Kentucky Driving Test Requirements: Documents, Scoring, and Vehicle

To pass the Kentucky driving test, you need to meet the permit holding period for your age, bring the right identity documents, show up in an insured vehicle that passes a safety inspection, and demonstrate a set of scored maneuvers for a Kentucky State Police examiner. The Kentucky driving test requirements shift depending on whether you’re under 18, 18 to 20, or 21 and older, so the first thing to check is where you stand on the permit clock.

How Long You Must Hold Your Permit First

Kentucky ties road test eligibility to how long you’ve held your instruction permit, and the wait depends on how old you were when you applied.

  • Age 16 or 17: at least 180 days on the permit before the road test. Passing earns you an intermediate license, not a full one.
  • Applied under 18 but now 18: still 180 days on the permit, plus completion of a driver training program before a full operator’s license is issued.
  • Age 18 to 20: 180 days on the permit, then a full license with no intermediate phase.
  • Age 21 and older: 30 days on the permit before you can test.

You can apply for an instruction permit starting at age 15, but no form of operator’s license issues until you turn 16.1Justia Law. Kentucky Code 186.450 – Instruction Permits for Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Applicants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to sign the permit application.

If you’re under 18, one boundary to know before test day: your parent or guardian must certify at least 60 hours of supervised practice driving, including 10 hours at night, before you can move from a learner’s permit to an intermediate license. The supervising driver must be at least 21 and hold a valid operator’s license, and you’ll need a signed practice log.2Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Practice Driving Log

Documents to Bring on Test Day

Bring your valid instruction permit, vehicle registration, proof of Kentucky insurance, and the original identity documents Kentucky requires for licensing. First-time applicants must bring their Social Security card. Not a photocopy.3Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Valid Proof Documents for Kentucky Driver’s Licenses, Permits, and Identification Cards You’ll also need one proof of identity, such as an original or certified birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport.

If your current legal name differs from what’s on your birth certificate, you need documentation connecting the two, such as a certified marriage certificate, a divorce decree granting a name change, or a court order. Your name must already be updated on your Social Security record before you apply.4Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. First Issuance Every document must be an original or certified copy. Photocopies are not accepted for identity or name-change verification.

Vehicle and Insurance Requirements

You provide the vehicle for your road test, and it has to clear a pre-trip inspection before the examiner will get in. You’ll be asked to demonstrate the headlights, turn signals, dimmer switch, emergency brake, horn, emergency flashers, windshield wipers, and brake lights.5Kentucky State Police. The examiner also checks brakes, all exterior lights, mirrors (one on the left side and one either inside the vehicle or on the right), a properly displayed and illuminated license plate, an unobstructed windshield, a working muffler, and functional steering. If any of these fail inspection, you don’t test that day.5Kentucky State Police. Kentucky Driver Manual

Valid registration and proof of Kentucky insurance on the vehicle are required. Kentucky law requires continuous insurance coverage on every registered vehicle in the state, and operating without it carries penalties beyond just losing your test slot.6Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. What the Examiner Scores

The road test is a scored evaluation of actual driving, not a closed-course routine. The examiner rides with you and grades specific maneuvers along with your overall habits.

  • Reverse parking. You’ll drive past a space and back into it, controlling the vehicle at low speed while checking mirrors and blind spots.
  • Backing up. You’ll back the vehicle in a straight line for approximately 50 feet at a slow speed, looking over your right shoulder. Backup cameras are not allowed during the test.
  • Quick stop. At around 20 mph, the examiner will tell you to make a safe, controlled stop.
  • Signaling and turning. You’ll make both left and right turns, positioning in the correct lane and signaling at least 200 feet before the turn.
  • Right-of-way. The examiner watches whether you yield to pedestrians, pull over for emergency vehicles, and avoid entering intersections when traffic prevents you from clearing them.
  • Following distance. Keep at least three to four seconds of space between you and the vehicle ahead.

Along the way, the examiner also evaluates whether you check mirrors before lane changes, hold an appropriate speed for conditions, come to complete stops at stop signs, and obey traffic signals. Scoring is cumulative. A single small error rarely fails you, but enough of them add up. The common trip-ups are the basics: rolling stops, forgotten signals, and inconsistent mirror checks.5Kentucky State Police. Kentucky Driver Manual

Scheduling the Test

Road tests are scheduled through the Kentucky State Police online appointment system. You pick the test type (road test for a standard license) and a testing location.7TeleGovProd. Arrive early on test day. The examiner verifies your paperwork, inspects the vehicle, and then rides with you for the driving portion. Results come immediately after the evaluation.

If You Fail

You must wait at least seven full days before scheduling a retake.8Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. After You Pass

Passing the road test doesn’t put a license in your hand that afternoon. The Kentucky State Police administers the test, but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet issues the credential. You’ll take your passing results to a regional driver licensing office, where staff process the application, collect the license fee, and issue the license.4Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Drivers under 18 receive an intermediate license, not a full one. That license bars driving between midnight and 6:00 a.m. unless you can show good cause such as work, school, or an emergency, and it limits you to no more than one unrelated passenger under 20.9Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. Kentucky Code 186.452 – Intermediate License to Operate a Motor Vehicle A moving traffic violation or conviction during this phase resets the 180-day intermediate clock. Before upgrading to an unrestricted license, you’ll also need to finish an approved driver education course. Kentucky offers a free four-hour classroom course through the Transportation Cabinet, an online course through RightLane for $12.50, or a high school driver education course.
