almost immediately because he was the last person known to have been with both Holloway and Vanessa. He has never been charged in connection with her disappearance.6CBS News. Jose Morales Christine Holloway Connecticut Murder Sentencing Authorities have said they believe she may still be alive.
How Investigators Built the Case
Morales was first held on unrelated charges. When police searched his New Haven home on December 3, 2019, they found two stun guns. Because he was a convicted felon, possessing them was a felony, and he was arrested and held on $250,000 bail while investigators spent two months building the murder case.7New Haven Register. The physical and digital evidence was extensive. Blood on Morales’s sneakers tested positive for Holloway’s DNA. A trash bag inside the trunk of his car also carried her blood. Cell phone records placed him at the Ansonia residence during the hours surrounding the killing and tracked his movements toward areas where evidence was later discarded.4News 12 Connecticut. Workers later pulled bloodstained items from that bin, including a diaper pail, a towel containing tissue-like material, children’s books, a puzzle, and an envelope of bank mail addressed to Holloway. A central piece of evidence was a 911 call placed from Morales’s phone at 1:52 a.m. on December 1, 2019. The caller spoke in a slurred voice and repeated “Myrtle Avenue” without giving a specific address. In the background, a woman’s voice could be heard saying “Stop,” “Hang up,” and “Who are you talking to?” Prosecutors contended this was Holloway’s voice, captured shortly before her death.9News 12 Connecticut. The Trial

Morales took the stand with a different account. He told jurors he had smoked PCP about ten minutes before entering the apartment, and that two unknown intruders broke in, one striking Holloway with a crowbar while the other kidnapped Vanessa. He said the intruders threatened to kill his daughter if he called police. He admitted to cleaning the scene, dumping bloody items in the donation bin, and moving Holloway’s body into the bathtub because he “didn’t want nobody to see her like that.”13News 12 Long Island. Defense attorney Edward Gavin argued the cleanup did not prove his client killed Holloway, pointed out that no murder weapon was ever recovered, and told jurors, “Who calls 911 before committing a homicide? No one.”14NBC Connecticut. Closing Arguments Expected in Trial of Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend in Ansonia Prosecutor Howard Stein countered that the medical evidence of eight separate impacts contradicted Morales’s claim the intruder struck Holloway only three times, and noted Morales had driven past a police station while discarding evidence and never sought help.

The 65-Year Sentence
On July 14, 2025, Judge Murphy sentenced Morales to 60 years for murder and a consecutive five years for tampering with evidence. The defense had asked for 35 years. The judge called the crime “vicious” and told Morales: “You are a dangerous person, a significant threat to society, and you need to be removed from the community for a substantial period of time.”6CBS News. Holloway’s aunt, Anna Rodonski, delivered a victim impact statement describing the trauma of cleaning the murder scene and the family’s search for Vanessa. “What was done to my niece, Christine Holloway, is unforgivable and disgusting, and that monster continues to lie,” she said. “Where is Vanessa? Appeal to the Connecticut Supreme Court
Gavin filed a motion for a new trial, which Judge Murphy denied. On September 9, 2025, Morales filed an appeal with the Connecticut Supreme Court. Public defender Jennifer Bourn is handling the appeal and has indicated the challenge may include alleged errors in jury instructions and evidentiary rulings, including the trial court’s decision to allow evidence related to Vanessa’s disappearance, which the defense argues prejudiced the jury. Bourn has requested more than 4,300 pages of court transcripts, and both sides will submit legal briefs before the court schedules oral arguments.17Valley Independent.
