  • License number, if you have it. This is the fastest way to pull up a single record.
  • First and last name. Partial spellings work, which helps when you’re unsure of an exact name.
  • License type, chosen from a dropdown (LBSW-Permanent, LMSW-Permanent, LSCSW-Permanent, and other designations).
  • License status, chosen from a dropdown (Active, Expired, Revoked, Suspended, and more).
  • City, state, county, or zip code.

What the License Type Tells You

Kansas issues three main social work licenses, and the type shown in a verification result tells you what a practitioner is authorized to do.

  • A Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited program and has passed the bachelor’s-level exam. LBSWs provide non-clinical services.4KS BSRB. Social Workers
  • A Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) holds a master’s in social work and has passed the master’s-level exam. An LMSW can provide a broader range of services but cannot independently diagnose or treat mental disorders.4KS BSRB. Social Workers
  • A Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW) holds a master’s or doctorate in social work, has completed 3,000 hours of supervised post-graduate clinical experience, and has passed the clinical-level exam. Kansas also issues temporary candidacy licenses at the baccalaureate and master levels. If you are looking for a therapist, the practical rule is simple: independent therapy and diagnosis require an LSCSW. An LBSW or LMSW offering to diagnose or treat a mental health condition without clinical-level supervision is practicing outside their authorized scope.

What the Status Field Means

The status line is the single most important part of a verification record. The values you are most likely to see:

  • Active. Requirements are met and the practitioner is currently authorized to practice.
  • Active – Renewal Pending. The license period has ended and a renewal application is on file but not yet processed. Common during the renewal window.
  • Expired. The license has lapsed and does not authorize practice.
  • Suspended. The board has temporarily removed the authority to practice, often in connection with a disciplinary matter.
  • Revoked. The board has permanently withdrawn the license.
  • Surrendered. The practitioner voluntarily gave up the license, sometimes tied to a disciplinary matter.
  • Inactive. The practitioner has chosen not to maintain active status and is not authorized to practice.

Each record also shows the original issuance date and the current expiration date, so you can see whether the license has been maintained over time. A brief gap between expiration and renewal isn’t necessarily a warning sign; a long lapse followed by reinstatement is worth asking about.

Checking for Disciplinary Actions

An “Active” status doesn’t guarantee a clean record. The BSRB publishes formal disciplinary actions on a separate page of its main website, organized alphabetically by last name.6KS BSRB. Disciplinary Actions Board orders, consent agreements, and other enforcement actions appear there even if the license was later reinstated or is currently active with conditions.

Check both places. A practitioner can hold an active license today and still have a prior suspension or consent agreement in their history. The disciplinary page is the only route to that information without filing a formal records request.

Federal Checks Worth Adding

The BSRB portal is the authority on state licensure. Two federal databases add useful context, especially if the social worker will bill insurance or a government program.

NPI Registry

The National Provider Identifier Registry, maintained by CMS, assigns a 10-digit number to healthcare providers, including social workers. You can search by name, specialty, or location. The registry itself notes that “issuance of an NPI does not ensure or validate that the Health Care Provider is Licensed or Credentialed.”7NPPES NPI Registry. OIG Exclusions Database

The HHS Office of Inspector General lists individuals excluded from Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal healthcare programs.8Office of Inspector General. Out-of-State and Telehealth Providers

Kansas adopted the Social Work Licensure Compact in April 2024.9National Association of Social Workers. Multistate licenses are not yet being issued. A social worker in another state providing telehealth to a client in Kansas still needs a Kansas license to practice here legally. Verify the Kansas credential directly through the BSRB portal regardless of what other state licenses the provider holds.
