Kansas State Park Pass: Who Needs One, Prices, and Discounts

Every motor vehicle entering a Kansas state park needs a valid park and recreation permit under K.S.A. 32-901, and the cheapest Kansas state park pass for residents is the $15.50 State Park Passport, sold only when you register or renew your vehicle.¹ Other options run from a $5.00 daily permit to a $25.00 standard annual permit, with half-price rates for seniors and people with disabilities who live in Kansas.

Who Needs a Permit

K.S.A. 32-901 requires a valid park and recreation motor vehicle permit for any vehicle used in a Kansas state park or any other area the secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has designated and posted. The permit must be displayed on the vehicle.²

A handful of vehicles are exempt: government-owned vehicles, emergency vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, and private vehicles being used on official government business.² Everyone else pays, resident or not. There is no separate non-resident annual rate; out-of-state visitors buy the same standard annual permit at the same price. The discounted options are limited to Kansas residents.

Permit Types and Current Prices

KDWP sets permit fees through administrative regulation, so prices can change without new legislation. As of 2025, the fee schedule lists these vehicle entry permits:³

Annual Vehicle Permit: $25.00, unlimited entry to all Kansas state parks for the calendar year, non-transferable.
State Park Passport: $15.50, sold only through vehicle registration, good until your registration expires.
Daily Vehicle Permit: $5.00, good for one day at the park where you buy it.
Unconventional Vehicle Permit: $52.50, required for UTVs and golf carts, which are restricted to improved roads and parking areas.
Replacement Permit: $2.50, issued on proof the original was lost.

If you visit a state park more than a few times a year, the annual options pay for themselves quickly against the $5.00 daily rate.

The State Park Passport

The Passport is the cheapest way for a Kansas resident to get a year of park access. You can add it when registering in person at a county motor vehicle office, through the state’s online registration portal at ikan.ks.gov, or when registering by mail.¹ It is not sold at park offices or directly by KDWP.

You have to ask for it. County offices do not offer it automatically. The Passport is tied to your vehicle, non-transferable, and expires when your registration expires, so it runs on your renewal cycle rather than the calendar year.¹

Discounts for Seniors and Persons With Disabilities

K.S.A. 32-901 gives Kansas residents aged 65 or older, and Kansas residents with disabilities who display a qualifying special license plate or placard, half off the standard permit fee.² Under current pricing, that comes to:

Annual Senior or Disabled Permit: $13.75
Daily Senior or Disabled Permit: $3.25

Non-residents in either category pay full price.² To claim the disability rate, you need a placard or plate issued under K.S.A. 8-1,125. For the senior rate, a Kansas driver’s license showing your age is enough.³

Specialty License Plates That Count as a Permit

Drivers who have a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks specialty license plate issued under K.S.A. 8-1,206 do not need a separate vehicle permit. The plate itself functions as an annual park permit as long as the vehicle registration is current and the plate is displayed.² Worth knowing if you already have that plate or are considering one.

Where to Buy

Outside the Passport option at vehicle registration, annual permits are available directly from KDWP, including online. Daily permits are sold at the individual park you plan to visit.³

If you sell or trade a vehicle mid-year, you can surrender your annual permit to KDWP and receive a replacement covering the rest of the calendar year for your new vehicle. Bring proof that you held the original permit and proof of valid title to the new vehicle.²

Camping Costs Are Separate

A vehicle permit gets you through the gate. It does not cover overnight camping. Camping is a separate fee stacked on top of the vehicle permit.³ Current rates:

Daily Camping Permit: $10.00 per night, per camping unit (each tent, RV, or trailer is one unit).
Youth Camping Permit: $4.00 per night, per unit.
14-Night Camping Permit: $112.50 for 14 nights across any state parks during the calendar year, not required to be consecutive.
Annual Camping Permit: $252.50 if bought April 1 through September 30, or $202.50 outside that window.

Water, electricity, and sewer hookups cost extra, from $9.00 per night for one utility to $12.00 per night for three, and prime sites carry a $2.00 nightly surcharge from April through September. A $2.75 processing fee applies to each camping stay.⁴ A weekend at a full-hookup prime site adds up well beyond the base rate.

Free Entry Days

The secretary of KDWP can designate two days each calendar year when motor vehicles enter state parks without a permit. KDWP typically announces these dates on its website. Special permits are also available for sightseeing, church services held in a park, approved events involving news media, and emergency access.²

Federal Passes Do Not Work at Kansas State Parks

The America the Beautiful pass and the federal Lifetime Senior Pass cover entrance fees at more than 2,000 federal recreation areas managed by the National Park Service, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other federal agencies.⁵ Kansas state parks are run by the state, not the federal government, and do not accept federal passes at the gate. Kansas does have federal recreation areas where the pass applies, including portions of national wildlife refuges and Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs, so check which agency manages the specific site before you rely on your pass.

What Happens If You Skip the Permit

Park rangers and law enforcement check for valid permits at entrances and inside park boundaries. Permits are non-transferable, so the permit must match the vehicle it was issued to.² Entering a posted state park without a valid permit displayed is a violation of state law. General penalties for wildlife and parks violations are set in K.S.A. 32-1031, and the amount depends on the specific offense. Displaying a fictitious, cancelled, or altered registration document is an unclassified misdemeanor under K.S.A. 8-142, with a minimum fine of $100, forfeiture of the item, and a mandatory court appearance.⁶ Buying the right permit and displaying it is far cheaper than any of the alternatives.
