Kentucky Estimated Tax Payments: Due Dates, Safe Harbor, and Penalties

Kentucky estimated tax payments are quarterly prepayments of state income tax that you owe when more than $500 of your annual Kentucky tax won’t be covered by withholding. The state applies a flat 3.5% rate to taxable income for tax year 2026.1Kentucky Department of Revenue. 2026 Kentucky Withholding Tax Formula If you receive self-employment earnings, business profits, rental income, capital gains, interest, dividends, royalties, or retirement distributions without Kentucky withholding, the four installment deadlines almost certainly apply to you.

Who Has to Pay

Two conditions have to be met before Kentucky requires you to make estimated payments. You must reasonably expect more than $5,000 in gross income from sources where no Kentucky income tax is withheld, and your estimated tax for the year must exceed $500 after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.2Justia Law. Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 141 Section 300 – Declaration of Estimated Tax Miss either one and you don’t have to file quarterly vouchers.

There’s also a full pass for anyone who had zero Kentucky tax liability the prior year, whether because total tax was zero or because you weren’t required to file. In that case, no estimated payments are required for the current year no matter how much you expect to earn.3Kentucky Department of Revenue. Instructions for Filing Estimated Tax Vouchers

Kentucky Estimated Tax Due Dates

Kentucky’s quarterly schedule mirrors the federal one:4Justia Law. Kentucky Code 141.305 – Installment Payments of Estimated Tax

  • April 15, for income earned January 1 through March 31
  • June 15, for income earned April 1 through May 31
  • September 15, for income earned June 1 through August 31
  • January 15 of the following year, for income earned September 1 through December 31

A deadline landing on a weekend or legal holiday moves to the next business day. A timely postmark or electronic timestamp counts as on-time. If you first start receiving non-withheld income partway through the year, your first required payment is whichever quarterly deadline comes next.

How to Figure Each Payment

Project your gross income for the year, subtract the deductions you expect to claim on your Kentucky return, and multiply the taxable income by 3.5%.1Kentucky Department of Revenue. 2026 Kentucky Withholding Tax Formula From that figure, subtract any Kentucky withholding you expect from wages or other payments, plus any refundable credits. Divide the remainder by four. That’s each installment.

Most people find it easier to start from last year’s return and adjust for known changes: a new consulting client, a property sale, a change in filing status. The worksheet on the back of the Form 740-ES instructions walks through the arithmetic.

Safe Harbor Amounts

Two safe harbors protect you from underpayment penalties even if your final tax bill turns out higher than what you paid in. Your combined payments and withholding must equal at least the smaller of:

Higher earners face a stricter version of the prior-year rule. If your Kentucky adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000 in the prior year, or $75,000 if married filing separately, the prior-year safe harbor rises from 100% to 110%. Farmers are exempt from this higher threshold.

How to Submit Your Payments

The Department of Revenue accepts ACH debit payments through revenue.ky.gov. Choose the estimated tax option, enter your banking details, and you get a confirmation number immediately.3Kentucky Department of Revenue. Instructions for Filing Estimated Tax Vouchers

To pay by check or money order, make it payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer, write your Social Security number on the check, and include the Form 740-ES voucher for the correct installment.5Kentucky Department of Revenue. 2026 Individual Income Tax Form 740-ES Mail both to:

Each voucher asks for your name, Social Security number, and payment amount. Joint filers include both spouses on the voucher.

Adjusting Payments When Income Changes

Income rarely arrives in equal quarterly slices. If a big contract lands in the third quarter or you sell a rental in November, rerun the 740-ES worksheet with updated numbers and change the amounts on your remaining vouchers.

For seasonal or highly irregular income, the annualized income installment method can reduce or eliminate a penalty by calculating what you owed for each quarter based on income you actually earned in that period rather than assuming even quarters.6Kentucky Department of Revenue. Kentucky Technical Advice Memorandum KY-TAM-19-02 You claim it on Form 2210-K when you file your annual return.

One useful shortcut: if your income situation shifts after September 1, you can skip the January 15 voucher entirely by filing your Kentucky return and paying all tax due by January 31.3Kentucky Department of Revenue. Instructions for Filing Estimated Tax Vouchers

Farmers and Fishermen

If at least two-thirds of your gross income comes from farming or fishing, in either the current or the prior year, Kentucky lets you skip three of the four vouchers and make a single estimated payment by January 15.7Kentucky Department of Revenue. Kentucky Form 2210-K – Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals The penalty threshold is also gentler: 66⅔% of the current year’s tax instead of 90%.

Non-Residents With Kentucky Income

You don’t have to live in Kentucky to owe estimated tax to Kentucky. The same $500 threshold applies to non-residents earning Kentucky-source income. The most common trigger is a stake in a pass-through entity operating in the state, in which case the entity is generally required to withhold Kentucky tax on your share of the profits.9Kentucky Department of Revenue. Nonresident Withholding Tax Where that withholding falls short of your total Kentucky liability, you make up the difference through Form 740-ES on the same quarterly schedule. Non-residents file their annual return on Form 740-NP.

Underpayment Penalties

When your payments and withholding miss both safe harbors, Kentucky charges a penalty on each quarterly shortfall. The penalty runs separately for each installment period from its due date until the earlier of the payment date or the annual return filing deadline.10Kentucky Department of Revenue. Penalties, Interest and Fees The rate equals the Department’s tax-due interest rate, set at 9% for the 2026 calendar year. There’s no cap, and the Department cannot waive the interest portion because it’s set by statute.

No penalty applies if your total tax minus withholding and refundable credits comes to $500 or less.8Kentucky Department of Revenue. Kentucky Form 2210-K – Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals The Department also waives penalties for estates of a decedent, for qualifying trusts within two years of the decedent’s death, and for farmers who meet the filing deadlines above. Document any exception on Form 2210-K and attach it to your annual return.
