Juneteenth is a legal state holiday in Connecticut, and in 2026 it falls on Friday, June 19, so the state observes it on the actual date. On Juneteenth in Connecticut, what’s closed includes state agencies, courts, banks, and post offices; what stays open includes public buses, liquor stores, and most retail. Private employers are not required to give you the day off.
What Closes
State Government Offices
State agencies close on June 19. Connecticut’s State Personnel Act requires every full-time permanent state employee to receive paid time off on any legal holiday.1Justia. Connecticut Code 5-254 – Holidays That covers the DMV, Department of Labor offices, and other public-facing branches. The Connecticut Department of Banking lists Juneteenth Day on June 19, 2026, on its official state holiday calendar.2State of Connecticut Department of Banking. 2026 State Holidays If you need to renew a license or handle in-person state business, schedule around it.
Banks and Credit Unions
Connecticut law ties bank holidays directly to the legal holidays listed in the state’s holiday statute. The Governor designates these as bank and credit union holidays, and banking transactions are generally suspended.3Justia. Connecticut Code 36a-23 – Bank and Credit Union Holidays Local branches are closed on June 19. ATMs and online banking still work.
Courts
Federal and state courts in Connecticut both close on Juneteenth. The federal District of Connecticut lists Juneteenth National Independence Day on its 2026 schedule. If a filing deadline lands on June 19, it automatically rolls to the next business day under the federal rules, which name Juneteenth as a legal holiday.4Legal Information Institute (LII). Rule 6 – Computing and Extending Time; Time for Motion Papers Connecticut state courts follow the same practice for state holidays.
Post Offices and Mail
The U.S. Postal Service observes Juneteenth as one of its 11 annual holidays. Post offices are closed and regular mail is not delivered on June 19. USPS.com stays available.
What Stays Open
Plenty keeps running. CTtransit, the state public bus system, operates its regular weekday schedule on Juneteenth rather than a reduced holiday schedule.5CTtransit. Holiday Service Schedule
Liquor stores and package stores can operate normally. Connecticut restricts off-premises alcohol sales on only three holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Juneteenth is not one of them.
Retail stores and restaurants are free to open. Connecticut’s older holiday commerce restrictions apply only to New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and even that statute’s enforceability is uncertain after the state Supreme Court’s ruling in the related Sunday-closing case.6Connecticut General Assembly. Holiday Employment Laws Juneteenth carries no retail restrictions.
Public Schools
Each local and regional board of education decides on its own whether to close schools on Juneteenth. The state does not require it. If a district does hold class, it must run a nonsectarian educational program recognizing the day.7Justia. Connecticut Code 1-4 – Days Designated as Legal Holidays In most Connecticut districts, June 19 already falls in summer break, so the question rarely surfaces.
Financial Markets and Wire Transfers
The Federal Reserve lists Juneteenth National Independence Day on June 19, 2026, as a holiday, so Fedwire and ACH settlement services do not operate that day.8Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq also close. If you’re expecting a wire or planning a trade around that date, add a business day.
Does Your Employer Have to Give You the Day Off?
No. Neither Connecticut law nor federal law requires private employers to give you a paid day off on Juneteenth. The Fair Labor Standards Act does not mandate holiday pay or premium rates for working on any federal holiday, and Connecticut has no state-level holiday pay requirement. Whether you get the day off, receive extra pay, or work a normal shift depends on your employer’s policies, your employment contract, or a collective bargaining agreement.
The employer’s own paperwork is where to look. If a handbook or contract promises paid time off on “all state holidays” or uses similar wording, the addition of Juneteenth to Connecticut’s legal holiday list in 2022 may have expanded what you’re owed. Read that language carefully. Any obligation flows from the policy, not the statute.
Overtime rules apply the ordinary way. If working on Juneteenth pushes a non-exempt employee past 40 hours for the week, the employer owes time-and-a-half on the excess. That obligation comes from the weekly-hours threshold, not from the holiday.
Why June 19
Governor Ned Lamont signed Public Act 22-128 on May 27, 2022, adding June 19 to Connecticut’s list of legal holidays.9Connecticut General Assembly. Connecticut Code 1-4 – Days Designated as Legal Holidays In 2026, June 19 is a Friday, so the observance stays on the date itself.
