To book a Kentucky REAL ID appointment, go to drive.ky.gov, choose the service you need, pick a Regional Driver Licensing Office, and reserve a date and time. New slots are released weekly, so check back often if your preferred office is booked. First-time REAL ID applicants must appear in person; some renewal-eligible residents can skip the office visit entirely.
Booking Online at drive.ky.gov
Appointments can only be scheduled through the state’s online portal.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Find an Office Start at drive.ky.gov, select the type of service (first-time REAL ID, renewal, replacement, or upgrade), pick a regional office, and choose from the available dates and times.
There are roughly 35 Regional Driver Licensing Offices statewide, from Paducah in the west to Pikeville in the east, with multiple locations in Louisville and Lexington. You can visit any office regardless of which county you live in, so choosing one near work or along a route you already travel is a reasonable strategy. The site has a “Find Nearest Office” tool and a dropdown of every location.1Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Find an Office Louisville and Lexington offices fill fastest; smaller locations like Bardstown or Leitchfield often have earlier availability.
After booking, you’ll get a confirmation email and text with the date, time, location, and a link to cancel or reschedule. On the day of your visit, another text delivers check-in instructions. You can check in from your phone and wait in your car until a follow-up text tells you it’s your turn. If you don’t have a mobile device, check in at a kiosk inside the office or with a staff member and wait in the lobby.
Walk-In Hours
If you can’t get an online appointment, regional offices accept walk-ins during morning hours, typically 8 a.m. to noon. Waits run longer than for scheduled visits because appointment holders are processed first. Arriving early on a weekday gives you the best shot.
What to Bring
Document requirements trip up more applicants than the booking itself. Show up short one item and the visit is wasted, so verify each category before you go.
Proof of Identity
Bring one original or certified document. Photocopies are not accepted. Common options include a U.S. birth certificate issued by a state or territory, a valid U.S. passport, or a U.S. citizenship or naturalization certificate.2DRIVE. What Do I Need to Apply A birth certificate has to be the version bearing an official seal from the issuing government agency.
Proof of Your Social Security Number
Bring one document showing your full Social Security number. First-time applicants must present the actual Social Security card. Renewal applicants can also use a recent W-2, 1099, or paycheck stub showing the full number.3Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Valid Proof Documents for Kentucky Driver’s Licenses, Permits, and Identification Cards The card cannot be laminated, and the name on it must match your current legal name. If your name has changed, update it with the Social Security Administration before you apply.
Name Change Documents
If your current name doesn’t match the name on your birth certificate, bring certified documents linking every name change. A certified marriage certificate is required even if your existing Kentucky license already shows your married name. Certified divorce decrees must specifically show that a name change was granted. Legal name change court orders and a spouse’s death certificate also work.2DRIVE. What Do I Need to Apply “Certified” means the document carries the court’s or issuing agency’s official seal. This is where most applicants get sent home.
Two Proofs of Kentucky Residency
Bring two separate documents showing your name and physical Kentucky address, dated within the last year where applicable. Accepted items include a utility bill, telephone bill, bank statement, lease or rental agreement, mortgage statement, property tax bill, Kentucky vehicle registration, or U.S. Postal Service postmarked mail.3Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Valid Proof Documents for Kentucky Driver’s Licenses, Permits, and Identification Cards Your current Kentucky driver’s license or ID counts as one of the two.

What Happens at the Office
After check-in, staff collect and review your identity, Social Security, name change, and residency documents and verify each one.
If you’re applying for or renewing a driver’s license rather than an ID card, you’ll go through a vision screening. Kentucky requires visual acuity of 20/40 or better and a minimum horizontal field of 30 degrees in each direction.5Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Kentucky Driver’s License Vision Screening Fact Sheet The screening has been mandatory since January 1, 2025. A new digital photo is taken for the card.
Once the application is approved and the fee is paid, you’ll receive a temporary paper document to use in the meantime.
