Kansas REAL ID Requirements, Fees, and How to Apply

A Kansas REAL ID is a driver’s license or state ID card marked with a gold star in the upper right corner, and getting one means an in-person visit to a Kansas driver’s licensing office with original documents proving your identity, Social Security number, and Kansas address. Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so you now need a gold-star card or another approved federal ID to board a domestic flight, enter most federal buildings, or visit a military base.1Transportation Security Administration. Do You Actually Need One

REAL ID applies only to federal purposes: flying domestically, entering a federal facility that checks ID at the door, and accessing a military base as a visitor.2USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel A standard Kansas license still lets you drive, buy age-restricted products, and vote. Kansas election law accepts any state-issued driver’s license or ID card as valid photo identification at the polls, gold star or not.3Kansas Secretary of State. Photo ID

A U.S. passport or passport card also satisfies the federal ID requirement at every TSA checkpoint. So does a Department of Defense military ID, a permanent resident card, and a DHS trusted traveler card like Global Entry or NEXUS.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you already carry a passport when you fly, upgrading your license is optional.

Documents to Bring

Kansas requires originals or certified copies in four categories. Photocopies, printouts, and laminated cards are not accepted.6Kansas Department of Revenue. Kansas Real ID

Proof of Identity and Lawful Presence

You need one document. For U.S. citizens, the common options are a certified state-issued birth certificate or an unexpired U.S. passport. A certificate of naturalization or a consular report of birth abroad also qualifies.5Kansas Department of Revenue. Kansas Real ID Non-citizens can present a valid permanent resident card, employment authorization card, I-94 for asylees and refugees, or an unexpired foreign passport with a valid U.S. entry marking; the office runs a SAVE verification to confirm immigration status electronically.7Kansas Department of Revenue. Social Security Number

Bring one document showing your full number. An original, unlaminated Social Security card is the cleanest option. Kansas also accepts a current W-2, a 1099, or a current pay stub that shows the full number.8Kansas Department of Revenue. Real ID Frequently Asked Questions If you have lost your card, request a replacement from the Social Security Administration before your appointment.

Two Proofs of Kansas Residency

You need two separate documents showing your current physical address, dated within the last year. A utility bill, bank statement, vehicle registration, lease or rental agreement, mortgage document, or renewal postcard will each work.9Kansas Department of Revenue. Kansas Real ID A P.O. Box does not count.

Name Change Documentation

If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, bring legal proof of every change linking the two. Certified marriage certificates, court-ordered divorce decrees restoring a former name, adoption paperwork, or other court-ordered name change documents will do.8Kansas Department of Revenue. Real ID Frequently Asked Questions Multiple changes require documentation for the full chain. This is the step that trips people up. Find those old marriage certificates before the visit, not during it.

Applying at the Licensing Office

A first-time REAL ID application must be done in person, even if you would otherwise qualify for online renewal.10Kansas Department of Revenue. Appointment Information The Kansas Department of Revenue uses an online tool called “Get In Line” to schedule appointments at local stations, and booking ahead cuts your wait significantly.11Kansas Department of Revenue. At the office a technician reviews and scans your originals. You take a new photo that meets federal biometric standards, and you complete a vision screening; Kansas requires visual acuity of at least 20/40, so bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.12Kansas Department of Revenue. Medical/Vision Review Information

You leave with a temporary paper permit valid for 60 days. Kansas does not print cards on-site. The permanent gold-star card is produced at a secure off-site facility and mailed to your verified address, which generally takes 14 to 45 days.13iKan. What It Costs

Kansas driver’s license fees are set by statute.14Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Statutes 8-243 – Issuance of Licenses What you pay depends on whether you are renewing, upgrading mid-cycle, or applying at a different age.15Kansas Department of Revenue. Kansas Credential Fee Chart

  • Standard renewal, ages 21 to 64: $26 total ($18 issuance plus $8 photo), for a six-year license.
  • Adding REAL ID to a valid, unexpired license: $8, covering the new photo.
  • Renewal for drivers over 64: $20 total.
  • Renewal for drivers under 21: $11 total.

Some county treasurer offices that process applications add a small county service fee, and credit card payments carry a vendor convenience fee that the Department of Revenue does not set or receive.16Kansas Department of Revenue. Frequently Asked Questions About Credit Card Payments If your renewal is coming up anyway, adding the REAL ID during that visit costs nothing beyond the standard fee. Upgrading before expiration runs only $8.

Children Do Not Need One

Children under 18 traveling with an adult do not need any ID to board a domestic flight, and the federal REAL ID requirement for TSA checkpoints and federal buildings applies only to adults 18 and older.17Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities There is no reason to get a REAL ID for a child unless they need a Kansas ID card for something else.
